To compile your list:

• Ask professors & TAs for names of the top scholars in your field

• Ask faculty members to introduce you to a potential adviser

• Browse different department websites

• Attend conferences, notice faculty who capture your attention

• Read scholarly journals to find faculty doing cutting edge work in your field

• Make intentional contact; let them know your interest in a specific program

• Take a class, an independent study course or work in their labs

• Follow them in conferences, reach out in advance, let them know you admire their work and ask questions

• Do not ask professors general admission questions; ask about their latest publications, conference presentations, etc.

• Once relationship is established, ask if they are taking any students for the upcoming application cycle

• Ask faculty members to refer you to their grad students

• Rule of thumb: select two to three potential advisers per school in case one is not accepting students in a given application cycle, moves campus, etc.

• Avoid applying to schools without reaching out to advisers and allies first

• It will be difficult to adjust to your program & establish a professional relationships with faculty

• If using a MA program as a springboard to a Ph.D. program, it is vital to maintain an excellent relationship with your adviser
