Navigating Google Groups; Gmail vs nonGmail
1: You are approved as a UDC member
2: The email you put on your membership application is added to the groups listing
3: You will receive a welcome email with a Google Groups invitation
4: You can also access Google groups using https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/united-doberman-club and create
profile with any email address you want but using email that UDC has on file. You will also have the option to create a Gmail
account
5: Log into to UDC group
6. If you are an EXISTING member who never opted to be included in the Groups, please send an email to the Membership
Secretary, [email protected]
I will give you a visual of a non Gmail account and a Gmail account so you can see how the process flows and also how display
names and signatures are incorporated in addition to how you can utilize your email to post instead of using the actual Groups
web application platform.
If you have a non Gmail email address this will take you through the steps to gain access to the Google groups. When you
receive the email (this is the email that you put on your membership application) you will click on "Accept this Invitation"
<<<<<<<<
You can click on the hyperlink "United Doberman Club Official Members" and it will take you directly to the Google Groups
home page
From here you will click on "Sign in to view this group"
<<<<<<<<
You will select "Use another account" then "More Option" and "Create an Account"
You now have the option to either create a Gmail account or continue to utilize your current non Gmail address, in this case, I
will be utilizing a Yahoo email. Click on the hyper link "I prefer to use my current email address"
<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Enter your information accordingly
Verify your account
Agree to use your email for Google Groups
This is your welcome screen, the upper right hand corner gives you options to update your pictures and account settings
You officially now have access to the Google groups board with a NON Gmail account
The next time you log in it will recognize that you have logged in prior and created a profile and will appear as below.
Use this link https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/united-doberman-club
You will immediately be brought to your Groups home page
Click on "My Groups" and it brings you here, then click on the hyperlink for UDC
Which brings you to the Forum view; to the right click on the person/drop down which will give you access to your display
>>>>>>>>
You can choose how you wish your name to display, it will default to your email handle. This is how your name will be
displayed in the Groups and on any replies etc within the groups. You can also update your email notification frequency from
this screen.
I personally choose “every new message” and I have created a folder in my Gmail where the notifications go and I can read
through each email/thread. I don’t always have the ability to access the Google Groups message board and replying through
email is a convenient way to stay connected (will be shown later)
Change and hit save.
You can also access the display feature this way: the "Edit" next to my name
To the right of my information it gives you the option to drop down and choose your email frequency
I created a new topic from the Groups "Test Google groups" which displays here in the forum and since I have opted to
receive email notifications I will also receive one in my Yahoo email
It appears just as a normal email would which allows me to reply via email instead of using the Google board
I hit "reply" within that thread, note the return email address, and type in my response (signatures will be addressed later)
You will now receive another email with the reply but it will also post the Google groups board
View from the board/email. Regardless of email (Gmail or not) this works the same with email replies
Also note that you can start topic on the board FROM you email.
Just open a new email and use the "[email protected]" as the "To" put your topic in the subject line
and fill in your email below as normal. When you hit send it will automatically post the new topic to the Google board and
send out an email notification to those who opt in
Signing in using Gmail email given on UDC application
When you receive your email notification asking you to accept the invitation for the Google board (as shown in the very
beginning) you will be prompted to enter your Gmail address.
You will immediately be brought to your Groups home page and in the upper right hand corner you will have a grid
At the bottom click on "More" then "Even More"
Scroll all of the way to the bottom of the page and you will see "All Products" and Google Groups will be listed there
<<<<<<<<<
By clicking on "Groups" it will bring you to the Groups home page then go to the grid in the upper right hand corner and it will
give you the option to add Groups to your shortcuts. Now you have easy access every time you log into your Gmail account
Click on your Groups shortcut
It will bring you the Groups home page where you can access the UDC groups under My Groups. The flow is the same as the
Google Groups screenshots provided at the top within the Yahoo directions
Gmail email view:
I personally create a filter with email notifications I receive via UDC Google Boards so it is contained in its own folder which
I can easily access and keeps it organized. The notifications received appear as regular emails
The thread appears as a typical email which allows you to “reply” to that thread and after you type your response and hit “send” it utilizes the UDC email
address to connect and post it to the Google Groups message board. For anyone who has email notifications setup they will also receive the response via
email and each person’s response will be kept within the thread regardless of method used i.e. message board or email.
****This is the exact same process as outlined above with Yahoo email, just from a Gmail perspective*****
The "From" section at the top shows you that it came from the UDC Google board "on behalf of Ashlee" (as I have chosen
Ashlee as my display name) and follows it with my email address.
The links in the bottom of the email give you different options
You can create a new post with a new subject/topic via email by using [email protected] as the email address,
inputting your topic in the email Subject area and typing your post in the body of the email. When you’re ready, just hit “send” and it will post
to the board and send out a notification to those who opt in
It immediately sent the notification via email (as I have this option setup) and also posted to the board (below) allowing users to view and access.
***Again, identical process as the Yahoo email directions earlier****
<<<<<<<<<<
Other Google Groups info
You can access a filter option from this screen if you are looking for specific messages or topics and you can even apply a date range
From this screen you can also access the “Members” section of the forum
This option also allows you access to edit your display features as well and gives you a complete listing of UDC members
that are utilizing the Google boards
>>>>>>
If you would like to see statistics about the group i.e. most active posters, posting trends per month etc the information is located under the
“About” link
>>>>>>>>
You can access a mobile friendly web application from the “My Groups” home page at the bottom should you choose to
open a browser on your phone. Easiest way is to Google "Google Groups"
The view from your phone should look similar to this, this view is via Iphone

Signatures
Regardless of your email provider, if you have a signature setup and you use the email function to post/reply it will utilize the
signature you have setup. I have Gmail and I set my signature up to cater to the UDC boards so if I reply to a non UDC email I
just remove the signature if I don’t want it.
Gmail signature:
Yahoo mail signature:
And here you can see the email signature I have setup also appears in the post on the message board making it easy for
members to identify who created the topic or replied to a comment in the thread
