Is working with VDTs hazardous? What exactly is a video display ter

minal (VDT)? If you work on a computer then you know it is the screen you look at. But what is it made of and what are the hazards to you if any? A VDT is a vacuwn tube encased in either a metal or plastic case. Within this vacuwn tube lies the "cathode" - a negatively-charged electrode at the back of the screen. It sweeps across it, then down, then across again until the entire screen has been covered. This pattern is constantly repeated. The front of the cathode ray tube is a screen coated with "phosphorus" spots that glow when hit by the electron beam. Over the past few years many questions have come up from employees who spend much of their work day in front of a VDT. Some common concerns are:

Am I being exposed to radiation? Like other common devices (irons, toasters, televisions, etc.) VDTs produce some kinds of radiation. This radiation, when dectected, has been found to be well below federal safety guidelines. None of the many studies made of VDT radiation have shown it to cause health problems in humans.

What can I do to relieve the strain in my neck, back and shoulders? Good posture is the key. Be aware of what type of chair your sitting in and how you are sitting in it. The upper body is most com-

fortable when you sit feet flat on the floor, keep your knees level with your hips, keeping your head up and your back straight.

Sore hands and wrists can result from using repetitive motions. These parts of the body are most comfortable when the forearm is nearly at a right angle to the upper arm. Keep the wrist straight - in line with hand and forearm.

These are a few tips to keep in mind while you are using your computer. For more information on VDT's contact the safety office (ext.2475).
