MESSAGE

02 I MARCH/APRIL 2011

Dear Members,In this edition, we are featuring some pictures fromthe 2010 New Year Eve Party themed, “Pirates of theAndaman Sea” for members viewing. I would like totake this opportunity to fervently thank all membersfor their support and wonderful comments about theevent. I believe such enthusiastic comments will spurour staff to strive harder to provide excellent serviceto all our valued members. At the same time, I wouldalso like to express my heartfelt “Thank You” to allstaff for their enormous contributions and efforts inaccomplishing the challenging year-end task.

As we moved along into January and February, theChinese New Year’s longevity and prosperity menusold like hot cakes with the Captain’s Restaurant runningfull-house for a couple of days starting from the secondday of the Chinese New Year. On Valentine’s Day, wehad a special romantic candlelight dinner. Memberswere treated to a scrumptious five course Continentalset menu accompanied with a complimentary glass ofwine and a stalk of rose for the ladies. Again, we werecommended on the food and services rendered.

For the month of March and April we have lined upa couple of exciting promotions and events. Startingwith a Wine Dinner on 22 April, wine connoisseurswill be indulged with a selection from the Old andNew Wine World winery, complemented with a fivecourse Continental dinner menu which will be hostedat the Captain’s Restaurant. I would like to remind

members to book early as only limited seats areavailable. This will be followed by an exciting and funEaster Brunch cum Treasure Hunt for the children on24 April, which will take up two locations - the Captain’sRestaurant and the MPH. Meanwhile at the Captain’sDeck, we will be offering golden brown waffle servedwith your favourite single scoop ice cream. As for theFun Pub, you would be happy to know that we areextending the Happy Hours to midnight every Sunday.

Apart from all the new promotions, our EnglishAfternoon Tea, International Beer promotion, HealthyDrinks promotion, Wine of the Month - Australia’sSaltram Makers Table, Executive Set Lunch, HappyHours at Fun Pub etc. will all be available in Marchand April.

With all the above enticing promotions lined up in thecoming months, it will certainly make “lazying aboutthe club” all the more easy!

Happy Clubbing!

Thank you

Abd Rahman bin Ahmad

From the General Manager

Dear Members,MembersAt the time of writing, there are 617 members on theAbsent Members’ List, of which 119 are not payingany subscription as the period of their absence outsideMalaysia has still not exceeded a year, and the remaining80%, or 498 members are paying half the normalmonthly subscription as their period of absence hasexceeded one year. As subscriptions are meant to bethe member's contribution to the maintenance andoperation of the Club, the majority of the memberswho attended the EGM on 9 May 2010 felt that absentmembers should still pay their subscription. Toimplement this change would require an amendmentto Rule 14 of the Club Rules on Absent Members, andthis is being looked into by the Committee.

Venue Rental & Other ChargesEach time a dinner function is held in the Multi-PurposeHall (MPH), it costs the Club as much as RM3,000.00in terms of utility, service and equipment charges.Hence, a rental of RM1,000.00 is levied for the use ofthe MPH for private dinner functions where guests areinvited to attend. In addition, the organizer (who mustbe a member), would have to pay other charges suchas for equipment and technical support, and also agreeto the minimum food cost supplied by the Club caterer, currently fixed at RM380.00 per table for a Chinesecourse dinner, or RM40.00 per pax for a buffet dinner.

Recreational Facilities & GuestsIt is implicit from Rule 3(b) of the Club Rules thatrecreational facilities of the Club are meant for the use

of members only. This is also evident from the Bye-laws prohibiting guests from using these facilities, i.e.the pool, sauna, gym, library, and the bar and karaokefacilities of the Pacific Lounge (except Mondays,Wednesdays and Saturdays when guests are permittedinto the Pacific Lounge).

With regards to racket-game facilities such as tenniscourts, squash courts in the Tower Block and badmintoncourts in the MPH, members are allowed to introduceguests to use these facilities with them, subject topayment of RM5.00 per hour per guest, on top of thecourt usage fee. A member may however introduceno more than two guests at a time and the same guestmay not be introduced more than three times in onemonth as stipulated in Rule 16 of the Club Rules.

Subject to the provisions of Rule 16, members mayentertain guests at facilities with a bar, such as theCaptain’s Restaurant, the Snake Temple, the SeafrontCafe, the Clubhouse, Fun Pub, and the Pacific Lounge(on the abovementioned three days of the week).

We hope that all members will continue to benefitfrom the services and facilities at our beloved Club!

CLUB HAPPENINGS

About 76 members attended the Dialogue that was held on 29January 2011 at the Clubhouse. This Dialogue was meant formembers and the Committee to engage in an informal exchangeof views on issues of concern to either or both parties.

True to the reputation of our passionate PSC members, the Dialoguewas not without the rhetoric, theatrics, and applause associatedmore with a debate or meeting, but it certainly liven up whatwould otherwise have been a mundane session.

Issues that were raised and discussed at the Dialogue includedthe following:

• Use of Eucalyptus oil in the steam and sauna rooms

• Coupon system for free drinks for members after each GeneralMeeting

• Guests attending Section or Group functions

• Boat ramp being not user-friendly

• Library problems

• More use of e-mail service by the Club

The President had to end the Dialogue after two hours (as he hadanother business to attend to in the Club), and assured the membersthat the Committee would take into account their views at theirnext meeting.

ANGLING SECTION

10 I MARCH/APRIL 2011

ANGLING

CARNIVAL

The event kicked off at 3.00pm with the fishing competition, followed by the “koreksiput” competition which lasted for half an hour and ended with the sand carvingcompetition which took another hour.

Many came prepared with different baits to entice the fish. The air was filled withexcitement & anticipation as the competitors waited for the fish to take their bait. Itproved to be a gratifying hour and a half as more than half of the total participantswere awarded prizes for bringing in a fish. In addition, prizes were also awarded tothe top 3 participants with the heaviest catch, with Ann Ch’ng clinching the title“Champion of the Day” when she reeled in a Senangin which tipped the scale at 550g.

The next event, the simple “korek siput”, was made extra challenging as the participantshad to “korek” for the “siput” without any apparatus. However, the contestants wereundaunted with the conditions imposed and so with or without tools, they dug anddug and dug for the humble little shellfish. Mrs Fong Seow Hoo emerged the championwhen she collected 604g of “siput”, followed closely in 2nd position by, no other thanher better half, Mr Lee Hong Kiong. Sheer coincidence! By the way, the “siput” isyummy even when just simply fried.

The contestants for the Sand Carving Competition were free to choose their own teammembers and at the word “go”, the contestants deftly fashioned their own creation. It was a lesson in team-building as we observed the 7 teams working in cohesion toachieve their target. The first prize was awarded to Team 3A comprising of HelenChew, Teoh Gaik Hong, Tan Joon Jong, Joy Yeoh and Henry Khoo.

It had been a wonderful afternoon which ended too soon, and the day ended with asimple but delectable course dinner at the Captain’s Restaurant. We were honored withthe presence of the Club Captain, Lawrence Low and the Club Treasurer, Chan KeanHin together with their lovely spouses.

Blissful contentment was the theme of the day as one could see beaming faces on allpresent, be they winners or otherwise. All in all, it was refreshing to see familiesenjoying themselves in the sand and sun. Hence if you are game for a half day ofrelaxing fun and frolic, check out the 2011/2012 angling calendar and make a datewith us. But why wait till our next big event? Join us NOW to start enjoying qualityand memorable time with your family!

5 December 2010 was a beautiful day with the sun blazing and intermittent cloudsslightly obscuring the otherwise clear skies. The crowd comprising of 35 ladies, 31men and 12 children assembled at the Sailing Area beachfront for the Angling Carnival. The Angling Section chairman, Beh Ping Sin, welcomed the participants and thenbriefed them on the simple rules and regulations of the day’s programme.

ANGLING SECTION

I MARCH/APRIL 2011 11

The 61 members comprising of 27 men, 30 ladies and 4 children hurriedlyhelped themselves to the “makan kecil” buffet style which was served at7.00pm and then rushed away for a coveted fishing spot.

One would notice that most anglers crowded themselves at the extendedbeachfront; whilst the few who preferred space took position towards thesailing shed area and some fished from the walkway above the sailing area. All anglers readied themselves, fishing rod in hand and ever hopeful oflanding a good sized fish, waited patiently for the Marshal’s sounding of thehorn.

The night turned out to be a good time for fishing as the catch was encouragingand the results of the competition were as follows:

MEN I Michael QuahLADIES I Teh Peck HoonCHILDREN I Hans Lee

ONSHORE DAYFISHING COMPETITION9 JANUARY 20119 January proved to be a good fishing day, where location and catch wasconcerned as it was the time of year where the Snake Temple beachfrontis naturally sheltered from the sun. Forty four members comprising of 19men, 21 ladies and 4 children took part in the day fishing, with only oneperson failing to turn up. The champions of the day were:

JOINT ANGLING/TAI-CHIPRE-CNY PARTY22 JANUARY 2011As has been practiced in previous years, the Chinese New Year Party wasa joint affair with the Tai-Chi Group. To celebrate the auspicious occasion,we had the honor of the company of the President Dato’ Mahinder Singhand Club Captain Lawrence Low together with their charming spouses.

It was a night of games, word puzzles and karaoke singing. Having to workwith a tight budget and not wanting to tax the Tai-Chi and Angling coffers, the Chairperson of the event, Janet Lee took upon herself to craft theinnovative prizes from red packets. Syabas and a Big Thank You, Janet!

Those present had the chance to hear once again the rendition of thekaraoke champion singers of both the Tai-Chi Group (1st runner up) andthe Angling Section (2nd runner up). They were followed by the manyother songbirds, including the President and Datin Charlotte, who gamelyentertained us with their songs.

Despite the low cost menu, we had a scrumptious buffet dinner, and wemanaged to celebrate the lunar year with beer, wine; and of course, “kum”- a ‘must-have’ item for the Chinese New Year - were distributed to themembers.

It was a simple but wonderful evening with good fellowship and the partyended late at night.

ONSHORENIGHT

FISHINGCOMPETITION

18 DECEMBER 2010Encouraged by the good catch during the

inter-team competition, the Committee decidedto hold the above competition at the sailingarea beachfront instead of the usual fishing

spot at the Snake Temple beachfront.

The boat handling course - a club event opened to all PSCmembers - was held on 16 January 2011 from 10.00am to 5.00pm.The course was designed to familiarize members on the properuse of the Angling Section’s boats and was jointly conducted byour club member Mr Gregory Yap and Mr Geron Ngo of OnomichiMarine Enterprise.

The response was overwhelming and out of the 102 memberswho registered, only 9 failed to turn up.

The programme was as follows:

He alsoshared with us tips on operating the 4 stroke outboard motor. He highlighted to the participants that 2T oil should NEVER beused as it would damage the 4 stroke engine. He further explainedthat the 4 stroke engine runs on pure gasoline and has no needfor lube oil, thus making it smokeless, smooth running & generallyconsumes less fuel as compared to the 2 stroke outboard engine.

At the end of the course, the general consensus from theparticipants was positive and is summarized below:

Feedback from Participants“Gregory was informative & good practical advice was given byan obviously experienced sailor!”

“I really found what Geron said very informative as it made a lotof sense.”

The Swimming Section organised a climb up Penang Hill on 3 December 2010.20 age-group swimmers and 6 adults, including swimming coaches SoonChiang and Choo Heng participated. The hikers assembled at the BotanicalGarden at 2.00pm, and commenced the climb from the main entrance at2.30pm.

The weather was fine, and our swimmers, many from Groups 4 & 5, possessedboth the endurance and will to complete the ascent, although the question“Have we arrived alrea~deeee?!" would occasionally surface.

Finally after slightly over two hours, the summit was reached. The hikers weregiven time to rest, and had ice-kacang at the kiosk.

The descent was less challenging, as it was with the aid of 4 WD vehicles.By 7.00pm, all had reached the Club to get themselves ready for the Get-together.

The Get-together was held at the recreation area adjacent to the toddlers pool.About 80 swimmers, parents and adult members attended. Ann Ooi, theSwimming Section Chairman, Ng Ai Lim Vice-Chairman, and many committeemembers were also present and everyone had an enjoyable time. We wouldlike to thank all the parents and members for their personal contribution formaking this event so memorable!

The Pacific Lounge has proven itself once again to be the popularrendezvous point for many members in search for friendship and fellowshipamongst Sections and Groups members.

The Inaugural PSC InterSection/Group Karaoke Competition 2011 washeld on the 14 January 2011 with a total of 27 crooners - three from eachSection/Group - battling with their vocal cords for the honour of theirrespective Section/Groups. The evening started with a sumptuous buffetspread at the pool side at the Snake Temple, after which everyoneadjourned to the Lounge for the competition proper. The evening wasgraced by our evergreen Vice President Mr Allan Cheah with his lovelywife, as well as members of the Main Committee and their lovely spouses.

This was a “Muhhibah” competition, with songs of all languages such asEnglish, Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese, and Malay songs all being sung.

The running joke for the evening, in which everyone participated good-humouredly, was that cheeky comments were heard as contestants setfoot on stage…

“Wah Liao, she is so fair-skinned, how can she be a Swimming Sectionmember??”“He’s an angling member?? I’ve never seen him throwing a line before!!”“A dart member is he?? Does he even know where to throw a dart??”

While we joked that these ‘Darters’ can’t find their target, they werecertainly ON target that night, as they not only produced the evening’sChampion team as represented by Ivan Lee, Yeo and Jeff Tan, but alsoa ‘clean sweep’, with Jeff Tan also winning the Best Overall Singer trophyfor the night.

The evening was a smashing success, so much so that we’re ready tomerge with the Darts Group for having so many great singers!

While the above Club event was greatly received, we regret to report thatthe monthly Group Birthday Bash held every 2nd Friday of the monthhas not been that encouraging. We had good food, great crowd but toofew actual birthday members turn up! So we’re appeal to all sectionmembers to keep a date with us, especially the birthday boy/gal.

In the meantime, our Karaoke die-hards are in “Launching Mode’ for theup-coming Inter-Club Meet with the Penang Sport Club scheduled on 12March 2011. We not only need your support to cheer our team to victory, but we’d like as many of our Club members to sign up for selection too!Uncle Sam of the Penang Swimming Club needs you, “Our Gallant SingingSoldiers” to fly our flag high!!!

Lastly a simple reminder… Our next section event, the Annual KaraokeDinner and Dance will be held on the 30 April 2011. Please keep a datewith us.

HAPPY SINGING.

About 90 of our regular and not-so regular members turned upfor the Members’ Night buffet dinner hosted by the DanceSportSection on 15 January at the Multi-Purpose Hall.

It was held as a thank-you gesture for the members, made evenmore meaningful since it was held during the festive season. Inhis speech, the DanceSport Chairman Richard Chung thankedthe members for their support, particularly, for the recent BellyDance Xtravaganza.

The co-emcees for the evening, EJ Lee and TC Choong, hadplenty of tricks up their sleeves with all-time favourite partygames like paper dance, limbo rock and orange dance whichhad the audience in hysterics at the antics of the participants. You can never accuse the DanceSport Section members of beingboring ~ just take a look at our photos!

The occasion was creditably handled by the emcee, Tan EngHean while Dr Lim Chee Khiong helped set the mood with sing-along of CNY songs. The festive spirit was further heightened bythe distribution of mandarins (kam in Cantonese meaning gold)to everyone present as “golden blessings” for a prosperous andhealthy year ahead.

The red décor matched by the predominantly red attire of thosepresent further enhanced the festive and joyous atmosphere ofthe evening. The sufficient amount of food was a good omenand augured well for everyone in the coming year of the rabbit.
