"free" doesn't mean "impact-free" but merely "not for sale" and that the caretaker mindset is the opposite of the consumer mindset.

u "Folks, foraging and consumerism are two different mindsets. If you apply your consumer mindset to foraging you will wipe out the diverse wild food and medicine garden that is your backyard. Being a caretaker as a forager is essential for personal health as well as the health of the landscape. If there is a means to increase biodiversity and mutually beneficial relationships, it is found in ethical and creative foraging. Movements like permaculture and wild food gardens are good starts at reclaiming ancestral understanding of this basic approach. Wild food isn't free. It demands a level of reciprocity. Selfish, short sighted consumer attitudes have given the practice a bad name and have harmed many plant populations. Forage as if the health of your great grandchildren depended upon it. That is all."
