What are Elements of Nature?

Page 4: Nature inspired mugsmswrightsartclasses.weebly.com/uploads/9/3/8/0/9380026/copy_of_nat… · 1. Look at this Presentation at your own pace. Be sure to watch each of the video links

Do Now1. Describe a vivid experience you have had in relation to nature. Did you share this moment with

someone? Were you alone? Was it funny/ meaningful/ serene/ exciting...etc? If you can’t think of a

vivid experience in nature you have already had then describe a natural place/landscape you’d like

to visit someday.

1. If you could only describe this memory/experience/location by one visual element what would it be?

What made you choose this particular element? An element is defined as a part or aspect of

something that is essential to the whole. For example if you experienced standing in a field on a

cool, fall day with fallen leaves blowing all around you, your chosen element might be a “brown leaf.”

What is Underglaze Painting?: Underglazes are colored slips formulated to have low drying shrinkage, allowing application to leather, bone-dry

or bisque fired surfaces before glazing. Underglazes come in a wide palette of color options and fire true to color.

Underglazes have a matte finish unless they are covered in a clear gloss glaze, which will create a shiny and

brighter color finish.

Underglaze Painting: Underglaze paints must have 3 coats of each color in order for the color to be opaque. If you want a more washed

out or transparent look you can water down your underglazes or apply less coats.

Underglaze Painting: Underglazes can be layered and blended like paint.

What is SGRAFFITO?: (watch the video, click on the red text)A form of decoration made by scratching through a clay surface that is painted with underglaze to reveal a

lower level of contrasting color. In ceramics this is done by applying underglaze paints to a leather hard surface and

then scratching/carving the underglaze away to reveal a design or pattern that is a different color for the top underglaze

layer.

Sponge or paint underglaze onto the surface

of leather hard clay.

Create a proportional drawing of you

nature element using pencil/drawing

paper

SGRAFFITO:

of your clay.

SGRAFFITO:

Remove the paper to see the traced image

and use a small carving (sgraffito) tool to

carve away the top layer of underglaze to

reveal the design.

Then decide if you plan to leave it

like this (see image left) or if you

plan to further remove more

underglaze (see image above).

What is Mishima?: (watch the video, click on the red text)Mishima is a technique of inlaying underglaze into a contrasting clay body. This is done by carving (incising) a

thin design/image into leather hard clay. Then underglaze paint is painted over the entire design and then wiped

away with a damp sponge. The underglaze remains as an “inlay” in the carved design. This technique allows for

extremely fine, intricate designs with hard, sharp edges that can be difficult to create other ways.

● Although we know this technique by the name "mishima", it is quite misleading. Mishima is actually a

city in Japan.

● Although many Japanese pottery techniques are called after their city of origin or the family name of

the first artists to use the technique, this is not the case with mishima.

● Mishima was first produced in Korea during the Koryo Period (935-1392 AD).

● The term we now use took hold as this type of pottery, introduced from Korea, was compared to the

script used on calendars created at the shrine at Mishima, Japan.

Mishima: Explore with a variety of tools to carve or stamp a design into leather hard clay.

Mishima: Apply 3 coats of underglaze over your carved or stamped design. Allow to dry between coats.

Mishima: This can be a little tricky. First the clay should be very stiff (leather hard) but not bone dry and second each wipe

should be done with a clean sponge with all the excess water squeezed out. Wiping multiple times with a dirty

sponge will not remove the underglaze from the surface. If your design starts to smear the clay is too wet.

Mishima: Once your surface is wiped clean, the underglaze will remain in the carved or stamped areas. At this point you can

add additional underglaze paint to the surface of your design, in and around the mishima design.

CUPS & TUMBLERS BY DIANA FAYT

(Click on the link above in red)

Diana Fayt is a contemporary artist from California. She uses the techniques of underglaze painting, sgraffito and

mishima to make unique pottery inspired by elements from the nature world. Layers and layers of underglaze colors

are laid down, readying it for her process. Using an array of different tools, Diana carefully incises lines of different

depths and widths, into the surface of each piece, to create movement and a line quality all her own.

Exit Ticket:1. Answer TRUE or FALSE: Underglazes allow for application to leather hard, bone-dry, or bisque

fired surfaces before glazing and fire true to color.

1. Explain the difference between the sgraffito technique and the mishima technique?

1. Now that you have seen the artist examples of nature inspired pottery, what nature element would

you want to incorporate onto a clay mug and why? Did this idea change from what you wrote about

in the Do Now? Why or why not?

1. Now that you have seen the technique demonstrations of underglaze painting, sgraffito, and

mishima, which technique do you think you would want to use on your clay mug? Or would you plan

to use a combination? Why did you choose this technique (these techniques)?

1. Do a drawing of the mug you wish you could make if your could get back to the art room.Take a

photo of it and include it in your word document.
