What to doYou are going to create an art installationthatreflectsyourlocal

landscape. You can use any natural materials you can find, and you’ll be given string or ropetouseifyouwant.

Discussyourlocalareaanditslandscape.Writedownanywordsthatyouthinkdescribe it.

Landartistsuseahugevarietyofmaterialsandlocationstocreateinstallationsthatreflectandenhancethelandscape.Herearesomeexamples.

Richard Long:Anaward-winningartistwhocreatespiecesoutofstoneandmudonahugescale.Heisespeciallyfondofspiralsusing contrasting colours and vast landscapes.

Cornelia Konrads:Worksinforestscreatingsuspended installations between trees and walls.Sheusesfeathers,logsandleavestomakethespacescometolife.

Unknown:Therearemanypiecesofland artthatdatebackthousandsofyears. TheUffingtonWhiteHorse,forexample,is110metreslongandcanbeseenformiles.

Getintogroupsofthreeorfour.Lookatthelistofwordsandspendfiveminutes

discussingwhatkindofinstallationyouwouldliketomake.Whatmaterialswillworkwell?

Gooutsideandlookforaspacetobuildyourartwork.Youdon’thaveto

builditdirectlyontheground;youcouldusespacesbetweentrees,treerootsorbushes.Onceyou’vechosenagoodspot,sketchoutyourideas.Whenyouagreeonone,startcollecting natural materials to make your artwork. Remember, you can only use natural materials(exceptforthestring/tapetoholdthemtogether).Youhavetenminutes!

Whenyourtimeisup,presentyourinstallationtotheothergroups.Explain

whatinspiredyouandwhatitrepresents.

Wheneachteamhaspresented,ifit’ssafetodosoleaveyourlandartfor

otherstoenjoy.However,ifitcouldbeahazardtoothers,anyanimalsorthearea,make sure you dismantle your artwork and returntheitemstotheplacesyoufoundthem,removinganytapeorstring.
