WILD, WILD CARIBBEANMother Nature’s Playground

With year-round sunshine and ecosystems that range from cloud forest to cactus scrubland, the Caribbean is home to a dazzling array of wildlife. Beneath the surface of the sea, coral reefs teem with schools of fish and migratory turtles, while whales and dolphins frolic nearby. On shore, over 470 species of birds can be found, including: bright Caribbean flamingos, whistling ducks, scarlet ibis, cachalacas, thick knees, plovers, lapwings, red-bellied macaws, lilac-tailed parrotlets, owls and oil birds, copper-rumped hummingbirds,

collared trogons, and more.

Stop at the historic whaling island of Bequia, explore the rainforest of Dominica, sample the spices of Grenada, and soak up the pure Caribbean sunshine.

Nassau, Bahamas (Embarkation)DAY 1

Cruising the Caribbean SeaDAY 2

The Caribbean Sea floor is made up of five basins, separated by underwater ridges and mountain ranges. Water from the Atlantic Ocean enters the Caribbean through the Anegada Passage (between the Lesser Antilles and Virgin Islands) and the Windward Passage (between Cuba and Haiti). After an exhilarating day of cruising, we’ll gather at sunset for a cocktail reception, followed by a sumptuous welcome dinner.

STOREFRONT IN NASSAU

Arrive at Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport and make your way to the port where you’ll board the MS Saint Laurent. This evening, share cocktails on deck as we prepare to set sail on our tropical cruise adventure.

Today we will arrive in the Turks & Caicos and go ashore on Grand Turk. Grand Turk was founded by Bermudan salt rakers three centuries ago and its pastel-colored Bermudan-British colonial architecture makes the island a treasure to visit. The island is six miles long and just over a mile wide with a population of only 6,000. It is blessed with miles of beautiful beaches and is close to several uninhabited cays. While there are many landside attractions to explore such as the Old Prison, Lighthouse Park, and the re-created salt salina, the real beauty of the island lies underwater. Grand Turk is known for the healthy coral reefs that surround the island, stretching almost from the coastline to the 7,000-foot vertical wall just offshore.

Cruising the Caribbean SeaDAY 4

The Caribbean Sea is home to as many as 450 species of fish, including the bull shark, tiger shark, silky shark, Caribbean reef shark, flying fish, giant oceanic manta ray, angel fish, spotfin butterflyfish, parrotfish, Atlantic goliath grouper, tarpon, and moray eels.

St. John, US Virgin IslandsDAY 5

Today we will visit the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John. At the heart of St. John is Virgin Islands National Park, which takes up a full two-thirds of the island’s 20 square miles. In colonial times, much of the island was clear-cut to make room for sugar cane. Today, the park’s conservators help maintain the interior in a pristine and undisturbed state. The park also contains 5,650 acres of submerged land, with an abundance of coral gardens. After today’s expedition, you may choose to visit Trunk Bay, which boasts beautiful underwater coral gardens and one of the world’s most stunning beaches.

In classic, laid back, Caribbean style, the islands of St. Kitts & Nevis sit side by side, separated by “the narrows,” a channel just two miles wide. Geographically they are similar with their volcanic peaks, luscious rainforest descending to flat lands, white sand beaches, and clear blue seas. But each has its own character. Nevis offers gracious, old, sugar plantation houses such as the Hermitage Plantation, Montpellier Golden Rock, and Old Manor. It is the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, a founding father of the United States. It is also the place Lord Admiral (Horatio) Nelson was stationed as a young sea captain. On our excursion today, we’ll visit a restored plantation house and the Fig Tree Church where Lord Nelson and local widow Fanny Nesbit were married. Afterwards, enjoy free time to visit the beach or take a hike in the rainforest to look for green-back monkeys.

Charlestown, NevisDAY 6

ST. JOHN, TRUNK BAY, US VIRGIN ISLANDS

Page 8: Natural Splendors of the Esoteric Caribbean

Roseau, DominicaDAY 7

Set between Guadeloupe and Martinique, the island of Dominica has a vibrant rainforest that is home to rare birds, including Sisserou and Jacquot parrots. Streams tumble down mountain slopes and thread fertile valleys on their short route to the sea. Dominica is also home to the last Carib Indians. When Columbus made landfall on his second voyage of discovery, these fierce warriors managed to keep the explorer at bay. Today, this former British possession, independent since 1978, lures visitors from around the world with its unspoiled beauty. As the islanders fondly say, “Après bondie, c’est la terre,” (After god, is the earth).

After breakfast, you’ll disembark the MS Saint Laurent and make your way to the airport for your flight home or to The Hyatt Regency Trinidad (or similar) for your extended stay.

St. George’s, GrenadaDAY 9

Grenada is the Caribbean’s “Isle of Spice” – one of the world’s richest sources of nutmeg, mace, clove, cinnamon, and cocoa. Indeed, the fragrant aroma of spice seems to envelop the island’s emerald hillsides, tropical forests, and sun-drenched beaches. You may remember the island from the 1983 U.S. military intervention. Over two decades later, Grenada is again an ideal vacation spot. Carefully calculated building restrictions ensure that no building here is higher than a coconut palm, which makes St. George’s Harbor is a picture-perfect postcard of an idyllic Caribbean harbor. Our shore excursion today takes us to the island’s Fort Frederick, Grand Etange Lake & Laura’s Spice Garden.

Port of Spain, Trinidad (Disembarkation)DAY 10

Bequia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines DAY 8

Extend your journey with a 3-day optional Post-Cruise Extension in the

city of Port of Spain, Trinidad.See page 11 for more information

Bequia is part of St. Vincent & the Grenadines, a 32-island chain known for its history of whaling and boat building. Bequia is reminiscent of how the Caribbean was fifty years ago when safe anchorages buzzed with the activity of local fishermen and yachtsmen. It is a paradise of white sand beaches, boutiques selling local crafts, and the local delicacy: lobster pizza. Today we’ll take a drive to the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary and the Whaling Museum. Afterwards, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the village of Port Elizabeth and relax on Princess Margaret beach.

INDIVIDUAL PURSUITS

On this tour, we’ll visit Titou Gorge, a natural water-ride created by two hot springs. Thanks to its volcanic origins, Dominica is home to many thermal springs, which contain mineral deposits believed to have therapeutic qualities. Upon arrival at Titou Gorge, we’ll swim through the water at the base of a waterfall to a series of natural rooms and ponds created by high cliff walls and interlacing trees. This narrow gorge was formed as molten lava cooled and split apart. Our tour finishes with a visit to Screw’s Sulphur Spas for a soak in hot sulphur pools under cocoa and nutmeg trees.

INDIVIDUAL PURSUITS

This tour begins with a short drive to De La Grenade Industries. Founded in 1969 De La Grenade was a pioneer in the use of the nutmeg fruit. During our tour, we’ll taste the company’s Nutmeg Syrup, which received a Grand Gold Medal from Monde Selection in Brussels. Next, we’ll drive to the Westerhall Estate, one of Grenada’s leading rum distilleries. Founded in the late 1700s, the estate originally grew sugar cane, cocoa, and limes. In 1862, they purchased a sugar cane processing machine and began producing and selling rum. During our tour, we’ll sample some of the distillery’s most exotic rums.

The following morning, you’ll be greeted by your guide for a half-day tour of Trinidad. Traveling via air-conditioned motorcoach, you’ll see the Parliament Building (known as “The Red House”) as well as the Magnificent Seven, a group of ornate mansions built in the early 1900s.
