TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

One of the great treasures of the Eastern tradition is the icon of the Holy Trinity created by the Russian iconogra-pher Andrei Rublev in the 1400s. The Trinity is symbol-ized by the three travelers to the tent of Abraham and Sarah. They are seated at a table blessing a cup of wine, under the oak of Mamre. If you look closely, you will see a sacrificed calf in the chalice, reminding the viewer of the cross. The table, prepared for eating and tilted toward the viewer, is an invitation to the Eucharist. From left to right, each figure is keyed to a person of the Trinity. Like all icons, this image is theology in art. The persons are equal in proportion and dignity, they all carry staffs to symbolize their power, and are shown with golden wings and halos. Today, the best place to see Rublev's work is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, at the heart of the vast Holy Trinity monastery about an hour from Moscow. After decades of persecution, it is now once again a living monastery, a world heritage site, and the spiritual home of Russian Orthodoxy. A Google visit is highly recommended today!

SCHOOL - MAY 27, 2018

Each spring students at Nativity of Mary School take the Iowa Assessments (formerly known as the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills). The Iowa Assessments were designed and developed to measure student achievement and growth in valid and reliable ways. One measurement on the test is the Grade Level Equivalency Score. This is a score that describes a stu-dent’s achievement on a grade level scale. The grade level is a decimal number that describes academic performance in terms of grade level and month. For example, if a student (as a 3rd grade student) receives a score of 4.2 on the third grade Reading Test, this means the student scored as well as a fourth grade student in the second month of the school year if given the same third grade Reading Test. The Complete Composite score is the average of the Reading, Lan-guage, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies test scores. The tests cover the following areas:

Reading: Vocabulary + Reading Comprehension

Language: Spelling + Capitalization + Punctuation + Usage/Expression

Mathematics: Concepts/Estimation + Problem Solving/Data Interpretation + Computation.

Science

Social Studies

The 2017-18 Grade Level Equivalency Complete Composite Scores for Nativity of Mary School are as follows: 3rd Grade- 4.3

4th Grade- 5.4

5th Grade- 6.4

6th Grade- 7.7

7th Grade- 9.2

8th Grade- 13.0 We are proud of our students and their academic performance. However, we also know there is always room for im-provement. After analyzing the test scores, as a school and a diocese, we have set goals to improve performance in the areas of Punctuation and Extended Reasoning. We will be working with an instructional coach, and having professional development to look for ways to improve students learning in all areas. Sincerely, Mary Parrish

MAY 27, 2018 - THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST Praise God! We belong to God's church, which points us to heaven while also embracing our human condition. In to-day's Gospel, Jesus sends his disciples out to baptize all people in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Baptism washes us clean spiritually, but also refreshes us physically. Think of the dirtiest you have ever been--drenched in sweat, covered in dirt, or long unbathed for some reason. Then recall how invigorating it felt to wash in running water. This physical experience of refreshing water reminds us of God's power to renew us, body and soul. In baptism we become part of God's family, as Saint Paul says, through "a Spirit of adoption." As beloved children of God, we cry out "Abba!" and confess from the depths of our hearts that, as Deuteronomy says, the LORD is God, and there is no other. ALL IN THE FAMILY The fact that we are God's actual children changes everything in human history. Studying ancient mythologies is fasci-nating, with such a variety of gods, demigods, monsters, and creatures. But nowhere in those stories does any mere mortal proclaim the intimate goodness of God who parents all of humanity with tender, unchanging love. Deuteronomy seizes on this astonishing attentiveness of God, asking, "Did anything so great ever happen before? Was it ever heard of?" The people of God must answer, "No, never!" God, the one and only true God, has transformed all of human history by choosing us as beloved children. And though we have broken every promise ever made, God has remained faithful to our covenant. God shows us how to keep faith with one another in deep, abiding love. Many of us carry wounds from experiences of unfaithfulness and selfishness. As a people, we are not consistently good at loving each other in the way that God loves us. Each one of us knows the savage pain of indifference or betrayal. Many of us have inflicted pain on others. Even so, God loves us. God's faithfulness encourages us to try again, to love more selflessly. ONGOING SALVATION God rejoices when we refresh ourselves in God's love and rededicate our lives to holiness. Broken as we are, the Lord wants our help to save the world. Jesus saved the world once and for all, of course, through his cross and resurrection. But the work of God's salvation continues as God provides the grace for each human person to work toward healthy re-lationships with God and others. This work goes on until the end of time, and the Lord wants our help. This is what it means to be a disciple of Christ in the new evangelization: We must ask for the grace to live in Jesus, refreshing others with his love. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company

In today’s Gospel and reading from the letter of St. Paul we hear of the gift of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In our devotional life we make the sign of the cross and recite the “Glory Be” as an expression of our faith as a Trinitarian people. But what

does it mean for Christian stewards to accept in a practi-cal way the experience of God in this three-fold gift? Is it a call to share our own life in community, with compas-sion and love, and to work for healing, justice, peace and unity? Is it an invitation to invite others into fellow-ship with us in the unity of the Father, Son and Spirit? Catholic Stewardship May 2018 e-bulletin
