Forecast Information Location: New_Exchequer_Dam Updated: December 15, 2016, 6:00 am NWS Weather Discussion: Issued by: National Weather Service San Joaquin Valley - Hanford CA Issue time: 346 PM PST Wed Dec 14 2016 Dry conditions will prevail tonight as a strong storm moves through Central CA on Thursday and Friday. The storm will usher in heavy rain and higher elevation snow. Temperatures will lower to below normal by the end of the week and into the weekend. && .DISCUSSION... High and mid level moisture will stream in across the region tonight as sub tropical moisture funnels in advance of a cold FRONT dropping in from the north. Models have been consistent with the sub tropical plume that is expected to impact the region starting tomorrow by midday. moisture will spread into the Sierra and continue to increase through the afternoon. the bulk of the precipitation is expected overnight tomorrow night. QPF amounts are expected to be 3 to 5 inches with amounts up to 6 inches along west facing slopes in the Sierra. Rainfall amounts will be 0.50 inches across the SJV to up to nearly 1.5 inches along the east side of the SJV. Flood watches continue across region with debris flows, rock slides and mud slides expected across the Sierra tomorrow night. Urban and small stream flood concerns are expected across the valley with the potential for street flooding in poor drainage areas. Several locations will see significant rainfall across the valley over the 12 hour period from 4 pm tomorrow afternoon through 4 am through Friday morning. We are expecting snow levels to remain above 8000 feet through Friday morning then rapidly dropping to 2500 feet by friday afternoon and evening. We will see snow levels drop to pass levels in the Kern County mountains friday evening. There is some residual upslope precipitation expected across the north facing slopes where snow may accumulate...however confidence is low on how much snow is possible friday night at this time. The FRONT pushes through Friday night with colder air moving into the area Saturday night and into Sunday morning. Widespread freeze is expected Sunday morning in the SJV with several areas dropping below 32. There will be a gradual warming trend starting on Monday and into Tuesday. As far as winds go...we are looking at marginal wind advisory gusts in the Kern county mountains and desert areas on Friday evening. It does not look like it will meet advisory criteria of gusts to 35 mph along the west side of the SJV at this time.
