^i n l Agriculturl and Industrial1 1i o n 1 aissociation of Queensland

For the Year 1915.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,--

IR COUNCIL, in submitting their AnnualReport and Financial Statement for the year1916, would lay special emphasis upon thesuccess which attended your 40th AnnualShow, notwithtanding the appalling and

unparalleled war and weather conditions prevailing during thewhole twelve months preceding the Exhibition.

The Financial Statement presented herewith shows thatRevenue for the year amounted to £11,476/8/, and expenditureto £11,501/17/11, leaving a debit balance on 31st December,1915, of £2992/6/6, as compared with £2966/16/7 at 3lstDecember, 1914, being an increase of £25/9/11 on the 191 1figures, but as permanent improvements effected cost £69G7s. 9d. the profit from the year's Show work is £670 17s. 10d.

Revenue shows a falling off as compared with the pasttwo years, but allowance has to be made for the unprecedentedconditions above-mentioned, which most materially affectedthe revenue from the sale of Privileges, Rent of Spaces, GateReceipts, Membership Receipts, and Live Stock and Agri-cultural entries. Taking these assembled militating circum-stances into consideration, your Council feel that member:;have just reason to congratulate themselves upon the financialresults of the year. Had conditions been normal receiptswould undoubtedly have equalled, if they had not largelyexceeded the annually increasing level experienced during jthe past few years. Our success in the face of the year's

It will be noted that no abatement of our efforts toencourage the exhibition of primary productions occurred onthis year, for no less a sum than £4,340 3s. lid. was paidaway in Prize Money. The -response from producers wasflattering, and resulted in the staging of one of the finestcollections of District and One Farm and Fruit Collections everexhibited in the Southern Hemisphere.

The necessity for encouraging and assisting the grandwork of the various Patriotic Committees was recognised byyour Association, and at the end of the year 1914 a donationof £105 was made to the funds of the Patriotic Committee.During 1915 a further suri of £1685 was handed over to theRed Cross and Patriotic Committees, and in addition, the loanof the Show Grounds which was granted free of charge toPatriotic and other Committees assisted in augmenting thevarious funds by several thousand pounds.

His Excellency Sir Hamilton J. sirable that anything should interfere with the agricultural or otherindustrial developments of the State. (Hear, hear.) He congratulatedthe Association upon the possession of a show ground second to nonethat he had seen in other parts of the world, either from the stand-point of picturesqueness or of utility.. (Applause.) He hoped theefforts of the Association to further improve tlhe grounds would besuccessful, for there were no insurmountable difficulties in tile way,so far as he could see. (Hear, hear.)

Offloial Luncheon.A distinguished gathering, numbering over 400, attended

the Official Luncheon, which was held in the Exhibition Con-cert Hall. In the absence through illness of the President(Sir Arthur Morgan), the Chairman (Mr. John Macdonald)presided. Supporting the Chairman were His Excellency theGovernor and Lady Goold-Adams, Hon. T. J. Ryan (Premier),and Mrs. Ryan, together with the other Ministers of theCrown and their respective wives, Members of the Councilof the National Association and Honorary Officials, accom-panied by their wives or other lady relatives, Members of theLegislative Council and Assembly, and a most representativegathering of Queensland and Southern visitors.

The c:hairman proposed the toasts of " The King" and "His Ex-cellency the Governor." In proposing the health of His Excellency,Mr. Macdonald expressed regret at tie absence through indisposition ofSir Arthur Morgan (President of the Association). Proceeding, lie saidthis was the first occasion on which Ithy hlad been hIonoIured with I-thepresence of His Excellency Sir Hamilton Gold-Adams, but from hisspeech that morning it was a pleasure to learn tlhat they Iiad a Governorwho was fond of agriculture and stock, andl was prepared to back anassociation like theirs. (Applause.) He hanl noticed a few day.s afterHis Excellency camre here that by a misprin't in tlie Press lie was re-ferred to as Sir llamilton " Good "-Adams He was inclined to thinkit would be a good idea to adhere to this, and lie felt sure they wouldfeel in their Ihearls ere long that His Excellency was " Good "-Adams.(Applause.)

His Excellency, in responding, thanked all for the reception ofthe toast. IHe trusted that in years to come their wishes in regard tohimself might he found to have been verified. O)n tle previous day.lie had offered to assist in the Judging of blood stock, and lie trustedthat the exhibitors who had submitted their stock to his Judgmentmight still call him " good." .Applause.) lUnder itie circumstanceslie felt ditlhlence as to whether lie should be addressing them as Gov-ernor or! as one of tlie judges, hut he would have liked to associate.himself entirely with tlie judgets- laughlter -parliciularly as lie hadalready spoken to them that morning as Governor. However, mostof those present were no doubt public speakers, and realised that atthe close of every speech there were some things which the speaker-would have liked to say, but which had been overlooked. There wereone or two things he had omitted that morning. In the first place liehad referred to the good work which exhibitors had done in the im-portation of stock. He wished to add that these people deserved toget the fullest support of the agricultural societies and others in.Queensland. who should purchase stock thius reared in their own locali-ties instead of going outside with their purchases. (Applause.) Hethanked them again for the reception given to the toast, and trusted

Page 8: National · unparalleled war and weather conditions prevailing during the whole twelve months preceding the Exhibition. ... work of the various Patriotic Committees was recognised

that he would be with them again on similar occasions, with the UnionJack still flying over their heads. (Continued applause.)

Mr. A W. Cameron proposed " The Queensland State Parliament."He remarked that the State Parliament was, perhaps, more importantat this time than at any in tihe history of the State. Their presentlegislators took charge in the midst of a very serious drought that hadaffected every class of the community, and they also had to face theidiffculties of the most disastrous and the most sanguinary conflict inthe histor5y of the virld, They wished their present Parliasment, theirMinisters and legislators, the greatcst success in grappling with theditticult problems they had to face, and that they would have courageand strength to guide the ship of State safely through the rocks andshoals that confronted it. Applause.)

The Premitier, in responding, allu del to the dificulties occasionedby drought and war. Speaking for the Parlianmcnt, he could say thateach and every, nrnber felt that the high position they occupied gavethem a correspondiAg responsibility, and the higher the position the.greater responsibility. They felt that in the legislative action theywere taking, and which they were forecasted to take, they would havethe sympathetic assistance of all classes of the community. Theyrealised the dtillii ties that they had to face. Thteir dities were two-fold. They hash t doo all tie y 'ould to assist the National 4iovernmentand time Empire in Isringing th Isis greaIt eon lict to a siic('essiful issue.(Applause.) They could assist the National Government in severalways, and lie was glad to say that .during the present session of Par-liament t hey had ntoit eren slow to take legislative action willi a viewto the annulmsent of certain classes of contracts which wvert' intedtledto lwneflt the enemy. It was a remarkable tlig< till, nevertheless,a fact, that the whole of Ilt metal tttpit of Australia was controlleitby e(lrians, buit action ad been taken by the Nalional Parliament andby their various States to alt''r thtis. Mwnrsb' ubortons 5We regret hlaving to sdvise that a considerable falling oft1

Improvements. The Improvements include the erection of a retaining wall

along the Association's side of the creek, which forms theboundary on the Acclimatisatidn side of the ground, the en-largement of the Dairy Cattle Judging Ring, the erection ofa Milking Test Room, enlargement of the Horticultural Pavi-lion, and the completion of the filling in of the water-holeadjoining the Bowen Bridge Road.

Distriot Exhibits. The encouragement of the exhibition of primary produc-

tions has ever been a prominent feature in connection withthe Brisbane Show, and no expenditure has been spared inthe efforts made to induce competitors to exhibit to the wholeof Australasia the marvellous capabilities of their State. Onthis occasion over £2,000 was spent in Prize Money, Organis-mg Fees and Labour, Materials and Freights, in connectiolnw'th the District and One Farm Exhibits.

Three "A" Grades competed, viz.:-South Coast ofQueensland District Display Association, North Coast of NewSouth Wales Agricultural Societies' Union, and the WesternDistrict of New South Wa les.

"B" Grades were represented by Gympie, Lockyer, King-eroy, Murgon, Wondai and Tingoora, and Crow's Nest.

Messrs. O C. Wilhlams, of Plainby, Crow's Nest, andJ. A. Nystrom, of Booie Kingaroy, were the competitois inthe One Farm Exhibit.

At the Opening Ceremony His Excellency the Governormade the following remarks :-

If there was one man to be envied there that day it was tile suc-cessful exhibitor in the single farm competition. He asked those whohad not seen it to examine it. The exhibitor ami his family must havworked like Trojans for practically the whole of the 365 days in theyear to ensure so great a success. (Applause.) T'lh district exhibitsalso were deserving of special praise. (Hear, hear.)

The displays were undoubtedly the finest ever staged, anda credit alike to organisers and producers. The winners ofthe "A" Grade-the South Coast of Queensland District Dis-play Association--put up an exhibit of such versatility of com-position and excellence of quality that it could well afford tocompete in any part of the world.

The display of the "B" Grades was brimming over withquality and meritorious to a degree, only 6, points dividingthe First and Second prize winners, whilst the third was only43 points off the second.

The following is the result of the competition :--

Covernment Agricultural Farms Display. The excellence of the display made by the Department

of Agriculture has never been surpassed. It would requirepages to detail the almost inconceivable number of classes ot.agricultural produce exhibited. No more educational displayhas been shown in this or any other State, and too muchpraise cannot be given to the departmental officers for thetrouble taken to display produce in the artistic designs sub-mitted, nor for their unvarying courtesy to the enquirihg v'si-tors who daily thronged the Court.

Intelllgenoe and Tourist Bureau. For the first time for a number of years this Department

exhibited inside the Main Pavilion, the Court providing fea-tures of more than ordinary interest. The walls were coveredwith pictures illustrating the various beauty spots throughoutQueensland, and literature relating to railways, land settle-ment and tourist trips wv s provided in abundance.

Fisheries Court. The Fisheries Department, under the supervision of Capt.

Stevens, fairly excelled all previous efforts, and during theweek the spacious and attractive court, stocked with its com-prehensive display of Queensland edible and otherwise com-mercial fish products, was crowded with visitors.

Aboriginal Court.Anything relating to our aboriginals is ever

attractive to the public, and the very fineexhibits which this year filled the Aboriginal Court, amplydemonstrated the fact that the youthful aboriginals are aptscholars, and possessed of mechanical ability above the ave-

rage. The Protector, Mr. J W Bleakley, must be congratu-lated upon the beneficial work which he and his staff are con-ducting on behalf of the Aboriginals.

Dairy Cattle. The interested crowd of spectators round the

ling side during the period of judging was unani-mious in their opinion that no finer lot of Dairy Cattle coulilbe found in the Commonwealtlh than those paraded for judgingat the last Show. Ayishires, Jerseys, Mvlilking Shorthoris,Illawarras and Holsteins were strongly represented, and tliheexcellence of the entries goes to prove that with a good seasonthe existing housing accommodation for these classes will beutterly inadequate.

Beef Cattle. The display of Herefords at this year's Show was said

to be the best that has ever graced the grounds, and thecomment was frequently heard that at no other Show in Aus-tralasia had finer young c'asses been seen. Although largerentries of Shorthorns have faced the judges, it is hard to con-ceive that representatives of this breed better in quality thanthose exhibited could be produced. As usual, the principalexhibitors in the Hereford and Shorthorn Classes were to befound in Messrs. J. H. McConnel & Son, Cressbrook; Mrs.E. Lumle Hill. Bellevue; C. E. McDougall, Lyndhurst, War-wick; The Angus Trustees of South Australia, and J. R.l.omax, Yamlilla.

Aberdeen Angue. This breed, which are such favourites in

cthlier parts of the world, are apparently only begin-ning to meet with the approval of Queensland breeders. Theentries were, in consequence, limited, but the quality of tilefew exhibited could only be described as superb. Messrs.W. M. Charles, of Gootchie, and (;. . Clark, of East Talgai, were the principal exhibitors.

Fat Cattle. That a drought existed, and that meat was

dear, was hard to conceive when one viewed the superbexhibits in the Fat ('attle Yards on the Exhibition Grounds. The entries were as numerous as in past years, and thequality in many cases could not be excelled. The excellenceof the pens of three bullocks may be judged from the factthat thie first prize went to Moore & Coy., Barambah, whiosethree representatives weighed 6,0081bs., whilst the MacanshiEst:te representatives w< ghed 52951bs. Thle winners werethree fine Herefords, and at auction were purchased by theAustralian Meat Export Coy. for £30 each. They wereslaughtered at the Cannon Hill meat works on Friday, August

Visits to Shows.During the year members of Council and

the secretary visited 36 Shows, viz.: - Beaudesert, bseenleign, blackall, boonah, Biggenden, Brookfield, Bunda-berg, ULnon, Crow's iAest, sk, '(Gayndah, Gymple, GlenInnes, Ipswicn, Kilcoy, rnmgaroy, Killarney, Lockyer, Lowood,Maryborough, Marburg, Nambour, North mine, Pomona, Rose-wood, RocKhampton, southport, Sydney, Toowoomba, Ten-terfield, Townsvilla, Wondal, Wvoombye, Woodford, warwickand Zillmere.

8ohool Children's Patriotio Demonstration.-Never in its history has the Exhibition Ground presented ascene of such unexampled interest as on the Saturday after-noon of Show Week, wl'en an attendance, which was un-doubtedly a record for the grounds, witnessed a patrioticdisplay by 5,000 children trom the State Schools of the metro-pohtan area. These splendid young Queenslanders, sturdy oflimb, full of life and well-clad, rormed a spectacle to make theheart beat quicker with pride of the grand old race to whichthey belonged. From an unusually early hour in the morningcrowds of spectators began to arrive, until by mid-day stand-ing room only was announced, and when His Excellency andLady Goold-Adams entered the grounds at 2 o'clock, not aspare inch of even standing room was available, every roof andother vantage point carried its load of spectators, and that theday passed oft without accident, reflects the greatest creditupon the general management of the Show officials, assistedby the Police, and still more so by the teachers, whose disci-pline during school hours bore good fruit on this occasion. There was a dazzling display of life and colour as the groupsformed up within the ring enclosure, each in the costume of.the Nation or State represented. The first part of the dis-,play consisted of Physical Drill by girls and boys who werekeen rivals. This was followed by a grand march in spiralformation, the five thousand children being divided into sec-tions, each section representing one or other of the AlliedNations-Britain and her Dependencies, which included thewhole of the States of Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania,'Canada, India, South Africa, and Egypt-France, Russia,Belgium, Italy, Servia and Japan.

The Governor, standing on a platform in front of the*Grandstand, took the salute as each group marched past. Itwas a sight the like of which has never before been seen here,:and one which caused a thrill of pride to go through the heartof every spectator on the grounds. A feature of the Marchwas the national air of each country represented, played by"the band as the countries represented marched past. Thedesigning of the picturesque costumes was the work of the

teachers, and too much praise cannot be bestowed upon thenumber who devoted their time and skill in the determinatorn.to make the school portion of the function a success.

Cottage Carden Competition. An innovation in Show Competitions was introduced this

year in the form of a competition for Cottage Gardens, openonly to amateurs, and solely the work of the competitor orfamily, no outside labour of any sort being permitted.

lhe competition was due to the efforts of Mr. P. J.Symes, member of Council, who considered that the encour-agement of Cottage Gardens competitions would enable manycompetitors, who otherwise would have to pay substantialamounts to market gardeners for vegetables, to contribute a.portion of the amount saved to the Patriotic and Red CrossFunds, this aspect being quite apart from the beautificationof premises which would result from the healthy rivalry intro-duced.

Prizes amounting to £22 were offered, and resulted in 36,entries being received. Competing gardens were located inevery part of Brisbane and suburbs, from Bald Hills in theNorth, to Corinda, in the South, and from Morningside, in theEast, to Enoggera, on the West

Messrs. J. F. Bailey, Government Botanist, and JohnSoutter, of the Agricultural Department, were the Judges, andcarried out the duties attached to the arduous position in ahighly satisfactory manner. In the Report submitted by theJudges, Mr. W. Greenslade, of Clayfield, was placed first with48) points, Mr. J. Smith, of Church Street, Red Hill, second, with 47k, and Mr. W. Brewster, of Byrne Estate, third, with47 points. The closeness of these points will amply demon-strate how keen was the competition. The Judges reportedthat Mr. Greenslade's was an ideal cottage garden, sufficientplants being grown to beautify the home on the one hand, and supply the household vegetable requirements on the other.Flattering reference is also made to te gardens of the second'and third prize winners. It is anticipated that many of thecompetitors, as the result of the experience gained on thisyear, will grealy improve their little holdings, and score evencloser points in future competitions.

Arrival of our New Covernor, Sir Hamilton J. Coold-Adams.On 15th March, His Excellency Sir Hamilton J. Goold-

Adams, G.C.M.G., C.B.. arrived in Brisbane, and amongstthose to meet him on the wharf were members of Council ofthis Association. In the afternoon of that day members ofyour Council waited upon His Excellency at Parliament House, and presented the following address, which was acknowledgedby His Excellency in a few graceful sentences.

fashioned seat. Tihe riders had no stirrups, consequently had toabandon Hie crouching position. The weight was thus more evenlydistributed, and the correct equilibrium maintained in rising and land-ing, which is seldom observed in the modern style of riding. The bare-back Hunting Contest was won by Miss Shields, of Bundaberg, whogave a magnificent display of horsemanship.

An important matter that was freely discussed at the Show by.owners of stud horses was the proposed stallion tax. A championprize-winner said that the owners of good horses did not get any en-couragement to keep first-class animals when they had to compete withrubbish standing for public service. As an evidence of the deteriora-tion of the horses in this State, it may be mentioned that the big prizes, with few exceptions, went to horses bred in the other States. Indays gone by that was not the case. I am pleased to say that everyhorse breeder of note whom I spoke to favoured the proposed stalliontax, but of course there was a wide difference of opnion as to theworking details of the Bill. The proposal to apply, the tax to providepremiums for approved stallions appeared, however, to meet withgeneral acceptance. The Minister for Agriculture has definitely statedthat the necessary legislation will be introduced next year, and it issafe to say that no Bill is more needed in the pastoral interests of thisState than to check the downward grade of one of our greatest nationalassets-a large supply of good horses.

There were a few accidents, but I am pleased to say with nofatal results.

. As an evidence of the attractiveness of our programme, I maymention that horses from outside of Hughenden in the North, down toAdelaide in the South, practically, ranging over one-half of Australia, met on our grounds.

In conclusion, I would like to specially mention the excellent workdone by the Honorary Stewards who kept the events running up totime, the Grounds' Staff, our Caretaker (Mr. McMillan), who had thering in its usual splendid condition, and the Ring Steward, Mr. B. L.George, who satisfactorily performed his arduous duties.

9th September, 1915. ERNEST BAYNES.

The Dairy Cattle 8eotlion.

Mr. W. J. Affleck reports :-The Council would not have been astonished if there had been

a falling off in the number of exhibits in this section. Throughout theyear drought had played hardly with the dairyman, and the price offeed during June and July. was more than most men could stand.Notwithstanding this difficulty, hewever, the leading studmasters-andthe beginners in the breeding business, too-came out with practicallythe same number of animals as last year. The display was a mag-nificent one. In most of the sections the quality of the exhibits waseven higher than the high standard set last year. In the Jersey sec-tion there were over thirty, imported animals. The Ayrshire sectionwas strong, but the Milking Shorthorn and Illwarra sections fellaway just a little. This was easily accounted for by the drought, asthese breeds are ever adding to their popularity.

The new Judging ring, completed during the year, proved a boonand exhibitors generally expressed themselves as delighted with thecomforts and arrangements provided for them.

ANNUAL MEETING OF THE CHAMBER OF AGRICULTURAL001IETIE8.

ADDRESS BY THE GOVERNOR.

The sixth annual general meeting of the Queensland Chamber ofAgricultural Societies was held in the National Association Rooms, Ex- .hibition Grounds, on the Tuesday night of Show Week, when 35 dele-gates, representing different show societies in Queensland, were present.Mr. John Macdonald presided, and His Excellency the Governor, who wasattended by Captain Couzens, A.D.C., was also present.

In his retiring address the Chairman referred with pleasure to thepresence of His Excellency. The Chamber comprised some 57 associa-tions, and successful work had been done during the year.

The annual report, which was adopted, referred to the war, andpride was expressed that, with the exceplion of a few societies situatedin dry pastoral localities, every afllliated society had lield its annualshow, and in no instance had the Chamber been advised of a falling offin receipts. Regret was expressed at the departure of Sir WVilliam Mac-Gregor, and a welcome was tendered to Iis Excellency Sir HamiltonGoold-Adanis. Mlembers of the Executi\ve had attended over 20 shows, and with pleasure they reported on a general improvement in the sys-tems of actual slhow majiagement. Between Jan. 12 and May 5, 46 s'tal-lion inspectlions had been held, but tlie dep)letion of tile Government vet-erinary staff owing to menlbers Joining thlie Expeditionary Forces had re-suited in the cancellation of all dates after May 12. Altogether 300stallions lhad been inspected, and of that nullber 25 hiad been rejectled.Regret was expressed that no legislation had been introduced to copewith the question of dealing with rejects, as the animals could standfor public' service witl impnily. Tlhie iletlhnd of combaling this menaceto successfull horse breeding iln Quel'ensland was one which had beenreceiving earnest consideration at tiIe Ihands of t lie Executive, andreflercince was iialdei' the Itwo deputations which had waited on Hlon.Jolin White, then Minister foIr Agricullr' and Sltock and the presentMinister, IIon. W. Lenion. To priviint Queensland being iiiade a dump-ing grounl fur undesirable' stallions, it was suggeslted that no animalshould be allow,'d to land unless accompanied by, .; ((a overniet veter-inary certitl'ath. A. siuggeslion was advanced that. a comlittee of prac-tical horsemein mighit lie appointed by tlih Minister for Agriculture andStock to cointrol the examina ion and registralion o(f all stallions in theState, and report direct It, tlie Minister. Such cnnimittees might beappointed in lrisbane, Hl, ekhamnplon, and Townsville, respectively, duties to consist of liih supervision, exainination, alil registration of allstallions iln lieir respctlive dislricls, and that a (.iovernmell t or c'er-tifeatid veterinary surgeoin examine all stallions for' such features ofhereditary iinsoiiundness as tlih chief co(lllllntte' might lay down, a Hoardof Appeal to be constituted. It was confidently expected that Mr. Len-non's sympliathetic reception of the suggestions submitted by, the depu-tation would eventually result in the necessary protective measuresbeing granted. The second volume of the " Draught Horse Stud Book "would, unfortunately, not he published until after the date of the annualmeeting. The fact thal many breeders and owners of valuable animalscould give little or no Information regarding the breceding of what theytermed " stud " animals was deplorable, but lie Executive was consider-

ing methods by which it was hoped breeders would be brought intocloser sympathy with the work of the stud book. Refernc'e was madeto the serious question of clashing of show dates, and it was suggestedthat all societies notify the Chamber promptly.

Mr. E. Baynes said lie understood from the lion. W. Lennon thatnext year the present Government intended to seriously consider thequestion of imposing a stallion tax. lie read a letter from Mr. .1. Love(Townsville) staling that one-half of the horses in the North were ofno value either for riding or driving. This had been brought about byindiscriminate breeding,. lie knew of one case where a bIreeder hadbeen breeding stock from a stallion and its progeny for the last 30 years. He favoured a stallion tax, which would approximaltely return £100,000per year. A portion (of this Ioney, Mr. Love' suggested, should be usedin giving substantial prizes for stud stock, and be spent on importingperfect animals. Mr. Haynes said Mr. Love's experience and knowledgewere unique. lie llhe speaker) thought they should do everything pos-sible to build up the Iherds of the State.

Mr. W. . Affleeck said lie regretted that the " riiauglit Stud Book "had not been publishedl. lHe urged all owners to forward more completeinformation. IIe thought draught breeders should form an associationof their own, and atllliate with .the Chamber.

The health of His Excellency, was proposed by the Chairman, whoreferred to His Excellency's keen interest in agriculture

Messrs. Affleck and C. J. Booker, M.L.A., supporled the toast, which was enthusiastically honoured.

His Excellency, in returning thanks, said lie appreciated the kindlyand complimnenlary remarks regarding himself. He congratulatedQueensland on the possession of a Chamber of Agricultural Societies, which could be the means of greatly advancing the primary and second-ary, industries. He nmentioned tlie success attained in South Africa bythe institution of a judges' society, whlicli acted as instructor and edu-cator to the young farmers. The judges were trained to adjudicate bya uiform method. Ile favoured uniformity in judging, and thoughtjudges' societies shouhld be started in Qucensland.

Notices of motion dealing witli the que.stion of revising toe ruleswere discussed. Eventually it was decided to allow each soci'ty withl75 members to nominate a member to thlie Executive Council. At theinitiation of thie Killarney Agricultural Siociety, it was decided that stepsbe taken to secure free railway passes for all societies' delegates attend-ing thlie anniual conference. Tlhe meeting resolved, on the motion of MrE. T. Bell, M.L.A., representing Fassifern, that steps be taken to inter-view the Department of Agriculture and Stock on the subject of sub-sidy paid to agricultural societies, requesting lthe Department to havethe amount paid as subsidy a flxed sum per pound, thereby enablingsocieties to ascertain the exact amount they would receive each year.Mr. II. A. Jones, representing the Wide Bay. and Burnett Society, moved, and it was carried,-" Tat no affiliation withli subsidiary societies, suiclias dog or poutry societies, he made by any societly unless the rules, etc., had first been submitted to I lhe Chamber." Also, " That no leasesor lending of horses or cattle, dogs, etc., for show purposes be recog-nised by any society., unless the lease had been registered with tIieChlanber at the date of entry. Mr. Pryce (Toogoolawah) complainedthiat on o special cattle train not enough accommodation had been pro-vided for the attendants, The Chairman promised to attend to tie coiii-plaint.

The following otnlcers were elected:--President, Mr. J.lhn Ma:c-donald; vice-presidents, Messrs. (G. H. Pritchard and A. HI. M'Shane;hon. treasurer, Mr. W. J. Affleok; hion. auditor, Mr. C. J. Booker, M.L.A.:lion. secretary, Mr. J. Bain.
