Our food has never been as safe as it is today!
BUT……
• 1.8 million people die each year because of contaminated food and water
• It is estimated there are 2 billion cases of food borne illnesses each year
• It is estimated that in Western developed countries 1 out of 4 - 6 people suffer from a food borne disease each year
• USA: Food borne illnesses causes annually 5000 deaths per year and $162 billion costs
And what about food security and sustainability?
• The worlds population grows to 9,3 billion in 2050. That is an extra 2,3 billion to feed, 7 times the size of the USA!
• Over 1/3 of all children are malnourished and 6 million children die each year of malnutrition related causes
• 1/3 of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted (1,3 billion tons)
• Carbon food print of all ingredients for a mascarpone chocolate desert can take up to 33.000 food miles
• The global livestock industry emits more greenhouse gas than all forms of transport
• 250 million children under the age of 12 are working for a salary
So we still have huge challenges!
