    1.0 Introduction:

With changing demographic, environmental and economic realities around the globe, architects, engineers, planners and designers bear a greater responsibility for creating a builtenvironment which is sensitive to the natural environment and responds to the interests ofthe society at large. In support of the above cause and as an area of research that deservespriority, the School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal (SPA Bhopal) is launching aNational Student Design Competition on Synergies between Nature and Buildings forEcotourism. The overall aim of this student competition is to generate design solutions thatcreate synergies between nature and buildings and promote awareness, understanding, enthusiasm and commitment to the natural environment.

    2.0 Description

The School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal, an autonomous institution of MHRD,Government of India, is a premier Institute of National Importance. It is committed to produceenvironmentally responsible architects and planners. The school is hosting this competitionalong with Madhya Pradesh Ecotourism Development Board which is an organization withthe Department of Forests, Govt. of M.P.

For this National Student Design Competition on Synergies between Nature and Buildingsfor Ecotourism the students are expected to design an ecotourism destination in a forestreserve at Laharpur, Bhopal which can serve as a model example of eco friendlyarchitecture for eco tourism in India. The students are encouraged to think beyond thetraditional practice of designing tourist resorts and come up with solutions that are sensitiveto ecological principals and generate awareness of the environment.

    Ecotourism in Madhya Pradesh

The natural heritage of Madhya Pradesh includes 2 biosphere reserves, 9 National Parks

and 25 Wildlife Sanctuaries, covering an area of 10,862 Sq. Kms. It is the leading tiger

    reserve in the country.

The tourism potential of these forest based natural assets is being developed and monitored

by the Madhya Pradesh Ecotourism Development Board (MPEDB). Since its constitution in

2005, the MP Ecotourism Board has developed 35 ecotourism destinations which are underoperation, and has several planned and potential sites for development state-wide.

Ecotourism destinations are often at cross purpose with their objectives. They are places of

high natural value at risk of being destroyed by people who visit them for their beauty.

Tourists want hotels, restaurants, shops and recreation activities which affect the ecology of

the place. The design of ecotourism destinations needs to address the demands of both the

site and the visitors. Also, it must serve the socio-economic objectives of ecotourism through

participation of the local community in its development and operation, and maximising the

returns of tourism for their livelihood.

To minimise the impact of tourism in nature based destinations and to improve the quality of

visitor experience, the Ecotourism Board seeks to improve the design of its facilities and

services by incorporating sustainable measures, such as including local vernacular

architecture, as well as appropriate technology making use of sun, wind and other renewable

energies for heating/cooling and lighting, rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling,

composting and managing solid waste disposal so as to minimise impact on the

environment. Besides minimising the negative impacts of tourism, an ecotourism destination

must enhance information and knowledge of visitors, about the importance of the natural

heritage and its ecological systems and other measures which are in harmony with the local

    ecosystem.

Further information about MPEDBs policy and programmes is available on their website

    www.mpecotourism.org

    3.0 Objectives of the Competition:

Generate a national level debate on Nature vs. Built Environment amongst

    architects, planners and design professionals.

Enhance the understanding and knowledge of practices in traditional and vernacular

architecture and its fusion with modern architecture.

Develop ideas on eco-centric building prototypes based on vernacular and traditional

    architecture.

4.0 Eligibility for participationTeams consisting of a maximum four students enrolled in degree/diploma-granting colleges

in India are invited to participate. Proposals may include consideration of more than one

discipline and may include: architecture, engineering, environmental design, forestry,

tourism, industrial design, interior design, interior architecture, landscape architecture,

regional and urban planning and design. The listed disciplines are not exclusive or limiting.

Multi-disciplinary teams are strongly encouraged. The student teams need to register prior to

6.0 Laharpur Ecotourism DestinationThe site selected for the competition is at Laharpur, located on the south-east edge of

Bhopal city, 23 12 N, 77 30E. The area of the site is 151,126 Sq.m. Bhopal has thedistinction of having several sites of unique natural value both within and around the city.

Some of the primary existing attractions are the Upper Lake and the Van Vihar protected

area, Kerwa dam, Kaliasot dam, Bhojpur Temple and Bhimbetka Caves, besides several

    smaller lakes and forests.

Laharpur is an emerging ecotourism destination of natural scenic value. It is situated on a

rocky plateau, the slopes are steep, covered in red soil. The MP Ecotourism Board is

developing a botanical garden in the Laharpur area, and intends developing facilities for

    ecotourism.

The organisers seek innovative, cutting-edge, contemporary proposals, which may also be

used as a prototype for other forest based ecotourism destinations within the State.

Participants are invited to explore ways to create spaces that promote awareness,

understanding, enthusiasm and commitment to the natural environment. Architecture should

assimilate the synergies of nature and building. Entries should show a commitment to an

approach and strategy for enhancing the resource potential of the protected natural area

through sensitive architecture displaying a deep understanding of the surrounding

    environment.

Proposals may include adaptations of vernacular and traditional architecture to new

technologies and alternatives to prevailing construction methods or even traditional

    architecture using natural materials.

Integration of the use of alternative energy sources for heating/cooling/lighting, rainwater

harvesting, grey water recycling, composting and solid and liquid waste management in the

design proposals is expected. The architecture must display an understanding of operation

and maintenance issues conforming to best international practices in ecotourism.

    Site for the Competition

Site ConsiderationsLaharpur area covers approximately 1700 Ha. and primarily the entire strata is of hard rock

and there is no source of available water except rain or deep tube well.

Though one deep tube well can offer complete harvesting for 10 acres of land for

appropriate greenery but location of water pockets and depth is uncertain at this hill top.

However, the existing and functioning bore-well at this place offers nearly 3 inches dia water

spout, which was made available at a depth of nearly 400 feet through rocks. Such bore-

well though possible but at a exorbitant expense.

The catchment of rainwater on this hill top is volumeness but entire rainwater drains down

and wasted for without any appropriate conservations.

Certain percolation tank is dug into 3 places and small natural lake also exists, which is

comparably of negligible size but no efforts to pump out recharge water through percolations

    have yet been made.

Other than rainy season and nearly 2 months during winter the temperature and humidity

is so high that it becomes impossible to let the plant survive. Temperature in Bhopal during

peak time ranges between 37 to 45 degree, which is so high that it becomes impossible to

make the fully grown plants or tree plantation survive.

    15/18

National Students Design CompetitionSynergies Between Nature and Buildings for Ecotourism

M.P. Ecotourism Development Board School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal

Plants require continuous watering and caring initially more and lack of water not only

hampers the growth but capillary permeability in the rocks drains most of the water besides

    the evaporation.

Laharpur area is surrounded by many villages and urban habitation, any efforts for plantation

or floriculture will be highly endangered by unruly cattle and trespassing flower pickers orwild animals.

Though cordoning the area with suitable fencing is possible but at an enormous expense.

Location of Laharpur is at such a vantage situation and need to develop this area especially

this being almost in the capital city Bhopal is so very necessary, but area being so large it

requires large fund to implement any appropriate proposal .

Water sources though available, but at a distant location and any methodology to make

water reach to the desired location will certainly cost heavily.

It requires combined efforts with dedicated spirit and determined attitude to implement this

ambitious proposal which in times to come undoubtedly would offer endless advantage to

the government but also for the entire community of Bhopal and adjoining villages.
