Introduction
The holy land of Baba Vishwanath, Varanasi or Banaras (also known as Kashi) is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Varanasi`s Prominence in Hindu mythology is virtually unrevealed. Mark Twain, the English author, who was enthralled by the legend and sanctity of Varanasi, once wrote: "Banaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together." Varanasi has been a symbol of Hindu renaissance, knowledge, philosophy, culture & has also been a great centre of learning for ages. Ayurveda has deep rooted connection with this holy land of knowledge as King Diwodas Dhanwantari and later his disciple Sushruta laid down the firm foundation of Ayurveda by writing the Sushruta Samhita which encompasses the technique of cadaveric preservation to plastic surgery. The ancient fundamental concepts and techniques described in the text of Ayurveda are still practical and valid in today's era also.
The great visionary Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandita Madan Mohan Malviya Ji, founded the Banaras Hindu University, "The Capital of Knowledge", at Varanasi, before Independence on Basant Panchami in the year 1916, with a vision of “Pratichi-Prachi Ka Mela Sundara (Amalgam of modern and ancient sciences) through interdisciplinary researches to explain our ancient wisdom in light of knowledge of modern tool and techniques. Therefore, In the year 1922, Ayurveda was established as a unit in Faculty of Oriental Teaching and Theology. In 1927, AMS degree course was started under Faculty of Medicine and Surgery (Ayurveda). In 1963, a post graduate Institute of Indian medicine was established.
Rachana Sharir was one of the section of the Department of Basic Principles, Faculty of Ayurveda, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, since 1979 onwards and in October 2006, this section was upgraded to a full-fledged Department. Rachana Sharir means Ayurvedic Anatomy which deals with living Anatomy as it encompasses structural and functional aspect of the body. It is a specialized branch having multi-dimensional teaching and research activities.
Srotas is one of the fundamental concept of Ayurveda which means the channels or pores present throughout the visible body as well as at the invisible or subtle level of cells, molecules, atoms and subatomic level. This concept has major role in understanding of the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the body as well as mind. A clear understanding of this concept may open new dimensions in the treatment of the diseases and understating all dimensions of a living body.
Therefore, the Department of Rachana Sharir under the dynamic patronship of our Chief Patron Prof Girish Chandra Tripathi, Honourable Vice-Chancellor- BHU, Varanasi, is organizing a "National Seminar On Recent Advances and
thFuture Prospects of Srotas Sharir" on date 29 April, 2017.
