Most countries that have built a strong manufacturing sector have done so on the back of strong exports. For India too, exports will be a critical component of its manufacturing growth. While the demand for exports has softened because of recent global volatility, India's exports sector has done relatively strongly over the last few months and is better positioned now due to a weaker currency and declining competitiveness of other export-oriented economies such as China.
This session would therefore focus on key trends, opportunities and challenges for export-oriented sectors.

Productivity and cost competitiveness are key drivers of advantage in the manufacturing sector. Globally, multiple changes are occurring to productivity and cost competitiveness aspects of different countries. While China's cost edge has been blunted across several areas of production due to structural changes such as currency and labor cost appreciation, Germany continues to be a strong exporter of manufactured goods despite very high factor costs of production.
This session will seek to highlight latest shifts in competitiveness of different countries and sectors, and also specific examples of competitiveness beyond structural advantages. The session will aim to draw out implications for Indian companies in terms of lessons to be learnt, opportunities to be tapped and impending threats to be wary of.

One of the biggest issues plaguing the manufacturing sector of late, has been the fluctuation in demand faced across sectors. In many sectors demand has fallen by 60%-70% from peak levels and is likely to bounce back to earlier peaks over the next few months. Managing fixed costs and ensuring competitiveness in the face of such volatility has come up as a key challenge across manufacturing sub-sectors.
This session will highlight specific approaches and best practices across key companies in creating flexible capacity to address volatility in demand.

Shortage of quality talent has been a core challenge of the manufacturing sector for long. The issue has gotten more severe and complex with the recent spate of labor issues in the industry. Rapid economic growth in erstwhile backward states has also caused a temporary migration of migrant laborers back to their home states. Several companies have continued to grow rapidly despite these issues, through a mix of innovative methods for accessing, retaining and training workers.
This session would seek to highlight latest approaches and key best practices deployed by companies who have successfully managed their skills challenge.
