HEALTH INFORMATION BULLETIN: ISSUE 2: VOLUME 2: 2014 The Notifiable Diseases analyses has been compiled from the Notifiable Disease Certificates received from ninety eight [98] sites nationally. This report has been compiled from 89% data from February 2013 and 77% of data from February 2014. The following division is congratulated for being the best division in NNDSS reporting: The poorest division remains Central division with 70% reporting for February 2014 and 83% reporting for February 2013; an improvement in reporting from the last month (20%). The Western division follows Central division with 89% reporting for February 2013 and 73% reporting for February 2014; an improvement of 33% compared to the previous month. The Northern division is at 82% in February 2014 and 84% in February 2013; an improvement by 24% compared to the previous month. There still needs to be substantial improvement in the notifiable certificate submissions and capture of notifiable diseases. All outbreak situations still require routine reporting on the Notifiable Disease Certificate. Timeliness of reporting needs marked improvement from all facilities in these divisions Notifiable diseases Certificate should be populated with all cases of notifiable diseases both suspected and lab confirmed cases. The NNDSS is under review and review updates will be available in the following bulletins. The Notifiable Diseases analyses has been compiled from the Notifiable Disease Certificates received

from ninety eight [98] sites nationally. This report has been compiled from 89% data from February 2013

and 77% of data from February 2014. The following division is congratulated for being the best division

in NNDSS reporting:

The poorest division remains Central division with 70% reporting for February 2014 and 83% reporting

for February 2013; an improvement in reporting from the last month (20%). The Western division

follows Central division with 89% reporting for February 2013 and 73% reporting for February 2014; an

improvement of 33% compared to the previous month. The Northern division is at 82% in February 2014

and 84% in February 2013; an improvement by 24% compared to the previous month. There still needs

to be substantial improvement in the notifiable certificate submissions and capture of notifiable

diseases. All outbreak situations still require routine reporting on the Notifiable Disease Certificate.

Timeliness of reporting needs marked improvement from all facilities in these divisions

Notifiable diseases Certificate should be populated with all cases of notifiable diseases both suspected

and lab confirmed cases.

The NNDSS is under review and review updates will be available in the following bulletins.

The top five diseases being most commonly reported nationally on the NNDSS are as follows (Refer to tables in annex):

1. Viral Illnesses (n = 10663) 2. Acute Respiratory Infections (n= 3467) 3. Influenza (n=2722) 4. Diarrhoea ( n=2388) 5. Dengue Fever (n= 1284)

There was an increase in reports of Dengue fever in 2014 compared to 2013. However, due to poor reporting of Dengue fever on the NNDSS, the Dengue fever outbreak was not captured comprehensively. The suspected cases of Dengue fever could have been reported under ‘viral illnesses’. Typhoid and Leptospirosis show relative stability in this surveillance. However, it must be noted that the data is only as good as the reports that are conveyed by practitioners.

There is a relative reduction in reported viral infections, diarrhea, conjunctivitis, and pneumonia and fish poisonings. Most cases are still poorly reported on this surveillance system which hampers the ability to appropriately surveil and inform preventive practice.

There are mild interdivision variances (ratings) in notifiable disease profiles. Generally the top five diseases are

illustrated below for period of report:

Central Western Northern Eastern

Viral Illness Viral Illness Viral Illness Influenza Dengue Fever Influenza ARI Viral Illness Diarrhoea ARI Influenza ARI ARI Diarrhoea Diarrhoea Diarrhoea Influenza Pneumonia Conjunctivitis Dengue Fever

The Central, Western and Northern divisions noted similar patterns of disease rankings (viral illness being rated the

highest). The Eastern division differed slightly with influenza ranking the highest. Disease reporting is based on clinical

diagnosis predominantly, and this is reflected in the disease rankings of the divisions.

The cases of unknown gender made up 23.2% (n=5060). This was a reduction in ambiguous reporting on gender

(23.8%). Aggregate reporting poses challenges to disaggregation of statistics and reporting for decision making.
