NATIONAL MATHS TALENT QUEST SUCCESS
Our Congratulations to Amy! Congratulations to Amy L. who's MTQ project ‘Thrilling Maths:
The Ride of Your Life’ won the National Award for best Year 6
individual project within Australia. She also took home the
prestigious Jim Trotter Perpetual Award at the recent Victorian
MTQ Awards Ceremony which is presented annually to the

extraordinary achievement, well done Amy!
On top of individual, group and class successes at the
Victorian Awards ceremony Milgate Primary School was
awarded an Outstanding School Award for the second year
running. Milgate was one of only six schools in Victoria to
receive this honour. It is a wonderful acknowledgement of the
hard work put in by all our students, parents and teachers this
year.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
During the last two weeks we have had some fantastic student achievements. We have had Maths
Talent Quest successes including Amy L. as the winner nationally; sporting successes with teams
winning their local finals and moving to the next level of competition; individual sporting successes in
athletics with a couple of students winning in state competitions and then going onto the National
competition; and Manningham Public speaking competition winners. What outstanding achievements
for Milgate PS students. Well done to all of them (see the front page of WHAM for more details of their
success)!!
‘Spell Great at Milgate’ Awards were presented on Monday at assembly for students in each class
who won the spelling competition. They will now compete against other students in their level in the
‘Spell Great at Milgate’ championship.
Recently the Year 1 and 2 students visited ‘Coopers Settlement’ at Bundoora Park. One of the
highlights was seeing the old house and also experiencing an old style classroom, having a lesson
and learning what school was like a long time ago. This excursion linked in with their PYP
transdisciplinary theme – ‘Where we are in Place and Time’ with a focus on: Learning about previous
generations helps us learn about relationships between the past and present.
MILFETE The Milfete 30th birthday celebration was a wonderful success. It was a great community event with
everyone working together – parents, students and staff. There has been a lot of positive feedback
from many people in our community. Everyone was having fun and enjoying the day. We were very
fortunate with the weather and so many people came to join in the celebrations. The students enjoyed
helping on the stalls and the many rides and amusements as well as the food stalls. The stage
performances provided a showcase of Milgate PS students’ talents and many people commented on
how good it was to see the students performing. This also provided a great opportunity for them to
perform in front of an audience.
The Milfete committee began planning the 30th birthday event during 2011. It was led and co-
ordinated by an enthusiastic and committed group of parents. Special thanks to Liz Phillips and
Danielle Dobson who led the Milfete committee. Thank you to the following parents who organized
various aspects: food stalls - Jodie Harris, Stadium merchandise stalls – Piri Edwards, ‘Milgate’s Got
Talent’ performances – Natasha Ballingall and Maria Tommasoni, Class stalls – Kristy Hourmouzis
and Sponsorship – Nicole Turner. Thanks also to the Parent Reps and many other parents who
assisted in so many ways before, during and after the event. It was a true community and team effort
with everyone working together. Milfete raised an amazing $22,000 (including the raffle, cake stall &
book stall) but most importantly it was an outstanding celebration of our wonderful school community.
PREP TRANSITION The pre-school children who will be in Prep in 2013 have been coming to Milgate PS each Friday
morning over the last 3 weeks as part of the transition program in preparing them for school. This
Friday is their last transition session. The children have been doing a variety of activities including
Teddy Bear Maths, Teddy Bear Literacy, art activities with teddy bears and using iPads for Maths. On
their last transition day, the children will meet the students in Year 5 who will be their Year 6 buddies
in 2013. They will have a snack together, read stories and the buddies have made special teddy
bears to give to their Prep 2013 buddy. While the children have been doing activities, the parents
have enjoyed meeting other parents over morning tea and learning about various aspects of the
school such as: School vision and direction, Reading, Writing, P&F, School Council, uniforms,
canteen and preparing their child for school. It has been a very successful program with the students
enjoying it and becoming more confident each week as they come to school.
NEW WEBSITE In the next couple of weeks when you access the Milgate Primary School website you will notice
some changes. Sponsor-ed, our website provider, has updated the portal with changes to the look of
the website providing more options and updates for the school to use. We are currently updating all of
our information and streamlining the website to make it more user-friendly. Thank you to Mark
Roberts who has spent many hours updating the website and keeping the website updated on a
regular basis with some staff also assisting.
THANK YOU - WORLD TEACHERS AND ESO STAFF DAY Thank you to all the students and parents who made special cards, brought flowers, gifts, etc for their
teachers and ESO staff in appreciation for their contributions to students’ learning and lives at school.
It was much appreciated by everyone. Thank you!
BENDIGO BANK – SWITCH TO SAVE INITIATIVE Milgate PS was presented with a cheque for $799 from the
Bendigo Bank by Lisa Jones. It is the commission we received
from the 'Switch to Save' program. In this program, a number
of households in this area have had energy saving switches
installed and for each switch installed, Milgate received a
commission. This money will contribute to the learning
resources for students in the school. Congratulations and
thank you to all the families that participated in this very
worthwhile program.
STUDENT SAFETY When entering and leaving the school ground near Landscape Drive, both parents and students are
asked to follow the pathways and not to cut across the car park as there may be cars driving in or out
and we don’t want an accident to happen. So please use the designated pathways for safety reasons.
When crossing the roads around the schools, use the school crossings so everyone remains safe.
Thank you for your assistance with this.

2012 MILGATE PS YEARBOOK We have had an amazing response from our expression of interest to the 2012 Milgate PS Yearbook.
There have been over 300 copies ordered and we are now sending the book in for printing. The
yearbook looks spectacular and I would like to thank and congratulate Miss Turner and Miss Kolovos
for their commitment and hard work in producing this keepsake.
A payment form will be sent home to all families who expressed an interest in purchasing the
yearbook next week. We have kept the 2012 yearbook to the low cost of $12 and I’m sure that all
members of the Milgate community will be very pleased with the glossy magazine.
AUSVELS AND AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM Within Victorian schools since 2006 we have used the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS)
curriculum. VELS was designed and endorsed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority
(VCAA) and has provided a framework for all Victorian schools for the last seven years.
In 2013 a national Australian Curriculum will be introduced to all schools across Australia. The
curriculum will span from Foundation (current Prep year) to Year 10. In 2013 Victorian schools will
incorporate the Domains of English, Mathematics, History and Science into the school curriculum.
The VCAA has decided to merge aspects of VELS with the Australian Curriculum and it has named
this AusVELS.
The Australian Curriculum has been written to equip young Australians with the skills, knowledge and
understanding that will enable them to engage effectively with and prosper in a globalised world. The
introduction of AusVELS will provide subtle changes to the curriculum and will focus on the following
cross-curriculum priorities:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures
Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia
Sustainability.
Over the coming newsletters I will provide an introduction to the four Domains that we will incorporate
into our school curriculum in 2013 and explain how it differs from our current curriculum design.
If you would like to learn more about AusVELS and the Australian Curriculum please visit the
AusVELS website at www.ausvels.vcaa.vic.edu.au.

parents to make secure payments via their banking system at any time directly to school without
sending credit card details or cash with their students. Each family will be allocated a unique reference
number which must be included in the details when processing the payment. The biller code and
reference number will appear on your statements. Parents can choose which method of payment they
prefer. Further information and statements will be issued shortly.

As part of their Literacy studies this term, students in Level 3 have been learning how to create
effective Information Reports and Poems. They have put their studies into practice so here are
some examples of the excellent texts they have produced.
PAT THE DANGEROUS CAT Pat is ginger cat, A cringer cat, A ginger cat. With claws that sting before they touch, For his prey it’s just too much. So ever before him ever close, Pat gives them a warning dose. Pat has stripes of grey-ish blacky, Of which his mother calls rather tacky. Pat walks around with a spear in his paw, for he likes to eat his prey juicy and raw. Pat has a friend by the name of Grouch, Who’s practically spent his whole life on the couch. Sometimes Pat comes over for a game, But with video games he’s actually really lame. So now you know not to mess with Pat, For he truly is a dangerous cat. Briana F. 4BW
There was a cat called Fox,
Who liked throwing rocks,
there was a cat called Felix,
Who liked doing tricks.
Together they were great,
And decided to invade the milfete,
They would run and run and run,
To steal the ride Hot Gun.
So they came up with a plan,
Which needed help from a man,
Who’s name was Mr Hopper,
And owned his own chopper.
So they hooked it up to the ride,
And it lifted up as the children cried,
So the people were not in time,
To stop the cat crime.

Meerkats by Sarah H.4GA This is an information report about an amazing animal, the meerkat. Meerkats are very cheerful creatures. A meerkat is a mammal that has pointed ears and patchy brown fur. Meerkats have very sharp claws and excellent eyesight, which can spot an eagle in flight more than 300 metres away. A newborn meerkat weighs up to 30 grams. Meerkats communicate by talking in a squeal. When meerkats are in danger, they let out a high pitched squeal that their family will recognize so they can help.
Meerkats live in groups of up to 40 and they live underground in lots of tunnels. Meerkats dig the tunnels with their sharp claws and there is a room, which is a space in the dirt, where the meerkats sleep. Meerkats live in deserts or grasslands where the tunnels are easier to dig and the climate is hot. Most of the time, meerkats eat small insects like spiders or beetles, but sometimes they eat larger creatures like scorpions as well. When meerkats eat scorpions the first thing they eat is the sting, so the scorpion won’t sting them. Then they devour the rest of the scorpion. Delicious! Meerkats also eat berries that they can find in bushes and trees. Meerkats normally walk on two legs, but when they jump, they jump on all four legs. Meerkats are very curious, playful and active, and live for up to ten years. They are one of the most interesting creatures on earth, and I hope you agree with me as well.

Bald Eagles by Samir G.4GA
The Bald Eagle is an eagle with a white head and yellow beak. The name ‘Bald’ comes
from the English word ‘balde’ which means white.
Fast Facts: This animal is a unique type of bird. Females are smaller than males and
grow up to one metre long.
Flying: When these eagles fly they lift half their body weight. Their 2.4m widespread
wings help the eagles soar over 3048m high and swoop up to 161kph!
Food Source: These eagles are like regular eagles eating fish from the sea water. This
animal’s amazing eyesight helps them see fish from 1.6km away, that’s longer than you
can see! Bald Eagle’s strong claws help them catch fish double their body and females
grow up to 4kg.
Breeding: When the baby hatches they are called Eaglets. The father eagle grabs
sticks and leaves to build up the nest. These nests are called Aeries. The nests are
usually very big and heavy. One nest in America was 2.7m wide, 6.1m tall and weighed
1814kg.
Predators: Eagle’s main predators are crocs and some snakes but they mainly die
because their habitat or food source has been taken away from them. For 40 years
people have been trying to save this amazing bird. Sometimes eagles also die from old
age because they die at just 35 years old.
Habitat: Bald Eagles mainly live in South America because of the climate and because of
the fish that live there, the fish that live there are extremely tasty from the eagle’s
point of view.
Bald eagles are very unique because of the amazing things they do and I think that we
should try and save this wonderful animal from extinction.
Bibliography: National Geographic for Kids The focus of our inquiry is to consider how significant events have shaped us individually, as a community,
nationally and globally. We listed many events important to Australia's history including the arrival of the First Fleet and wrote some journal entries from an indigenous person's perspective.
25/1/1788 It was a hot summer evening everything was silent apart from Benelong telling an old dreamtime tale. This
morning we all woke to here an alarm call from Benelong “Stranger! Stranger!’ and there they were, coming they were just beyond the horizon.
They were here. Strange people wearing stuff covering their bodies, it was a confusing scene. Once we had talked for a bit we all danced to help introduce our culture to them. I danced with a young lady called Elizabeth It was a magical night.
26/1/1788 Suddenly we all woke to the sound of banging. The British were cutting down trees and putting up tents. We
asked what they were doing and they said “we are clearing the land so it can be lived on…. Properly’. We got angry because we were all getting ill and dying because of something called the small pox, We were
disappearing by the minute. I rushed around warning others until there was a final battle, Then Bennelong was kidnapped all seemed lost ……
I hope journal has been found so people know the truth I’m afraid this is my last entry. Koombala……by Claudia M. 4AD

I’m in the crowd,
I found my seat
And I’ve sat down.

Taken by 16,
And I have won.

On horse 16,
I’m feeling hungry
And I get out my bag of beans.
5. I get my money,
It’s time to leave,
I get in the car,
And i shoot off like a bee.

I buy the donuts,
I really want.

5 beans to go,
When I’ve eaten them up,
I’m already home.
CASSE (Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment) COMMUNITY NEWS
Keep it age appropriate
Think twice (and say your child’s age out loud “in your head”) before saying yes to advanced technology
(phones/Internet/Facebook). Just because “everyone else’s kid is doing it” doesn’t make it a good idea. Don’t
be afraid to do what you feel is right for your child at their particular age. Explain your reasoning and
remember that children actually need boundaries to feel safe. They need your leadership, and saying “no”
can be a very good thing.
Think twice before turning on that adult reality TV show, PG, M or R-rated movie, or Teen or M-rated video
game. Again, just because “everyone else’s kid is doing it” doesn’t make it a good idea for your child at their
age! Saying “no” might be the best way to teach your child about the importance of taking a stand when it
comes to important values discussions.
Be a role model
Encourage your children to be open-minded about issues that often play a role in bullying situations
(meaning: kids DO notice and talk about these things!):
• obvious physical differences among human beings: weight, height, race
• religion or country of origin
• length of time in a school or town
• degree of popularity
• which sports are played or which activities are participated in
• home/family situation (married, divorced) or whether both parents work, or not
• amount of money parents make (including mother compared to the father)
• medical conditions or behavioural disorders.
Be mindful of cliques in schools or neighbourhoods or in extra-curricular groups your children participate in.
Do what we can as parents to model — and encourage — inclusiveness. Be on the lookout for new families
in your schools and neighbourhoods and make the most of these teaching moments to discuss — and
demonstrate — kindness and openness.
Never underestimate the influence you have over your children. YOU are their most influential teacher. They
watch and absorb everything you do: how you react to and process everyday situations, how you relate to
your peers, your spouse, people working in and around your home, their teachers, drivers on the road.
Everything. All the time!
