BIRTHDAY OF GREAT MATHEMATICIAN S. RAMANUJAN
To mark the birthday of one of the greatest Mathematician of the era S. Ramanujan
Department of Applied Sciences and Humanities of PIEMR celebrated National Mathematics
Day on 22nd December, 2020 Catalysed and Supported by “National Council for Science

Technology (MPCST), Bhopal. Due to Pandemic of Covid-19 whole event was organized
virtually On-line but the students showed lot of enthusiasm & participated overwhelmingly in
various intra-college competitions like poster making, video/ short film, project (best out of
waste), article writing and Online Quiz.
The event started traditionally by Saraswati Vandana followed by opening remarks by
Dr. Manojkumar Deshpande, Director PIEMR where he addressed the students saying we
have legacy of mathematics because zero was given by India therefore all engineers should
focus on mathematics, make friendship with mathematics because applications of
mathematics are at many places like design or simulation etc
The event became more fascinating due to the presence of eminent personalities Dr. V.K.
Gupta, Professor & Head, Mathematics and Director Ramanujan Research Centre of
Mathematics at Government Madhav Science PG College, Ujjain and Dr. Smita Verma, Head
Applied Mathematics & Computational Science at SGSITS, Indore.
In his address to students on the occasion Dr V.K. Gupta said he is reading S. Ramanujan
since last 35 years and stressed that being engineers we should carry forward the work of
mathematics wizard who solved around 4000 theorems and problems that will be the right
tribute to him on his birth anniversary.
Dr. Smita Verma informed that it was during the tenure of Dr. Manmohan Singh that 22nd
December was National Mahematics day to raise awareness among students about
importance of mathematics and to encourage students by organizing various seminars &
