National Librarians’ Day is being observed on August 12 every year in
India, in remembrance of Padmashri Dr. S. R. Ranganathan on his birth
anniversary (1892-1972), who is considered as father of library science
in India. Dr. Ranganathan dedicated his entire life to library profession
in India leaving a rich legacy. Some significant work of Dr. S.R.
Ranganathan include; Five Laws of Library Science i.e. i). Books are
for use. ii.) Every reader his/her book. iii). Every book its reader. iv).
Save the time of the reader. v). The Library is a growing organism. The
Government of India awarded Padmashri to Dr. S.R. Ranganathan for
his valuable contributions to Library Science.
To commemorate the 128th birth anniversary of Dr. S. R.
Ranganathan, the Institute Library, Regional Institute of Education,
Bhubaneswar (NCERT) celebrated National Librarian’s Day on 12th
August 2020. The occasion was graced by Prof. P.C. Agarwal, Principal
R.I.E. Bhubaneswar, Prof. B.N. Panda, Dean Research and Dr. (Mrs.)
P.L. Negi, Deputy Librarian with all library staff of the Institute Library.
The programme began with the lightening of the lamp with floral tribute
to Dr. S. R. Ranganathan. All staff of Library paid homage and tribute
to eminent Guru Dr. S.R Ranganathan on this auspicious occasion. On
the occasion Prof. P.C. Agarwal, Principal highlighted on the important
role of the Library Professionals and the staff in making the library an
excellent abode of knowledge and appreciated the hard work of library
staff for maintaining and providing effective library services. He also
talked about the ongoing programme for development of Institutional
Repository of R.I.E. with objectives to create global visibility to the
institutional publications and to encourage Open Access (OA)
movement, to support teaching, learning, research and scholarly
communication processes, and to support digital preservation and future
use. Prof. Panda encouraged the library professionals with his word of
inspiration, and mentioned that the legacy of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan is
revisited on this occasion and motivated each one of us to work hard
with sincerity and dedication for the greater cause of the library and
library profession. Dr. P.L. Negi appreciated the efforts of her
colleagues in the library to extend all their cooperation.
