The Class of 2015 sponsored and manned a water booth for the Ronald McDonald House’s annual Walk for Kids. The event was held at the Honda Center in Anaheim. The young men arrived early in the morning on April 12th to set up their water station. Throughout the walk, they were responsible for the booth and passed out waters to participants in the event. In the March meeting, we had a great speaker, Shayne Garcia who spoke to us about the dangers of E- cigarettes. After our speaker we made Easter baskets for the kidsat the Friendly Center. We also made dog toys out of old towels for the OC Animal Center. We concluded the meeting with tacos and St. Patrick's Day themed cookies.

In March, the National League of Young Men, Greater Orange Chapter’s Class of 2016 hosted an etiquette luncheon. Theresa Thomas showed both the men from the National League of Young Men (NLYM) and the women from the National Charity League (NCL) the proper way to act in situations that require a more sophisticated approach, such as, at business meetings and interviews. The young men and women learned proper etiquette throughout a ve course meal, as well as, where each of our dierent utensils belong on the table. We learned a many dierent things, including how to shake hands when meeting someone, how to eat bread at a restaurant, and even how to drink in a respectful manner. These lessons were a great life experience that will allow us to excel in business situations in the future. In January, the NYLM Juniors had a meeting with Mr. Joseph Mealy, a clothing specialist at Neiman Marcus. Mr. Mealy talked to the young men about “dressing for success” including what to wear at a job or collegeinterview, as well as our anytime, anywhere closet. After listening to the presentation, the Junior class teamed up with the Senior class and put together craft bags for the “Happy Cart” at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis Tennessee. Together, the men created hundreds of gift bags for hospitalized children in need. For our April meeting, the Class of 2016 met at the Patel's house to discuss money management and skills with our own Ray Michael's dad. We were taught in depth about credit scores, debit and credit cards, and loans. After we adjourned our meeting, we got to making over 200 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in an assembly line fashion, which resulted in most of us having to change our shirts.

For our March meeting at the Garcia’s residence, our vice president, Brendan Salgado, took attendance, with three people absent, as Kane Acosta, our president, called the meeting to order at 2:09pm. We had a word from our ocials and tended to the old business of how we plan on using our $780. We decide to split the money on dierent materials. Tanner introduced our speaker for the meeting, which was Mr. Somerdike, a specialist in physical therapy. He spoke to us about the necessary nutrients for our bodies. His overall message was that the variance between people cause dierent needs in specic nutrients. The dierent sports we participate in is one of the major factors in our intake of nutrients. The meeting was adjourned at 2:21 and after the sophomore class created Easter baskets lled with toys and Easter eggs lled with candy. Every member had their own basket to donate to a worthy cause. What a fabulous day for our boys. The people at the Isaiah house were so overjoyed and grateful for all the items we brought to them! The Class of 2017 donated 200 pairs of socks, 168 deodorants, 507 razors, nearly 150 men’s undergarments, and 60 women’s undergarments. Ryan Alvarez, Parker Young, and Matt Brand represented NLYM, Greater Orange and spent the day there to hand out many of the items we brought to them. They also helped serve lunch and clean up. It truly was such a great experience for everyone involved!

The Class of 2018 began our year with Ed Howard, Principal of Villa Park High School as an informative speaker on time management and navigating high school. After Mr. Howard spoke the boys worked on organizing and packaging the school supply donations that they brought in that were donated to a Santa Ana school in need of supplies. In November, our guest speaker, Chris Lamb spoke on the nuances of public speaking. He encouraged the boys to actively participate in conversations. In addition, the boys had the good fortune to meet Mr. Dyk from the Villa Park Marine Thanksgiving Program who spoke on the history of the event in Villa Park and highlighted its phenomenal growth over the past several years. The November philanthropy really tied in to support the Villa Park Marine Thanksgiving as the boys expertly wrapped the gifts that each visiting Marine would receive Thanksgiving Day. They also chose Think Together as the recipient of any monies raised as a result of the parent fundraiser at The Post. In January, John Somerndyke, from Orange Coast Physical Therapy spoke to the group about sports related injuries, proper nutrition, and the importance of sleep as it relates to young athletes. He also elded excellent questions presented to him by the boys. For their January philanthropy the Class of 2018 brought in new sports shoes for children that were donated to Shoes That Fit an organization that supplies new shoes to children in need in the Southern California area. During their March meeting the boys were able to listen to Brandon Huie from California Youth Service who shared his life story and his road to recovery with the boys. He was an excellent speaker and really reached out in the hopes of preventing young adults from taking the path that he took. He encouraged the membership to avoid drugs and alcohol misuse. Their March philanthropy was for the Friendly Center’s Spring Fun Days. The boys brought in candy and toiletries such as tooth paste, deodorant, and shampoo to add to the gift baskets. They did an outstanding job creating some pretty impressive baskets. Our April meeting was our joint meeting with the Class of 2017. It was held at the Bui home where the boys listened to guest speakers, Mr. and Mrs. Prescott of the Prescott Cotillion who spoke in detail about etiquette, attire for social functions, and the role the cell phone plays in potential employers perception of candidates, they also spoke on social media’s role in both the college and employer interview process. After the speaker, the two classes worked together to create activity bags for the Ronald McDonald House in Orange. The Class of 2018 had a very productive year and the boys really came together as a group when working on their philanthropy projects.

Benit Event

The National League of Young Men (NLYM), Greater Orange Chapter, held a Wine Tasting Event at The Post at Rockwell's on February 19th. It was an evening lled with delicious food, enticing wine, beautiful music, and wonderful friends. The Fund Development Committee, led by 5th Vice President, Rosie Michel, organized the event. The event benetted the chosen philanthropies of the four grade level classes of NLYM:

The Class of 2015 - Orange County Ronald McDonald HouseThe young men sponsored and staed a water booth at the Ronald McDonald House Walk For Kids on April 12, 2015.

The Class of 2016 - Caterina's Club Anaheim, CAThe young men donated their funds to Caterina's Club which will in turn serve low-income children a nutritionally balanced meal. They also spent an afternoon making a meal to serve to the children.

The Class of 2017 - The Isaiah House The young men purchased toiletries to distribute at the Isaiah House and assisted in serving lunches.

The Class of 2018 - Think TogetherThe young men contributed their funds to purchase cleaning supplies and cleaned books for Think Together’s Early Literacy Program.

The evening was a great success, but would not have been possible without the generosity of The Post at Rockwell's. Thank you also to the Flowery in Villa Park for the beautiful owers and to Outdoor Dimensions for the banners. The music was provided by a group of talented students from the Orange County School of Arts in Santa Ana. A special thank you to the mothers who served on the Fund Development Committee: Patty Brand, Debbi Chao, Cindy Everett, Amiee Howard, Carrie Huber, Kris Jackson, Camela Kay, Jennifer Pickler, Heidi Ruiz, and Nancy Scharber.

Thank you to all who attended and supported this event. Article by: Karen Adnams Inja Chuing Rosie Michel
