BIENNALE 2017 JUDGE SUSAN MAYFIELDThe 25th Biennale judge, Susan Mayfield, is an award-winning artist
known for her use of color and light in pastel and oils. She holds a Fine
Arts degree with honors from the College of Charleston and has further
studied with prominent artists from around the country.
Mayfield has exhibited widely in both solo and group exhibitions and is
represented in both corporate and private collections. Her work also has
the distinction of being selected for the US Department of State's Art in
Embassies Program which curates art exhibitions for US Embassies and
Consulates around the world.
In 2012, along with Stephen Smalzel, Mayfield opened the Smalzel
Mayfield Gallery, a fine art gallery in Salida, Colorado. In addition to her
career as an artist, Mayfield is a noted instructor, teaching art classes in
her studio and leading artist workshops around the country. Art League
of Hilton Head is fortunate to have her here to review and select this
year’s Biennale award winners.
She has served on numerous boards for the advancements of art and
artists, including the Executive Board of the Salida Artists when Salida
was named an Art District in Colorado. She also served on the Board of Friends of Browns Canyon, helping to champion the designation of Browns Canyon as a National Monument, and continues to be an advoate
for utilizing art and artists to bring awareness to saving our nation's
public lands and land trusts.

HILTONHEAD
OF
ART LEAGUE HISTORY AND MISSIONMore than 45 years ago, Art League of Hilton Head was the vision of a man
whose name now graces this gallery. Walter Greer thought Hilton Head Island
was just the place for an artists’ community. Those of us who call this island
home are blessed to have not only the well-preserved natural environment to
draw inspiration from, but also the support of several hundred artists and art
lovers who make up Art League of Hilton Head today.
Art League provides art education throughout the year at its Academy,
offering weekly classes and studio workshops featuring visiting artists. Art
League Gallery, here in Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, provides state-of-
the-art exhibition space for its members, as well as visiting exhibitions.
This event, the Hilton Head Biennale 2017 represents the 25th national
juried exhibition that Art League has presented over the years. Our commit-
ment is to provide a venue for some of the best artists in the country for the
enrichment of both our own artists and that of the entire community.
Art League of Hilton Head is the only 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts organiza-
tion on Hilton Head Island with a synergistic Art Gallery, various satellite
galleries, and a teaching Academy that welcomes artists and students at all
skill levels and in all media. Art League of Hilton Head promotes and supports
the visual arts through education, exhibitions, and partnerships for the
cultural enrichment of the community and its visitors.
