Innovations from NIF database addressing disability issues
Modified walker with adjustable legs
Shalini KumariBihar Shalini’s grandfather uses a walker to assist him while he walks. But she noticed that he could only use the walker comfortably while walking on a level surface. Shalini came up with the idea of the modified walker with adjustable legs. She has also thought of including a folding seat so that the user can rest for a while when required and fitted a horn and a light to it as well. NIF licensed this technology to a company recently

Low cost Braille printer Santosh Singh & Khushwant Rai, 12, Jalandhar, Punjab
Braille printer exists in the market but at a price that an ordinary person cannot afford. For this the innovators have extended the functionalities of dot matrix printer with some modification to make economical printer which cost around Rs 10000/- ( 165 USD) against the market price of about a lakh( 2000 usd).
National Innovation Foundation - India
• The low cost braille printer developed by innovators is a modification of conventional dot matrix printer.
• The dot matrix printers have 9, 18 or 24 pins, which strike over the ink ribbon thus printing letters on a paper
• The paper is supported by a roller when letters are printed on it.
• Innovators have altered the size of the roller and removed the ink ribbon
• Thus the pins strike the paper directly and giving the desired impression.
• This is an extremely affordable innovation for a very noble cause – ‘education for blind’

• Club foot (talipes equinovarus) is a deformity of the foot and ankle in new born, where in the foot of a new born is twisted out of shape or position. Usually CT scans or MRI scans of the clubfeet are required to evaluate the deformities of the clubfoot, which are very expensive for the parents
• Moreover radiations of these scans have a negative effect on the soft skin of new born babies.
• Innovator has developed an economical device, which eliminates the need of any scan without causing any harmful effect on the soft skin of babies.
• Its a manual operated device and requires lesser time as compared to scanning.
