In May 2012, the Sixty-fifth World Health Assembly endorsed the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP) for the “Decade of Vaccines (2011-2020). One of the goals for the Decade of Vaccines is that all the countries reach 90% national coverage with the three doses of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis-containing vaccines (DTP3) by 2015. Achieving high and equitable immunization coverage underpins the progress with all the remaining eradication, elimination and disease control goals.
In this document, you will find the national coverage for DTP 1st dose (DTP1) and 3rd dose (DTP3) by country and WHO region for the year 2014 (the most recent coverage estimates) and also a graph showing DTP3 coverage time series for each country for last 5 years.
The following colour codes are used in the scorecards, based on national DTP3 coverage for 2014: green when coverage is ≥ 90%; orange when coverage is 80 to 89%; and red when coverage is below 80%.
The source of data are the WHO UNICEF Estimates of National Immunization Coverage (WUENIC)1 for 2014.
In 2014, 129 (66%) of the 194 WHO Member States reached the coverage target of ≥ 90% for DTP3 coverage nationally; 119 countries sustained it for the last 3 years (109 for the last 5 years).
In 2014, DTP3 coverage was below 80% for 35 countries (compared to 32 in 2013; 30 in 2011). Among those 35 countries, 27 were already below this threshold in 2013 and 8 were above 80% in 2013 (including 2 for which coverage rate was above 90%). Nineteen Countries never exceeded this 80% threshold since 2010.
Five Countries had DTP3 coverage below 80% in 2013 but succeeded to increase it above this 80% threshold in 2014 (one reached a rate above 90%).
Total number of children who had not received three doses of DTP-containing vaccines in 2014 was estimated to be 18.7 million compared to 18.8 million in 2013 and 19.2 million in 2011.
As the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) observed in its annual GVAP assessment report 2015 2, based on the current level of progress, the immunization coverage targets for the decade of vaccines are unlikely to be met. With transformative and data-driven actions to reach every community, this goal can be achieved and will lead to the eventual elimination and control of vaccine-preventable diseases.
