NERSC View of the Greenbook
Bill SaphirChief ArchitectNERSC Center Division, LBNL6/23/2004
Role of the Greenbook
• Provides the scientific justification for NERSC systems, services, activities
• Provides guidance to NERSC on how to best serve its users
Greenbook Messages
• The Greenbook clearly describes– What science is/can be enabled by High
Performance Computing facilities– The need for large centralized computing
resources
• The Greenbook should also talk about– Non-computational requirements– Infrastructure support– Services– Other activities in support of high performance
computing
Areas of Interest
• User services (training, documentation)• Systems management• Network services• Impact of algorithms on system
requirements• Global shared storage (GUPFS) needs and
expectations• System balance requirements – I/O rates,
interconnect speed, etc.
Areas of Interest (2)
• Algorithmic and discipline collaboration• Visualization systems and services• Grid services• Mass storage • Technology assessment and evaluation
for procurements and strategic planning• Special services• Account and allocation services
The Greenbook Opportunity
• This is your opportunity to let the DOE and NERSC know what you need!
• Today’s meeting kicks off the Greenbook process– We will listen carefully and summarize
what we’ve heard and haven’t heard this afternoon
– Discussion and task assignments following
