If people were passing out paints on the street for free every day, I’m sure there’d be a lot more painters.

I believe museums and
Wikipedia have a lot in
common
(even if Wikipedia’s only been free to the world since 2001!)
![Page 5: National Digital Forum [[edit]] this museum](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081715/546c9e0daf795962298b508f/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
We too have scope creep...
![Page 6: National Digital Forum [[edit]] this museum](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081715/546c9e0daf795962298b508f/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
...we curate exhibitions...
![Page 7: National Digital Forum [[edit]] this museum](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081715/546c9e0daf795962298b508f/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
...and contextualise information...
![Page 8: National Digital Forum [[edit]] this museum](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081715/546c9e0daf795962298b508f/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)

...we “deaccession” articles...
![Page 10: National Digital Forum [[edit]] this museum](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081715/546c9e0daf795962298b508f/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
delete or keep?
![Page 11: National Digital Forum [[edit]] this museum](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081715/546c9e0daf795962298b508f/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
...and we “deaccession” images...
![Page 12: National Digital Forum [[edit]] this museum](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081715/546c9e0daf795962298b508f/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
But we’re only just learning how to “play nicely with others”

one more thing...Q. Why does Wikipedia have lots of educational resources about American culture but comparatively little from other countries (especially Australia/New Zealand)?
(It’s not a language or digital divide problem)
A. 1. US is more available 2. US has greater copyright freedom
![Page 19: National Digital Forum [[edit]] this museum](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081715/546c9e0daf795962298b508f/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)

AMERICAN Institutions:• high resolution (inc .tiff)• nuanced re-use policy• no pseudo-TPMs• default is open (esp. gov’t)
AUSTRALIAN Institutions:• low resolution .jpg format• blanket claim of “personal and private use only”• (water)marking/zoomify etc.• Default is closed (esp. Crown)
