NCHC FACTS AND FIGURES No. 1/1 North Dakota captured the Penrose Cup last Friday with a win at Miami as UND won the 2014-15 NCHC regular-season title, its first NCHC championship of any kind. The title is UND’s 16th conference championship in program history, the most of any NCAA Division I men’s program. North Dakota is the top seed heading into this weekend’s NCHC Tournament. Of the four teams hosting quarterfinal series this weekend, only two hosted last season - top-seeded North Dakota and third-seeded Omaha. Second-seeded Miami and fourth-seeded Denver are hosting a quarterfinal series for the first time in the NCHC Tournament. Last season, only one host team advanced to the Frozen Faceoff (second-seeded North Dakota) as three lower seeds won road series, including sixth-seeded Denver, which went on to defeat eighth-seeded Miami in the inaugural Frozen Faceoff Championship to claim the NCHC Tournament title. Only one NCHC Quarterfinal series this year is a rematch from last season -- Colorado College at North Dakota. Last year it was the 2-7 match-up, while this year it is the 1-8 series. Last year, CC took the series to three games before UND prevailed. Comparing the final NCHC standings to the NCHC Preseason Poll, as voted upon by media, the Preseason Poll was almost exactly correct. The only difference was Omaha and St. Cloud State, which finished in opposite places they were predicted. (page 7) The eight NCHC teams have played the eight toughest schedules in the country this season, led by Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State at No. 1 and 2, respectively. Omaha, Miami, Denver, WMU, CC and UND round out the top eight, respectively, in the KRACH Ratings. Omaha sophomore forward Austin Ortega broke the NCAA single- season record for game-winning goals with his 11th game-winner this season in Saturday’s win over Colorado College. He broke the record of 10 that had been matched seven times, last in 2002 by New Hampshire’s Colin Hemingway. Miami junior forward Sean Kuraly is second in the country with nine game-winners this season. Denver sophomore forward Trevor Moore captured the NCHC conference scoring title with 30 points in 23 conference games. His 13 goals tied for the lead in NCHC play. DU senior defenseman Joey LaLeggia was second with 29 points, which led all blue liners in conference play. Denver freshman forward Danton Heinen took the rookie scoring title with 26 points in 24 NCHC games. Heinen also leads all NCHC players in overall scoring with 42 points. The NCHC leads all conferences with five ranked teams (all in the top 8) in both the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll and the USCHO.com Poll. The NCHC has five teams ranked in the top eight of the PairWise Ratings as of March 11, as well. One NCHC quarterfinal series is a top-10 match-up with No. 6/6 Minnesota Duluth at No. 8/7 Denver. Awarded to the NCHC regular season champion, the Julie

and Spencer Penrose Memorial Cup (right) serves as the league’s crowning achievement. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation also helped pay for the Penrose Cup.

• Following a split at Western Michigan, UMD did something this winter it had done only one other time in 54 years of competing at the NCAA Division I level -- go through an entire regular season without being swept. The Bulldogs also accomplished that feat in 2010-11. North Da-kota was the only other NCHC school to make that claim this season.

• Junior Andy Welinski potted his career-best eighth goal in last Friday’s 6-3 win at Western Michigan. Among NCHC defensemen, Welinski ranks second in goals. The eight-member UMD blueline corps has generated 21 goals this season after scoring just five all last season (all by Welinski).

• Sophomore forward Dominic Toninato posted his third two-goal game of the season (and his career) last Friday at WMU. He leads the Bulldogs in goals with a career-high 16, 12 of which have come on the road.

PrevIouS Week recaPS

fridAy, MArCH 6No. 1/1 NORTH DAKOTA 2, No. 5/5 MIAMI 1

OXFORD, Ohio – In a much-anticipated top-five battle, the game lived up to the hype with No. 1/1 North Dakota holding off No. 5/5 Miami for a 2-1 win Friday night at Steve Cady Arena with the Penrose Cup on the line, clinching the NCHC regular-season cham-pionship outright for UND. With the win, UND extended its winning streak to five games and unbeaten streak to eight games while capturing its 16th conference title in program history, the most in the NCAA. Miami is now tied with Denver in second place though neither has secured home ice for the NCHC Quarterfinals. UND grabbed a 1-0 lead just 2:43 into the game when sophomore defenseman Keaton Thompson scored on a bad-angle shot from below the goal line, banking his shot of the back of Miami junior goalie Jay Williams as it snuck inside the near post. North Dakota outshot Miami, 11-5, in the opening 20 minutes but MU’s penalty kill was successful twice to keep it a one-goal game. UND again scored early in a period when senior forward Con-nor Gaarder made it 2-0 just 1:56 into the second stanza. Freshman forward Austin Poganski carried the puck down the right side in transition and centered to Gaarder, who fired a shot top shelf from the slot. His goal would turn out to be the game-winner, his third straight game scoring the game-winner. At the 7:49 mark of the middle period, Miami closed within one on a power play goal from junior forward Sean Kuraly. Junior forward Riley Barber sent in a shot from above the left circle that was stopped and junior defenseman Matthew Caito had the first chance at the rebound, but UND junior goalie Zane McIntyre saved that too. It took Kuraly’s back-handed rebound to McIntyre’s right to get the puck past him. Miami then picked up the pressure and finished with a 21-11 edge in shots in the second period, but remained down a goal head-ing to the final frame. In the third period, the RedHawks continued to apply pressure and create chances, but McIntyre turned each one aside, stopping 18 shots over the final 20 minutes. Miami pulled Williams for an extra attacker in the final minute but couldn’t find the equalizer as UND hoisted the Penrose Cup. McIntyre led the way with a season-high 43 saves, one shy of his career high, as Miami finished with a 44-27 shots on goal advan-tage. Williams stopped 25 shots in defeat. MU went 1-for-2 on the power play while UND was 0-for-3.

No. 8/7 DENVER 3, ST. CLOUD STATE 2

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Freshman defenseman Adam Plant scored in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and lift No. 8/7 Denver to a 3-2 win over St. Cloud State on Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. With the win, DU moved into a tie for second place in the NCHC with Miami and also secured its 14th straight 20-win season, the longest streak in the NCAA. SCSU is now locked into the No. 6 seed for the upcoming NCHC Tournament. The Huskies started strong, taking advantage of a power play late in the first frame. Freshman defenseman Mika Ilvonen sent a circle-to-circle pass to junior forward Jimmy Murray, who blasted a shot into the open net from the left circle with 2:54 left in the opening period. Despite being doubled up on shots, 22-11, in the second stan-za, Denver grabbed the lead with two goals in the middle period. Senior forward Ty Loney tied the game 9:30 into the frame when he carried the puck all the way up the ice on the left side before cutting to the high slot and sending in a wrister that found the left corner of the net to tie the game. Then with 3:45 left in the period junior forward Gabe Levin put the Pioneers in front when he batted in his own deflection out of midair in front of the net after a feed from sophomore forward Emil Romig. Only 1:34 into the final frame, the Huskies pulled even, again striking on the power play. Junior forward Jonny Brodzinski fed classmate Kalle Kossila in the high slot, where he turned and fired a low line drive that beat freshman goalie Tanner Jaillet five-hole. Just over four minutes later, however, DU regained the lead on a blast

from above the left circle from Plant after sophomore forward Trevor Moore used nifty stick-work to get him the puck. SCSU had a power play chance late in the contest to tie the game but couldn’t convert as Denver held on for the win. Despite the loss, the Huskies held a commanding, 42-24, shots on goal edge, including 12-8 in the final 20 minutes. SCSU was 2-for-4 on the man advantage while killing all three DU power plays. Jaillet compiled a career-high 40 stops to earn the win in goal for Denver while St. Cloud State sophomore netminder Charlie Lindgren had 21 saves in the loss.

COLORADO COLLEGE 2, No. 7/8 OMAHA 2 (OT)CC wins shootout, 1-0, in three rounds

OMAHA, Neb. – Colorado College struck twice in the second period, including tying the game late in the period to earn a 2-2 overtime tie at No. 7/8 Omaha Friday night the CenturyLink Center, while the Tigers went on to win the shootout, 1-0, to earn an extra point in the standings. CC is now unbeaten in its last three games while the Mavericks are winless in their last five games and now sit in fourth place in the NCHC. The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead with a short-handed goal by sophomore forward Justin Parizek 8:31 into the opening frame, the first of his two goals on the night. Freshman defenseman Joel Mess-ner grabbed the puck after a CC turnover in the Tiger end and found sophomore forward Jake Guentzel, who had a 2-on-1 with Parizek and fed him perfectly in front of sophomore goalie Tyler Marble for the score. CC evened things up at 1-1 with a power play goal at the 12:54 mark of the second period when junior forward Peter Maric took a pass from senior defenseman Aaron Harstad in the slot and placed a backhander over the right shoulder of UNO senior goalie Ryan Massa. Fellow senior blue liner Peter Stoykewych also earned an assist on Maric’s fifth goal of the season, all coming in the last five games. Parizek put the Mavericks back in front with 2:39 left in the second stanza with his second goal of the game. Freshman for-ward Tyler Vesel sent a pass that went right across the goal mouth and Parizek beat Marble from the far post on the power play. CC sophomore forward Christian Heil then made a spectacular individual play in the final minute of the period to make it a 2-2 contest. Heil raced down and stole the puck in the Tiger end, took it the length of the ice and, from the left boards, found sophomore forward Matt Hansen streaking in front of net with a perfect pass. Hansen’s first goal of the season tied the game at 2-2 with 26.4 seconds left in the second period. The third period saw the Mavericks push back with a 9-5 edge in shots, but Marble turned them all aside. Massa also came up big for UNO throughout the contest, stoning CC sophomore forward Luc Gerdes on two breakaways and classmate Sam Rothstein on one. Massa also made a big poke-check on Heil as he and Gerdes came in on a 2-on-0 rush with 11:30 left in the third period. With neither team able to score in the final frame the game went to overtime level at 2-2. After a scoreless extra session, the game ended in a 2-2 tie and went to a shootout for the extra point. CC junior forward Cody Bradley led off the shootout with a wrister that beat Massa and it was just enough for CC’s second shootout win in seven tries in the two-year existence of the NCHC as Marble denied all three Maverick shooters for a 1-0 shootout win.

No. 6/6 MINNESOTA DULUTH 6, WESTERN MICHIGAN 3

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In a wild game that saw seven goals in the second period, including five in a span of two minutes, sophomore forward Dominic Toninato added two goals in the third period to help No. 6/6 Minnesota Duluth pull away for a 6-3 win at Western Michigan Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena. With the win, UMD kept its hopes for home ice in the NCHC Quarterfinals alive despite still being in fifth place, the Bulldogs are just two points out of second place. WMU is assured of the No. 7 seed in the NCHC Tournament.

Page 15: National Collegiate Hockey Conference

After an evenly played, scoreless first period, the goals started to come in the seconds stanza, beginning at 4:36 of the period when junior defenseman Willie Corrin struck first for the Bulldogs, giving them a 1-0 lead on a shot from the left point. WMU soph-omore forward Sheldon Dries tied the game up at 1-1 at 7:35 of the second on a power play goal. Junior forward Colton Hargrove found Dries at the right side of the net, where he fired a shot and then punched in his own rebound for his team-best 13th goal of the season. Senior forward Justin Crandall put UMD back on top with a 2-1 lead with 3:42 left in the middle period while on a power play, striking on a blast from the top of the left circle. Sophomore defenseman Willie Raskob faked a shot from the top of the right circle and found Crandall alone as he fired it into an open net. That started a flurry of five goals in two minutes. Only 41 ticks later, junior forward Sam Mellor netted his first goal of the season after he punched in a rebound on a shot by senior defenseman Matt Stewart. Stewart threw a shot on net from the middle of the left circle and UMD rookie goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo made the initial save but Mellor came streaking off the bench and shot the puck past Kaskisuo to tie the game up at 2-2. Only 47 seconds later with 2:14 left in the second stanza, freshman forward Karson Kulhman tapped in a rebound on a shot by sophomore forward Austin Farley to put the Bulldogs back up 3-2. The Bulldogs had a 2-on-1 rush and Farley fired a shot on net. Se-nior goalie Frank Slubowski got a piece of Farley’s shot with his glove but it bounced to his skates and Kuhlman put it in the net. It took WMU just 13 seconds to tie the game again when freshman forward Frederik Tiffels threw the puck into the slot and it was accidently knocked in by a UMD defenseman for his ninth goal of the season. The Bulldogs were not to be denied however as junior defenseman Andy Welinski’s rocket from the top of the right circle broke the tie once more with 1:42 left in the period for the game-winning goal. Midway through the final frame, Toninato scored his first of the game to double UMD’s lead to 5-3. He then tacked on an emp-ty-net goal with .1 seconds left on the clock to push the final score to 6-3. Corrin, Kuhlman and Crandall all had a goal and an assist each while Farley dished out two helpers in the win. UMD finished with a 31-28 edge in shots on goal, while both teams were 1-for-4 on the power play. Kaskisuo compiled 25 saves to earn the win in net while Slubowski also stopped 25 shots.

sAturdAy, MArCH 7No. 5/5 MIAMI 6, No. 1/1 NORTH DAKOTA 3

OXFORD, Ohio - Austin Czarnik’s Senior Night was one to remember as the forward posted four points to lead the No. 5 Miami hockey team to a 6-3 victory over No. 1 North Dakota on Saturday evening at Steve Cady Arena. The victory clinches home ice advantage for the RedHawks (21-12-1, 14-9-1-1 National Collegiate Hockey) in next weekend’s NCHC Playoffs. It also marks the first time they have defeated the No. 1 team in the nation since topping Michigan 4-2 on March 1, 1997. North Dakota (25-7-3, 16-6-2 NCHC) fired seven of the first eight shots on goal of the contest. The RedHawks got the night’s first power play 5:19 into the contest, but they were unable to get set up for an extended period or direct anything in Zane McIntyre’s direction during a scoreless two minutes. First blood was drawn by UND at the 9:31 mark when Luke Johnson finished a backdoor feed from Stephane Pattyn after Gage Ausmus’ shot was deflected and slowed down to Pattyn atop the crease, where he found Johnson to make it a 1-0 North Dakota lead. Miami got another power play shortly thereafter, but was once again stymied with the man advantage as it still trailed entering the latter half of the frame. The RedHawks found their legs as the period wore on and eventually evened the shot count at seven apiece at intermission. Miami finally broke through with 2:45 to go in the frame when Mat-thew Caito wired a shot from the point that Kevin Morris deflected wide off the boards. Czarnik took advantage of the lively carom as

it bounced out at the opposite post and buried his third goal of the year, evening the score at 1-1 after 20 minutes. Miami was put short-handed just 17 seconds into the middle frame, but it was the RedHawks who took advantage of the situa-tion as fore-checking pressure by Czarnik and Sean Kuraly forced a turnover into the slot. Kuraly ripped a shot wide that bounced off the high glass to Czarnik, who again took advantage of the favorable geometry with three seconds remaining on the man advantage, his second of the night putting MU on top 2-1. Smelling blood, Miami crashed the net for a goal 37 seconds later as Blake Coleman won an offensive zone faceoff, Taylor Richart swung the puck around the wall and Anthony Louis centered the puck into the crease where Coleman jammed it home to put Miami ahead 3-1 just 2:51 into the second period. A Miami miscue at the offensive blue line sprung Johnson loose for a breakaway, that he converted on for his second goal of the evening that cut the lead to 3-2 with 14 minutes to go in the middle stanza. UND started to surge from there, outshooting MU 15-9 in the period. The game’s critical point came with 3:40 remaining in the period when Coleman was called for a five minute checking from behind major and a game misconduct, ending his senior night early. North Dakota had a golden opportunity to tie the contest up, but Czarnik forced a turnover at the UND point and skated in for a breakaway. The senior stuck with the play despite being hooked from behind by Paul LaDue and slipped the puck in past McIntyre for his second short-handed goal of the period, extending the Red-Hawks’ lead to 4-2 after two periods of play. That goal completed his first-collegiate hat trick. A late penalty on Miami in the second carried over into the third period, leaving North Dakota with 45 seconds of a 5-on-3 to work with. UND took advantage of the extra numbers as Nick Schmaltz fed his brother Jordan for a one-timer that whistled wide of the left post, but caromed out front to Drake Caggiula at the other end where he finished at the back door to pull North Dakota within 4-3 just 32 seconds into the final frame. The RedHawks managed to answer just 1:12 later when Czarnik won a faceoff cleanly in the offensive zone to Riley Barber, who wired a wrist shot past McIntyre to give the RedHawks a two-goal lead once more at 5-3. Things got a bit heated from there as the teams combined for nine penalties and 29 minutes in the final 17:40. The teams also combined for 25 shots (13-12 Miami), but the Red and White were able to put the contest away when Louis buried an empty net goal by flinging the puck in from his own zone with 9.2 seconds remaining. North Dakota ended up outshooting Miami 34-29 on the eve-ning, marking the first time MU won a game when it allowed more shots on goal than it recorded. Louis’ empty net goal finished the RedHawks’ power play at 1-for-6 on the night while North Dakota finished 1-for-5 with the man advantage. Ryan McKay turned aside 31 of 34 shots to improve to 4-0-1 in his last five starts. McIntyre stopped 23 of the 28 shots he faced from MU. Louis (1g, 1a) also put up a multi-point night for the Red and White. Miami’s victory coupled with Denver’s loss to St. Cloud State means it enters the NCHC Tournament as the No. 2 seed. It will host rival Western Michigan in a best-of-three series, which starts on Fri-day night at 7:35 p.m. UND earned the top seed after winning the Penrose Cup and hosts Colorado College in the NCHC Quarterfinals beginning Friday, March 13 at 7:37 p.m. CT. All NCHC Quarterfinal games will be on NCHC.tv.

No. 7/8 OMAHA 4, COLORADO COLLEGE 2

OMAHA, Neb. - Austin Ortega set an NCAA record for game-win-ning goals on Saturday, helping the No. 7/8 Omaha hockey team lock up third place in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference with a 4-2 win over Colorado College Saturday night at the Centu-ryLink Center. The Mavericks will host St. Cloud State in the first round of the NCHC Playoffs beginning on Friday, March 13. They finished the regular season with a record of 18-10-6 overall and 12-8-4-3 in the NCHC. The third-place finish matches the best in program history.

Omaha had been picked to finish sixth in the preseason media poll. The Mavericks were leading 2-1 in the third period when the Tigers tied the game. Matt Hansen fired home a pass from Hunter Fejes at 7:06. It was his second goal of the season and the week-end. But with just 1:55 remaining in regulation, Ortega made his-tory with his 11th game winner of the year. He walked in down the left wing and wired a shot over the glove hand of goalie Tyler Mar-ble, hitting the top corner for his team-best 18th goal of the season. He broke the record that was held by seven others and last equaled in 2002. Jake Guentzel added an empty net goal, his second goal of the game, with 13 seconds remaining to ice it. Kirk Thompson, who was a surprise starter for the Mavericks after Ryan Massa, who had been scheduled to start, was injured during warm ups, made 24 saves to improve to 5-3-0 on the sea-son. It was his first start since Jan. 16. Marble stopped 31 for Colorado College which finished eighth in the NCHC with a record of 2-19-3-1. The Tigers are 6-24-3 over-all and will face Penrose Cup Champion North Dakota next week. Colorado College broke the scoreless tie at 1:28 of the second period. Aaron Harstad’s shot from the left point hit a skate and ricocheted past Thompson. The Mavericks swarmed the CC net later in the period and the pressure finally paid off at 12:45. Tyler Vesel’s shot from the high slot hit Marble and bounced at the feet of Justin Parizek. Parizek quickly fired it home, his third goal of the weekend and career best 12th of the season. UNO took the lead less than three minutes later. David Pope battled for the rebound of a shot by Ortega in the low slot. His shot bounced to Guentzel who fired home the puck past a sprawling Marble at 15:30.

WESTERN MICHIGAN 3, No. 6/6 MINNESOTA DULUTH 0

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan hockey team sent its senior class off in style after a 3-0 shutout win over No. 6 Minne-sota Duluth in front of a sellout crowd of 3,715 at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night. The Broncos improved to 13-16-5 overall and 6-13-5-4 in the NCHC, while UMD fell to 20-13-3 and 12-9-3-0 in conference play to cap the regular season. Lukas Hafner made 18 saves and the Broncos picked up goals from Chris Dienes, Mike McKee and Justin Kovacs. WMU killed off all four of the Bulldog power plays and converted 1-of-5 of their own. Dienes got the Broncos on the scoreboard at 8:08 in the first period. Colton Hargrove played the puck across the blue line and left it for Nolan LaPorte at the top of the right circle. LaPorte hit Dienes, who was trailing the play, and the sophomore defenseman fired a shot from the right edge of the left circle and into the net for his second goal of the season. McKee pushed the lead to 2-0 at 11:37 in the third period during a five-minute major power play for the Broncos. Scott Mold-enhauer played a perfect pass to spring McKee at the blue line and he skated in and ripped one past UMD goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo for his second of the season. Kovacs added an empty-net goal with 1:13 remaining after Dienes broke up a play and passed it to senior captain Will Kessel at center ice. Kessel had a two-on-one with Kovacs and passed it to him in the slot for the easy tap-in. Seventh-seeded Western Michigan heads to second-seeded Miami for the NCHC Quarterfinals, taking on the RedHawks on Fri-day, Saturday and Sunday if necessary, March 13-15. Friday’s game begins at 7:35 p.m. ET while Saturday’s game is at 7:05 p.m. ET. The Bulldogs are the No. 5 seed and travel to Denver for their quar-terfinal series.

8/7 Denver (20-12-2, 13-10-1-1 NCHC) on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Sixth-seeded St. Cloud State will open tournament play on Friday, March 13 with at the University of Nebraska Omaha. The best of three series will continue at Omaha’s CenturyLink Arena through Sunday, March 15. In the contest against DU, the Huskies broke into the scoring column in the early going of the second period with a pair of mark-ers by Hobey Baker candidate Jonny Brodzinski. He chalked up the game’s first goal at 1:39 of the second period with a solo assist from teammate Nathan Widman. Brodzinski kept the ball rolling with his second tally of the night at 2:12 of the second period. Joey Benik andEthan Prow each had assist on the play. This was Widman’s fifth assist in 2014-15 and it was also Brodzinski’s 34th point. Denver rallied to start the third period as Trevor Moore broke the shutout with a goal at 9:05. The Pioneers narrowed the gap to 3-2 with a goal at 11:53 by Zac Larraza. Denver was hot in the final period as they put 15 shots on net but an empty net goal by Joey Benik dashed the Pioneers’ hopes at 19:06 of the final period. This was Benik’s 13th goal of 2014-15. On the night, Denver outshot the Huskies 37-20. On the power play, SCSU was 0-0 and Denver was 0-2. Denver did not take a penalty in the game. In the second period, Denver was awarded a penalty shot after a delay of game call in the crease by the Huskies.
