2 WINTER 2014

It has been an honor to serve as the Chairman of the National City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for 2014. We have had many accomplishments over the past 12 months that provided advocacy for our members along with promoting the National City business community. We have accomplished the following:

• Established dialogue with the City and other public officials on a range of important issues

• Provided a series of seminars and workshops on topics important to • members and the business community including City’s redevelopment projects, the City’s district sales tax

We are proud to have:• Increased memberships• Administered a successful Green Business Program for the business community to “go green”• Led a successful National City Tourism Marketing District campaign • Successful community events such as the Mariachi Festival & Competition, the Kile Morgan Memorial Golf

Tournament, Automobile Heritage Day Festival & Car Show, the Salute to Navy Luncheon and Job Fair• Continued relationship building with investors coming to National City

We have a lot to be thankful for this year and we hope that 2015 will be grander and more successful with the continued support of the business community.

SincerelyJohn Snyder, 2014 Board Chairman

MESSAGE FROM OUR OUTGOING NATIONAL CITY CHAMBER OF COMMERCEChairman

The mobile app launched in October to add an additional marketing channel to the mix. The app provides direc-tions to all the Hotels and Motels that are in National City, links to TMD’s social media profiles, a list of the 25 things see in the city, and a list of local Restaurants. We have utilized an aggressive online campaign via Google AdWords since July 2014 to drive targeted traffic to the Book Now page. The paid campaign has generated amazing results, helping to generate more than 39,000 visits to the Book Now page. Thanks to this initiative, Hotels and Motels in National City have additional expo-sure in the marketplace, exposure that they wouldn’t have otherwise received. We are working with the San Diego Tourism Authority to monitor tourism industry indicators. Data from our research initiatives are guiding and supporting our marketing plans. These tools emphasize how the travel in-dustry benefits the city’s economy.

November 14, 2014- Governor’s Message

Fresh off four years of painstakingly adjusting public policy to make California more business-friendly, Gov. Jerry Brown is now rolling out the welcome mat to expanding companies with a new set of tools in his recruitment arsenal.

Armed with new tax credits, more funding for economic development, balanced budgets and improved credit ratings, California now competes for jobs and industry without the burden of financial shackles - and the results speak for themselves:

• After years of stagnation, the California economy is growing faster than the national average. The state's economy grew by 2 percent in 2013, better than the US average of 1.8 percent. And after a slow start to 2014, the state's economy grew by 4 percent in the second quarter of the year.• California accounted for 14.2 percent of the country's net employment gain in the second quarter of 2014, as state businesses added 109,800 new jobs.• Nearly 700 California companies made the annual Inc. Magazine ranking of the 5,000 fastest-growing firms in the country - by far the most of any state. California boasts the No. 1 company on the list - Fuhu, the El Se-gundo firm that makes large tablet computers for kids - and four of the top 10.• California boasts the two highest ranking US metro areas in per-capita GDP: San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara ($100,115) and San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward ($78,844).• California added 35,600 construction jobs from Aug. 2013 to Aug. 2014 - the second highest amount in the country. The jump increased construction employment in the state by 5.6 percent.• Existing home sales in California rose by 6.9 percent during the second quarter of 2014.

These performance benchmarks have been set even as Brown, the one-time mayor of Oakland and now three-term governor, continues to remake the California business climate. The capstone of this makeover is the gover-nor's $750-million annual plan to attract and retain business.

After years of experimenting without much success with community development programs, California scrapped them and replaced them with new business tax incentives. The new programs include a tax exemption for R&D in manufacturing and biotech; a job tax credit for increasing the number of full-time workers; and a California Competes tax credit given to companies that relocate or expand in the state.

GREEN NATIONAL CITY CHAMBER OF COMMERCECornerSUSTAINABLE CITY – NATIONAL CITY TEAMS UP WITH SDSU

By Coleen L. GeraghtyThis story is featured in the fall 2014 issue of 360:The Magazine of San Diego State University.

WANTED: Resourceful, forward-thinking city for mutually beneficial partnership. Must be ready for commitment. Apply to San Diego State University.

You won’t find this ad in any classified section, but the relationship it frames is playing out in what could become a prototype for environmentally friendly city plan-ning

National City, San Diego County’s second oldest municipality, has teamed up with SDSU students and faculty to explore ideas for smart, sustainable growth in line with the city’s strategic plan.

It’s all part of the Sage Project, an SDSU initiative enabling students, through their coursework, to tackle real-world projects that improve the quality of life in San Diego.

Project director, Jessica Barlow, modeled SDSU’s program on a successful University of Oregon initiative. The only one of its kind in California, the Sage Project has earned kudos from Environmental Protection Agency of-ficials eager to see it replicated throughout the state and the country.

Last year, marketing and health communication students partnered with National City to develop plans for corner store “conversions” featuring fresh, healthy food; finance students created a long-term property manage-ment plan for the city; and art students designed wayfinding systems from repurposed and recycled materials.

More than 750 SDSU students from 21 classes currently work with the Sage Project in this second year of collaboration with National City. The students are aspiring city planners, climate change scientists, graphic designers, nutritionists and professionals in the child care, real estate and tourism sectors. What they share is an

SDG&E offers tips on avoiding fraud

SDG&E is continuing to alert customers to be aware of an ongoing wire fraud that has been targeting SDG&E residential and business customers. Reports indicate individu-als are misrepresenting themselves as utility employees by calling customers and threatening to turn off electric and gas service if an immediate payment is not made. Customers are instructed to purchase a pre-pay credit/debit card, and are directed to call another phone number where information is then obtained from the card and the cash value is then re-moved.

Please note the following tips:• SDG&E always provides past due notices in writing before service is shut-off for non-payment.• SDG&E does not solicit credit card information• Customers should not provide financial information by telephone unless they initiated the conversation

If you receive a phone call that makes you feel uncomfortable, and you know you have an outstanding balance that needs to be resolved, you should hang up and call SDG&E directly.

FEATURED NATIONAL CITY CHAMBER OF COMMERCEBusinessNAPOLEONE’S PIZZA HOUSE GETS A FACELIFT

NATIONAL CITY — Napoleone’s Pizza House in National City is more than a restaurant where you can eat Italian cuisine. It’s a place where three generations of the same family have created nearly 60 years’ worth of memories with the community.

Since 1958, Napoleone’s has offered students, families and National City police officers a place to sit down and enjoy familiar faces and authentic food.

Today the restaurant is owned and operated by Peter Crivello and thanks to him the establishment’s history is now on the walls — literally. “My regular clients come in and feel like it’s their place, and that’s the same feel-ing that I want to keep going through the years,” he said.

Also on the wall in the banquet room are photos of Sweetwater High School graduates. The alumni have used it since the ’60s for monthly meetings. Lugo will begin painting a mural of Sweetwater High School after the holidays as part of the restaurant’s history.

“We’re on fourth generations of some of the same families that come in,” Crivello said. “When we started out in 1958 it was a big Sweetwater High School hangout after the games — they filled the place.” The city celebrated Napoleone’s 50th anniversary with a proclamation on Nov. 11, 2008.

“Where I ended in the banquet room with the 50th anniversary will probably be it,” Crivello said. “Later I’ll tell the second 50 years, but for now I’m leaving space for the story to continue.” Napoleone’s Pizza House is at 619 National City Blvd.

This project is being conducted in partnership with the City of National City and SDSU course RTM 470 (Global Sustainable Tourism Management) under the instruction of Dr. Vinod Sasidharan. The partnership with SDSU will provide National City with the base-line assessment required to identify future opportunities in sustainable tourism development such as planning and marketing for tourism Corporate Social Responsibility, ecotourism, cultural tourism, and "green" tourism. SDSU students will conduct the assessment and provide the City of National City with a Sustainability GAP Analysis report, which will also identify improvement strategies for the "assessed" establishments. The overall goal through this Sustainability Assessment assignment is long-term, mainly focusing on supporting a strategy, and best practices, for the development of a possible "Green Tourism Corridor" in National City, which might also be of branding interest to the City's TMD.

The Arabo's and Wrigley’s Supermarket Celebrates 35 Years in National City

My family started our grocery store business in Southeast San Diego on November 1st, 1979, and never stopped working. We expanded to National City in 1986, and then Lakeside in 1993. We currently have one location, located at 34 North Euclid Avenue, National City, CA 91950.

Everyone in the Arabo family has been involved at some level of the busi-ness, including all 20 of my cousins, my sister, brothers, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Currently Wrigley’s is owned and operated by the surviving Arabo brothers: Eddie, Amer, and Alan, (R.I.P. Uncle Sam & Grandpa Bob). I am the last remaining 3rd gen-eration family member to be involved in daily operations, and have been for over 25 years. Our Meat Manager Thair aka “Tiger” and Deli Manager Jim have also been with us for over 30 years. About half of our staff has been with us for over a decade, and 100% of our staff consists of local residents.

The best part of working at Wrigley’s being able to make friends and have laughs with customers and staff. What I also personally appreciate is the diversity of our customers. It gives me opportunities to learn about dif-ferent cultures, backgrounds, traditions, and of course their food. Over the years we’ve learned a lot about our customers. One of the most important things we have learned is that our customers want simple things such as: great service, fresh meat and produce, variety of ethnic products at reasonable prices.

Being an independent supermarket makes it difficult to compete with bigger chain stores, but it also has its ad-vantages. Customers have direct contact with us, so if there is a specific product they are looking for, they can speak with us directly. We usually can put in a special order to get it in stock. We value personal relationships with our customers, and know over 60% of our customers on a first name basis, and upwards of 90% by recog-nition.

Every day we give it all we have. It has been 35 wonderful years of hard work, stress, countless hours, tears, sweat everything you can think of, but all well worth it. We are so proud to say over the past 35 years, we have supported hundreds of churches, schools, and various organizations, employed 1,000s of people, and served millions of customers.

Wrigley’s takes a lot of pride in supporting our local communities such as:

• Donations exceeding $12,000 annually to local schools• Hundreds of turkeys donated during Holidays to local residents• Food donation to various local churches• Sponsorships to local youth organizations• 2011 National City Business of The Year• Official Recognition By The National School District

The Port of San Diego, the City of San Diego, and Civic San Diego officially marked the grand opening of the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan Phase 1 in a public celebration held November 15, 2014. The festivities began at noon and culminated in an official ribbon cutting with Congressman Scott Peters, City of San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, City of San Diego Council President Todd Gloria, Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Bob Nelson, Port Commissioner Marshall Merrifield and Civic San Diego Board Chair Cynthia Morgan. National City Port Commissioner Dukie Valderrama supported the project which encompassed an area from the Navy Pier to B Street Pier in San Diego. It also included an area of West Broadway. A 105-foot wide esplanade was created with formal gardens, plazas and shade pavilions. The project included the construction of a new visitor information center, ticket kiosks for bay tour operators and a gift shop/sundries store, as well as a café to open in 2015. The project also included significant improvements to the roadways, utilities and storm water systems, designed with environmental stewardship in mind. The project also includes artwork by Pae White which was seamlessly integrated into the esplanade architecture, blurring the lines between art and architecture.

The Port, the City of San Diego and Civic San Diego all contributed to the $31.1 million project.

SAGE Project in National City

A diverse group of San Diego State students came to Montezuma Hall on Monday to present their proposals on how to improve National City. “Growing up I thought National City was bland, didn’t think much about it and there were lots of negative things I heard about it,” graphic design senior Franco Garcia said.

Garcia was one of about 70 presenters at the Sage Project Symposium, where students had the opportunity to present their research and proposals for ways to counter some of the economic issues and negative perceptions of National City. The Sage Project: Community Engagement for Sustainable Cities Program is a partnership between SDSU and local government in National City where students from 14 classes are given the opportunity to assist the government with partner-directed projects that direct smart growth and sustainability goals. “The purpose was to highlight work that students have been doing all year long and to celebrate our first year doing this since it was our pilot year,” Sage Project Program Director Jessica Barlow said.

The project proposal Garcia worked on outlined plans to create a functional way to find systems using color and graphic elements to delineate the four districts of National City. The proposal suggests using recycled material to place signage across the city directing visitors to each district. Project proposals ranged from merging law enforcements with San Diego County to exploring community interest in creating microbreweries in National City.

Because of its highly urban and low-income community, National City is the city partner for the Sage Project until the 2015-16 academic year. Real estate senior Joey Zaniboni worked on a project to find the best uses of properties to evaluate a long-range plan for property manage-ment. His group proposed certain lots of land be turned into residential areas or a large commercial retail spot, such as an auto industry store.

NewsCity Manager's Message As we approach the end of 2014, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on what has truly been a memorable year for the National City community, one we can all look back on with pride.

Among the most notable events was the voter-approved continuation of Proposition D, National City’s district sales tax. The revenue generated by Proposition D, will ensure that the City’s most vital services-including our Police and Fire Departments, street maintenance, graffiti removal and youth and library services-maintain the high standard of excellence our community has come to expect. In our business community, the Mile of Cars, celebrating its 60th anniversary and more vibrant than ever, is undergo-ing a resurgence, as many dealers complete significant renovations. Our City is also attracting newer businesses like Starbucks and Sonic, which have recently opened new stores.

This month, the city reached a major milestone to convert the former Public Works Yard on Hoover Avenue into a beautiful affordable housing project that will help us meet our housing demands, and serve as a catalyst for future development. We’ve also completed or begun projects that improve the traffic flow on our streets and make them safer for pedestrians and cyclists, including adding bike routes and “flashing cross walks”, and the soon to be completed 8th Street beautification and traffic mitigation project. So here’s to finishing a great year, and beginning another one that promises to be just as eventful.

58th Annual Salute to Navy Luncheon- Wednesday, October 1, 2014

National City’s Salute to Navy was co-founded by ex-Army business-man George Buell, who was manager of the W.T. Grant Department Store in National City. He recognized the long and mutually supportive association. This event would be held in conjunction with the celebra-tion of the United States Navy birthday. He introduced the idea to the National City Chamber of Commerce, which soon thereafter staged the first community-wide “Salute” in October, 1956.

National City’s Salute to Navy is the longest standing Navy tribute in the nation and a local tradition for the past 58 years. With strong ties to San Diego Naval Base, National City holds this event every year during the month of October and jointly celebrates the Navy’s birthday. The honorary guest speaker was Honorable Nathan Fletcher. His per-sonal stories of survival brought strong emotion to the guests who at-tended. There were 150 sailors from different commands in San Diego and 150 community leaders that attended the luncheon. Guests enjoyed a diverse menu including Southern food from Wrigley’s Supermarket, traditional Mexican food from La Original Casa Del Taco, Lebanese cuisine from Ethnic Deli & Café, and Filipino style food from Tita’s Kitchenette.

Candidates' Round Table - Thursday, October 23, 2014

The guest speak-ers at the breakfast were City of National City Mayoral Candidates, City of National City Council Candidates and National School District Candidates.
