PROGRAMME INFORMATION On this programme students explore ways in which a support worker can work in collaboration with consumers/tāngata whai ora who have diverse backgrounds in health care needs. This programme consists of five compulsory modules and four optional modules. To achieve this qualification 105 credits need to be gained in total. Compulsory modules include the following: Building Relationships Establish and maintain supportive relationships with consumers/ tangata whai ora. Rights and Responsibilities Legislation, safety and te Tiriti, in relation to mental health and addiction support work services. Mental Health Realities Understanding mental health and addiction issues across the lifespan and interventions and treatments that contribute to recovery. Interventions in Partnership Describe aspects of working with families and whanau in mental health support work; clarify the relationship with the family or whanau ofa consumer/tangata whai ora; and to provide the family or whanau with information and education. Wellbeing Understand the factors, interventions, models and support to maintain wellness. furtHer study oPtionsGraduates of this programme can apply to enrol in the Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing Māori, Bachelor of Nursing Pacific, the Diploma in Enrolled Nursing or the Diploma in Mental Health (Mental Health Support Work) at Whitireia.
Career oPPortunitiesGraduates from this programme will have the knowledge and skills to be support workers in mental health care, in the community or in mental health facilities. This qualification is not designed to qualify people to be clinical mental health practitioners.
