Lynn was born at the Boeing plant, as were all of the aircraft making up the National 727 fleet. Her first flight was noted in the logbook as taking place on July 12, 1966. Following the check-out and FAA cer-tification, she was delivered to National in Miami on July 23rd, just 11 days after going through the hoops at Boeing and being certified by the FAA.

Lynn has quite a sale and trade history, and according to the NTSB, just a few incidents:

Accident/Incident Occurred on: 1978-03-10Narrative: ENGINE SHUT DOWN DUE TO OIL LOSS. CAUSE FOUND TO BE A CRACKED OIL LINE.

And, a more serious incident after she was sold, and probably leased out, to another carrier:

Accident Occurred on: 1984-05-24WHILE CLIMBING THRU FL 240, THE AIRCREW NOTED THAT THE #1 ENG FIRE

Due to the mask enforcement an-nounced in January, it appears this man-date will run till the end of April. Since our Convention was slated to begin on May 14, my thinking is to move the dates one last time. Having just spoken with the Embassy Suites in Boca we have elected to resched-ule the Convention for October15-16-17. I am hopeful that by then all Covid restric-tions will have been terminated.

I am deeply sorry for this change, but as Stan and I have stated all along, we want everyone attending to feel comfortable be-ing there. As before, the hotel has advised me that all of your previous reservations will be moved over to the new dates, so there is nothing you need to do if you already have made them.

Our go-to gal, Carolyn, has still not been recalled. When she is, I will advise you all. If you are planning to attend and have not yet made your reservations, I would hold off until after June 1 when, hopefully, she will be back to work.

WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THEY SECURED THE ENG IN AC-CORDANCE WITH THE ENG FIRE CHECKLIST PROCEDURE, THEN DIVERTED FOR AN UNSCHED-ULED LANDING AT MIAMI, FL. AN INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE STARTER VALVE, PN 392688-1, HAD STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION. THE AIRCREW DID NOT RECOGNIZE THIS PROBLEM DURING THE STARTING SEQUENCE; THEREFORE, HOT BLEED AIR CONTINUED INTO THE

STARTER SYS. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE STARTER DISINTEGRATED & DAMAGED WIRING & FUEL & OIL LINES, THEN A FIRE STARTED.

Lynn was sold to Pan Am as part of the January 1980 merger. Once painted in Pan Am blue and white, the name Lynn was re-

moved as she joined the PAA fleet as Clipper Sportsman. Again, it would be interesting to how the “Big Blue Ball” came up with these names.

Pan Am did not keep the -35 National aircraft for very long, and soon Clipper Sportsman was sold and repainted in the Air 1 livery. Lynn (Clipper Sportsman), in the remainder of her life, carried other registrations as she was leased and sold. She spent most of the remainder of her flying in South America as a freighter.

Other serials included HK-3933X with ACES Aerolineas Centrales de Colombia, Air 1, Gulf Air Trnsprt, & Trans Ocean Awys, YV-838C with AVENSA Aerovias Venezolanas SA, and also XA-RAN with TAESA Transportes Aereos Ejectivos SA. She wore FN 20 with National Als and was stored at BOG (Bogota) after 2000 as YV-838C.

Lynn was never brought back home once her flying days were over. From all of the information I could find, she was flown to Bogota and she was stored there before being broken up and sold for parts.

Gone but not forgotten

Captain Bobby W. Huggins NAL/PAA/DAL DOB Jan. 6, 1939 • DOH Jan. 3, 1967 • DOD Jan. 23, 2021

On January 23, 2021, Bobby Wayne Huggins lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. Bob was born in Denton, Texas, and attended the University of North Texas. Upon graduation, Bob was accepted into Naval flight training in Pensacola. He com-pleted five years active duty in the Navy and 15 years in the Naval Reserve, retiring as a Commander. After Bob completed his active duty, he began his airline career with National Airlines in Miami. He went on to fly with Pan Am and Delta Airlines, retiring in 1999.

During his flight training in Coronado, California, Bob met his future wife, Billie McWilliams. They were married in 1963 and lived in Hollywood, Florida, for 25 years where they raised two sons. Later they moved to Salt Lake City and in 2005 to Billie’s hometown, St. Simons, Georgia. In retirement, Bob competed in triathlons, volunteered as a tax con-sultant for senior citizens, and became a Wednesday-Lunch-Group regular.

The Buccaneers Need a Little Help by Stan Barfield

Over many years the NAL Buccaneers club has held our dues down to an absolute minimum. For the last couple of reunions, fees were set to barely cover costs and on occasion, there have been additional unexpected costs we paid for from the treasury. Keeping dues down and reunion costs low was a conscious effort to prevent residual funds when the Club closes. This being said, with the final reunion only a few months away, and our desire to put on a memorable bash, we are low on cash and need a lit-tle help. We don’t want to raise fees for the reunion which could adversely affect turnout, so we are asking any of you who are able, to send in a donation. We are not going to set any specific amount.
