1. Introduction:
1.1. Quality Management Trainings for Safe Blood Transfusion
Blood safety has been identified as one of the seven priority areas of WHO and quality
management has been identified as one of the most significant initiative to improve blood safety.
WHO conducts trainings on Quality Management globally through its Quality Management Project
(QMP). The National Blood Transfusion Programme is conducting a series of 3-day National
Training Workshops on Quality Management in 5 different cities, supported by the WHO/OFID
Joint Project “Prevention of Transfusion- Transmitted HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis Infections in
Priority Countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan). The trainings utilize the WHO
Quality Management Training Material and deal with theoretical and practical aspects of quality
management in blood banking. The 15 Day QMT Material has been condensed by the National
Blood Transfusion Programme to a 3-day programme for the target group of blood bank staff.
The training objective is to increase the participant level of understanding of the quality systems in
a blood bank. The participants include Blood Bank Managers, Medical Technologists or Senior
Laboratory Technicians, from public and private sector, who are involved in quality management
aspects of a blood bank. A team of facilitators have been identified by the NBTP and the WHO for
conducting the 5 training workshops. These experts include experienced Blood Transfusion and
Management Experts serving in the public and private sector all over the country.
1.2. Objectives of Workshops
The objectives of the workshops are:
• Development of human capital for future needs of the Safe Blood Transfusion Project in
Regional Blood Transfusion Centres and the attached Hospital Based Blood Banks.
• To improve the skills and knowledge of the Technical Staff of the target Blood Banks.
• Standardization in the Blood Transfusion Process.
• Introduction of Quality Systems in Blood Banks & Hospitals of remote areas.
