Moment of Grace and Opportunity.” In 2010 NRVC hosted a

Vocation symposium titled Moving Forward in Hope with the goal of

developing a National Plan for Religious Vocations. Participants of this

gathering reflected the entire church spectrum. While NRVC is now

Workshop Descriptions

1. “TO BE NEAR GOD IS MY HAPPINESS”: DISCERNMENT, FORMATION AND THE

CONTEMPLATIVE LIFE— Isaac Slater, OCSO What distinctive challenges and insights does the contemplative life offer people today? What are some elements of a monastic approach to discernment and formation and how might they be applied to religious life in general? While a cloistered life in silence seems full of constraints, the practices of monastic life are best understood as means to cultivate and stay faithful to one’s deepest heart’s desire.

Rev. Isaac (John) Slater, originally from Markham Ont., has been a Trappist monk at the Abbey of the Genesee, near Rochester NY, for the last 14 years. He currently serves as prior and infirmarian. He recently completed an STL from the Catholic University of America. He has published a collection of poems (Surpassing Pleasure), a co-translation (The Tangled Braid: Ninety-Nine Poems by Hafiz of Shiraz), along with articles in the field of monastic studies. A book on Bernard of Clairvaux is forthcoming.

2. “CHALLENGES TO COMMUNITIES: DIVERSITY AND GENERATION GAPS”—

Anne M. Walsh We take it almost as a platitude that our civic and religious communities are becoming more and more diverse, in ethnicity, in ecclesiology, in religious experience, and in the generations that comprise these communities. In this session, the participants will explore their experience of diversity, and how—with dialogue and respect-- diversity can be celebrated and truly become a means of enrichment for and within community.

Anne Walsh is the Director for Adult Faith Formation for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. John's, where she also serves as the Executive Assistant to the Archbishop. She has presented or facilitated workshops and courses in every province of Canada and Nunavut, Ireland, England, Italy and in several states of the USA. Anne was born in St. John’s, received a Bachelor of Arts (Education) from Memorial University and began her adult life as a classroom Teacher in the Newfoundland school system, first in Goose Bay and then in Plate Cove and King’s Cove in Bonavista Bay. She received a Master of Religious Education degree and a Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies from St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto, and a Diploma in Fine Arts from the University of Calgary. In addition to her first vocation as a teacher, Anne has worked as a School Board-based Program Coordinator in Religious Education and Family Life. She has worked in university chaplaincy in Toronto, as youth ministry resource person with the Redemptorists and the Canadian Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies program, and as a parish pastoral worker in Sudbury, Ontario. She has served as Diocesan Director of Catechetics for the Diocese of Grand Falls in Newfoundland, and since 2008 has served as Director of Adult Faith formation and Executive Assistant to the Archbishop in St. John’s. Since 2001, she has been an advisor to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops on issues relating to Adult Faith Education. She was the principal author for On Good Soil, the 2011 Canadian Bishops’ document on pastoral planning for evangelization and catechesis with adults. She is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Ministry Degree at St. Stephen's College, University of Alberta. Anne is a Lay Missionary of the Most Holy Redeemer, and the Co-Chair of the Commission for Partnership in Mission of the Edmonton-Toronto Province of the Redemptorists. She serves on the executive of the Association for Canadian Catholic Adult Faith Formation, and is a member of the Vocations Committee for the Archdiocese of St. John’s.

3. “HEARING THE ONE VOICE: CIRCLES OF DISCERNMENT IN EXPLORING

VOCATIONS”—Brenda Peddigrew, RSM In this one-and-a-half hour workshop, Brenda Peddigrew, RSM (NL) will frame the work of how Vocation Directors discern with a candidate, community members, and Leadership Teams whether an individual “is a match” for the community. How to call for, establish, facilitate and participate in a Circle of Discernment is the focus of this workshop. Brenda Peddigrew has been a Sister of Mercy of Newfoundland for 46 years. The earliest parts of her ministry included being a high school teacher, Vocation Director, Director of Adult Faith Development for the Archdiocese of St. John's, and spiritual direction. For the past 23 years she has lived in Ontario and travelled to facilitate Chapters, Assemblies and Retreats internationally. Presently, Brenda lives in the Algonquin Highlands, ON, where she treasures the abiding presence of nature in all seasons, and loves to kayak, bike, ski and snowshoe. She is the writer of five books, three of poetry, one of nature essays, and Original Fire: the Hidden Heart of Religious Women, which was written from her doctoral thesis in transformative learning.

4. “EVANGELIZATION AND CATECHESIS WITH AND AMONG ADULTS”—ANNE M.

WALSH We hear so much today about “The New Evangelization.” What does this really mean? What is “evangelization?” and how do we catechize adults in this time and place? What catechetical needs are we discerning among the candidates who present themselves for formation with religious institutes and those who present themselves as associates or affiliates? In this session, participants will enter into a dialogue and exploration of these

other, related questions. Although most vocation ministers see the value of intra-congregational awareness and collaboration as essential to contemporary vocation ministry, how to do it well requires both skills and a common commitment to its goals. This workshop will outline the practical requirements necessary for religious congregations to work well together in successfully promoting religious life and in discerning with prospective candidates.

5. “GOOD TIMING”: THE INVITATIONS AND CHALLENGES OF VOCATION AND

FORMATION MINISTRY WITH MATURE CANDIDATES IN RELIGIOUS

COMMUNITIES—MARY ROWELL, CSJ AND RAY DOUZIECH, CSSR This presentation will explore the gifts, invitations and challenges of vocation and formation ministry with mature candidates in religious communities. How is such call experienced in today’s world? What are the joys and struggles encountered by mature candidates? How are we to understand the concept of “formation” with respect to mature men and women discerning religious life? What are “best practices” in such formation ministry? How do communities meet the invitation and challenges of generational and experiential differences and how do we receive and share mutual gifts in the process? The workshop will include the “voices” of mature candidates, presentation of key factors to be taken into account in ministry, practical proposals and opportunity for discussion and sharing of experience and practice.

Mary Rowell is a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada and the Vocation Director for the Congregation. Mary is also responsible for the initial formation of candidates. Additionally, Sr. Mary teaches theology at St. Michael’s and Regis Colleges at the University of Toronto and at Sacred Heart College in Peterborough. She also does retreat and spiritual direction ministry at Villa St. Joseph Retreat Centre in Cobourg, Ontario and works with other members of her community at the Centre and in parishes in their various ecological programmes.

Ray Douziech was involved in ministry in the Edmonton region for over 30 years. During this time he was active in the field of formation and education. He worked for 5 years with Edmonton Catholic Schools as a counselor and teacher. He also worked at Newman Theological College, the University of Seattle, the University of Alberta and St Stephen’s Theological College as an adjunct professor. For 15 years he was the director of the Redemptorist Centre for Growth and did assessments for candidates to the priesthood and religious life. He also served as a formator for postulants and a member of the Redemptorist Formation Secretariat of his province. For nine years he worked with the General Government of the Redemptorists in Rome and for six of those years served on the General Secretariat for Formation for the Congregation. At present he is the assistant novice director for the International Novitiate of the Redemptorists of North America.

6. “JOURNEYING TOGETHER AND LIVING AS ASSOCIATES TODAY”— ANN

GOTFRYD AND PEG MADIGAN

Inspired by the mutually supportive and spiritually rich relationship between Naomi and Ruth we will journey together with scripture in order to deepen our awareness of the gifts we offer, the struggles we face, and the opportunities we can create as we dare to dream a new vision for the future. Ann Gotfryd, B.A., M.Ed Following her retirement from Catholic Education in Toronto, where she worked as a librarian, classroom teacher and high school Vice-Principal, Ann has served since 2008 as co-coordinator of Associate Relationship with the Congregation de Notre Dame, in the Central Region of Visitation Province, Canada. This September she became one of two CND Associates now responsible for the Mission of the Central Office of Associate Relationship at the CND motherhouse in Montreal. Alone and together with Peg Madigan, Ann has led sessions, days of reflection and weekend retreats for CND sisters and associates across Canada; at the North American Conference of Associates and Religious in St Louis; and with the first collective gathering of associate groups from 3 religious communities in St John’s Newfoundland. Ann is an avid photographer, an occasional poet and most recently a novice bookbinder. Peg Madigan has been an Associate of the Congregation de Notre Dame of Montreal for the past 32 years. During several of those years her ministry was to work as a coordinator for Associate Relationship. Eleven years ago Peg co-founded the Atlantic Religious Conference of Associate Networking (ARCAN) which continues to grow. Presently she is a board member of the North American Conference of Associates & Religious (NACAR). For the past three years Peg and her husband have worked at one of their congregational centres, St. Joseph Renewal Centre, in Mabou, Nova Scotia, offering days of reflection spiritual direction and developing programs in adult faith development.

Toby Collins is a Kitchener native. He was born in Stratford and went to grade school in St. Catharines (due to his father's job) but the rest of his life has been lived in Kitchener with most of his extended family. He is the third eldest of seven children. While growing up both of his parents instilled in him some strong family values. His mom being the warm and loving presence that was always there to take care for the family while his father worked as a bank manager to pay the bills and get weekends off to spend quality time with his family. They were his first teachers in the ways of the faith - teaching mostly by their example. He attended St. Jerome's High School for two years. After it closed down he moved across the street to St. Mary's to complete his diploma. Then he went onto getting a B.A. in Geography and Philosophy at Wilfred Laurier University. After working in the insurance business and as the owner of Tidy Toby Landscaping he began to surrender to the intensifying call he had to become a priest. He met and loved the Resurrectionists at St. Louis Parish mostly because they were a real, inspiring, and a group of men who lived in community. They helped him to get a Masters of Divinity degree as he graduated from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri in 2006. That same year he professed perpetual vows as a Resurrectionist and one year later, at the age of 32, he was ordained to the priesthood. He has ministered in Louisville, KY, Bermuda, Hamilton, and Waterloo. And he remains grateful for the many ways God has been at work through his vocation. He is entering his second year as Vocation Director for his community - The Congregation of the Resurrection.

8. “AN INNOVATIVE JOURNEY FOR YOUNG ADULTS: DUC IN ALTUM – A YEAR

FOR YOUR FUTURE!”—FRANCINE GUILMETTE Many young adults ask in one way or another, “What am I doing with my life? How can I discern? How do I keep God at the center of my life decisions? How can I respond to God’s call to happiness?” This workshop will introduce you to a unique program in North America called “Duc in Altum – A Year for Your Future”. Learn about the objectives, elements, methodology, spirituality, topics and activities interwoven together, as well as the leadership structure needed to support a journey of discernment in an environment opened to all vocations. This workshop will include a comprehensive program presentation, enriched by witness talks from past “Ducers”.

Sister Francine is a Salesian Sister of St. John Bosco who has a rich experience in youth ministry, including teaching and pastoral animation in various Catholic Schools in the USA and in Canada. For 10 years, she coordinated the youth strategies and programs in synergy with a large parish in the diocese of Montreal. This lead to sharing her gifts, energies and talents at the level of Diocesan youth ministry, with a focus on leadership training, parish youth leader training and World Youth Day delegations. One of the highlights in her ministry was definitely the two years she dedicated to World Youth Day 2002 in Toronto as the Associate Director. She has given numerous youth ministry leadership training across Canada both in French and in English. In 2005, with a team of Salesian sisters and youth adults, she developed a unique vocation culture journey for young adults, called Duc in Altum – A Year for Your Future. She is currently the youth coordinator for the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall and Duc in Altum Coordinator for Canada.
