Small Talk National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts Region N2, Summer 2019 http://nameregionn2.org From Your Regional Coordinator What a beautiful, lush Spring we’re having. Maybe there is an upside to the long winter? So I’m preparing a list of what needs to be done mini wise (otherwise, I’m moving and what a nasty job it has been to empty my house for the sale). YIKES!!! So, what’s going on in N2? Coming up is a Downsizing Sale at Peg’s Dollhouse in Santa Rosa. Other vendors will be there too. See the ad. Then we have the Lodi Shows on June 22nd. See the ad. Lots of great dealers to buy from. In August will be the Summer at Tahoe Zen Garden workshop on August 3rd. See the ad for that. Moving on to NAME Day on or around October 5th, followed by the Good Sam show on October 12 & 13. Sounds like a busy rest of the year in our region. Now, how about NAME events? Coming up in a couple of days of this writing is the Online Houseparty. Let us know if you enjoyed it. July 18-21 is the NAME National Convention in Nashville, September 27-29 the Small Scales Houseparty in Pittsburgh, PA and then April 3-5, “Come Fly With Me,” a Houseparty in Portland, OR, right here on the west coast. Remember that our region is always looking for donations for grab bags. It is the way we make money for our regional expenses, which are not huge but we do have a few and every little bit helps. I hope to see you at some of these upcoming events and sure hope I’ll be resettled soon (that is if you can ever call me settled In the first place). Barbara Thornton-Hill, Temporary Regional Coordinator, Region N2 Here & There With Barbara & NAME Well, as I said last time, I’ve not been doing much in the way of traveling since the last newsletter. I’ve been downsizing and packing up. Finally got my house on the market so feel freer now. I do plan to be on the road again soon to get to other mini events. Thank heavens for the Online Houseparty in a couple of days because I can just stay in my “jammies” and do it at home. I will be back with adventures in the next issue. Enjoy this beautiful Spring and keep cool this summer. Barbara Thornton-Hill Thanks from Liz Driver I am writing this to THANK all the wonderful people who donated to the fundraisers for the ones who suffered a loss in the Camp Fire in Paradise. I was one of those who lost everything. It was a very hard time to go through. My husband and I are in our middle seven- ties. To have to start over at this time in our lives was rough. Thanks to all the great friends I have met and became friends with over the past 35 plus years that I have been a member of NAME and in the club. I cannot express how I felt when I received the cards that was sent and the workshops put on to help raise money. The list is too long to send everyone a personal thank you, so I am writing this to be put in the N-2 Newsletter. With the help I received from you all I will be able to get some of the items I have been putting off getting for the house, and I will be able to replace some of the miniature tools I lost. I really miss my 4” table saw and my chopper. Now I can get them. We are now living in Washington State to be near out son and family. I have joined the local miniature club. Again I want to give everyone a GREAT BIG HUG and say I love everyone of you so much. Mini Hugs, Liz Driver

Small TalkNAME Day 2019: The Craft TableBe sure to order your kits for the “Dream Craft Room.” This year is the Crafting table. Check out the Cutter list on the NAME website under “Events” then “NAME Day.” Some cutters will have other accessories available to go with the table.

Is your craft table able to fit just you or do you have friends who come over and you all work around your craft table? Our 2019 Craft table comes in two sizes. One has a 5” x 5” top to fit you and a friend or two to work at the same time OR you might just want a smaller single table to fit up against the wall. It also has several shelves with cubby holes where you can store (stash) things so you know where they are when you need them.

We cannot wait to see how you build your dream craft room and guess what the best part of it is…you can leave it clut-tered, or you can keep it tidy.

My Craft Table by BarbaraThis is what I’ve come up with for my own 1" Craft Table. First I purchased a large top to go over two bases so I have a 5 x 5 table and it is fine for more than one person to work at if I want to have a friend over. I can’t decide which craft to use it for? Sewing? Minis? Scrapbooking? Other ideas? Maybe my room will have this big one in the middle and a half one against a wall; then I can do more and store more “stuff.”

Of course, I’ll have to leave room for next year’s NAME Day project which will be storage with a sink because how great is that to actually have a sink in your workroom! Wish I had it in real life. This table in 1" measures 5" x 5" for the table top and is 3" high. If you want the single craft table, measurements would be 2-1/2" x 5" and 3" high. It is de-signed to be standing to work on it or sitting in a tall chair or stool.Measurements for 1:24 scale: 1-1/4" x 2-1/2" top and 1-1/2" high or for double table 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" top and 1-1/2" high Measurements for 1:48 scale: 5/8" x 1-1/4" top and ¾" high or for double table 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" top and ¾" high. Watch Small Talk, the Gazette and the NAME website for further information on Cutters and local events to be listed

Our Little Mini Club: The Club is still meeting once a month at the two Chico members’ homes and plans on keeping Our Little Mini Club active.

Once again we wish to show our grati-tude for all your kindness.

Our Little Mini Club Chico/Paradise wishes to thank the “Miniature World,” who opened their hearts by having fundraisers, workshops and donations after six members lost their homes in the Camp Fire/Paradise wildfire on November 8, 2018. On March 19, 2019, we received gift cards, notes and greeting cards from NAME members and non-members. Words cannot express our gratitude for the support, generosity a and kindness of friends and strangers.

Your thoughtfulness will always be re-membered!

Itty Bitties: The expression, “Time flies when you are having fun,” has been around for ages and since we all love to have fun, I asked Father Time if he could extend our time when working with miniatures. Never heard back from him so don’t know if that is good or bad. Dang it!

Our club has been “having fun” work-ing on our 2019 cellar/laundry project. We started working on our 2019 project in Feb-ruary, as in January we did the last project for our 2018 project. Everyone has differ-ent ideas for the cellar. Some will put it a

“book,” some in laundry soap boxes, some in other containers or room boxes. Debra Taylor was quick to provide each of us with a single hanging light bulb for lighting in our project. She also taught us how to con-nect it to a 9-volt battery. Darwin shared the bookcase for the Robin Betterley books.

Since the passing of Jim Cooper, we were wondering if the Flea Market in Beni-cia would still be held and it was. Several of the club members decided to go.

In February we met at Francis Bigler’s house again. Francis taught us all how to make a push broom for our cellar.

In March several club members attended the Benicia Flea Market and we enjoyed the day! Renate has a friend who had miniatures to share with everyone as she is in her 80s with cancer and needed to downsize.

In April Renate taught everyone how to make a hot water heater from a PVC pipe, from straws for pipes, from a picture of Emergency Instructions from her own hot water heater, a button, a spigot, and small jewelry wires. Paul (Karen Sandvick’s hus-band) cut the PVC pipe and Deb Laue cut the round disks for the top and bottom of the hot water heaters. Renate brought more miniatures from her friend for everyone to go through. Karen told us about the Alder-fer Miniature Auction in case anyone want-ed to bid on something.

We all are looking forward to the side-walk sale at Elegant Dollhouse. Some of our club members will be selling there. Busy, busy, busy!

—Renate Winter

Quarter Persuasion: This year our club is making an attic in 1/4 scale. Barbara Thorn-ton-Hill cut the kits for us. A cute attic with a dormer window. So far, we have made a memory table and broke a leg on it so it could be discarded in the attic. At the April meet-ing, we started putting the attic together. It will probably take another meeting to finish it. Then we will be making all sorts of things to put in it. Another fun project to do.

—Pattie Hong

Fresno Tinker Belles: The Fresno club is pleased that we have two new members. Margaret Gordus lost her home in the Para-dise fire and moved to Clovis and came to club yesterday. Glendon Davis has been saving tools that belonged to Molly Lawler and is donating them to Margaret.

Also, my daughter, Wendy Biddy, has been attending club since January and is now a NAME member.

We have all decided that we would like to do the new minikitz offered by Robin Betterley. We will do this as a club project and all are looking forward to it.

Sunday, May 6, we will be attending the parking lot sale in Sacramento.

Think we will all have plenty of mini work to take us through the hot summer.

Through the Looking Glass: Through the Looking Glass has begun work on a new Club Project. We started with the idea of a shed and each member is bringing her own interpretation of studio, potting shed, tea room, artist’s retreat, just a place to read and relax. We are using a variety of small buildings. This will probably be a two-year project! In addition we are working with the Mini-Cals on our NAME Workday in early Oc-tober.Much to do and much fun!!

Redwood Small World: It’s unusually cool out this afternoon. A hot cup of choco-late and a fire in the fireplace sounds just about right. After a full day of friends and fun at a mini workshop, relaxing sounds good too.

Yesterday was our annual “Play Day” event. Lucy and Dick Hanson of Cascade Miniatures of Grants Pass, Oregon gave us a terrific day of creating a lake front cot-tage. They provided us with a one-inch scale, electrified room box with a win-dow wall over looking a landscape of our choice. Beautiful calendar pictures were used for a scenic background, enhanced by special lighting. They also provided kits for a fireplace, bookcases, and a pair of up-

holstered chairs. The fireplace can also be electrified with an LED flickering bulb. It’s very cozy looking.

Lucy and Dick are fantastic teachers with wonderful giving personalities. They gave every class member gifts from their shop and valuable tips on many areas of minia-ture art. We all thoroughly enjoyed them. We are already thinking and planning for next year’s project.

A group of 13 of us attended the work-shop. Several new women joined the day, including a mother and her two young daughters, seven and eight year olds. They were delightful.

We have a new miniature club in our area. The Hobbit Habitats of Humboldt is officially now a NAME club. President BeaJ Fitzpatrick has started the club for smaller scales. They meet once a month and are creating hobbit houses in 1/2 inch scale.

The next couple of months we will be concentrating on our Humboldt County fair exhibits. We all have projects to finish and put the finishing touches on. Our members try to enter as many entries as possible to encourage the growth of our passion. We are working with the fair board to increase classes and divisions, especially for smaller scales and youth. With miniatures shows coming up in other communities and all the fair activity, we will be busy having a great time. Hope you are too! —Sharon Ocheltree

Wee Housers of the Peninsula: The Wee Housers club is happy to have a new mem-ber, Rhona Lee, who lives in Gilroy. She is a very talented addition to our group.

We celebrated our birthdays in April. We met at Rhona’s home for a wonderful lunch that she prepared. And we celebrated again in May for those who couldn’t attend in April. Rhona brought a sampling of the foods she served in April. Each of us brought a gift for everyone. It was lots of fun and we received some wonderful gifts.

2019 Small Scales HousepartyPittsburgh, Pennsylvania

All About the Neighborhood By Ann Pennypacker and Patricia Diefenbach

Neighborhood. What does that evoke in your mind? Maybe it’s the neighborhood market where you see your friends and you stop to chat for a bit. Block parties, dinner parties and picnics are all natural invites for the neighbors. Maybe it’s your favorite fantasy neighborhood from books or television. Maybe it’s a neighborhood of make believe from your child-hood. We all have our version of the ideal neighborhood.

When I think about neighborhoods I think about a community of people who all live and work around each other. We care about each other and perhaps all cheer for the same team. Neighbors will head to the park to hear the school band play. Neighbors sit on the front porch visiting and decorate their yards for the holidays.

I think of miniaturists as a community. When we choose a seat in a workshop we have a neighbor. We are considerate of our neighbors and help each other out. Neighbors borrow tools from each other but make sure to give them right back- because that’s what neighbors do. When we have our meals we sit in a neighborhood table of ten and we all like the same team we call “scales”. At our table we laugh and catch up on happenings, share gifts and contact info so we can continue our friendship. We enjoy our House Parties because it’s like a neighborhood block party. Neighbors may come and go but they are still our friends and will always be part of the neighborhood.

The steering committee and I invite you to join us for All About the Neighborhood Small Scale House Party, hosted by NAME Region M-1, on September 26 to the 29th, 2019 at the Hyatt Airport Hotel in Pittsburgh, PA .

We will offer Pre-Convention and Registered Workshops. The Thursday Night Project will be an opportunity to get to-gether to enjoy snacks, friendship and fun while building our project. The TNP will feature exclusive prizes and special gifts you won’t want to miss!

There will be Door Prizes and House Party Helpers to win. Mini Exchanges and Tote Bags Favors will add to the fun. Be sure to stop by the Hospitality Room to see the Pittsburgh pirate’s treasure chest. There will be games to play (make sure to bring the save the date card), Theme Luncheons, Round Tables and of course the Sales room!

Are you downsizing your collection or stash? Please consider donating Door Prizes which are items valued between $10 and $50 or a Houseparty Helper which are items valued at $150 or more. Door Prize Chair is Rosemarie Mul-lineaux at [email protected] and Houseparty Helper Chair is Donna Brewington at [email protected]. Hope to see you there, Neighbor!

DO YOU WANT TO PROMOTE A MINI EVENT? Submit an event in the N2 Region’s website. It will be added to the calendar of events, and an email will be sent to website members announcing the event. Email the webmas-ter with your event info: [email protected].
