Overview The purpose of the Vertical Transportation Management Program (VTMP) is to provide basic entry level education in general business practices and technology related to the elevator industry. The target trainees are persons new to the elevator industry, individuals who have business experience in a related field or who have completed the CET, CAT or NEIEP programs. The full program offers up to 214 hours of online education, and awards a certificate of completion. The hours of study for the full program for each student varies depending upon his/her experience and education and the range is from 124 to 224 hours. Certificates of completion for part of the VTMP, technical or business, are available.

Program description The VTMP is comprised of four technical courses, five business courses, a comprehensive introduction to business course, and industry specific study guides with related quizzes.

Introduction to Business 100 This course is offered by Study.com for a fee of $59 if completed in one month. Thirty-five (35) study hours are estimated for completion. Persons may exempt this course if they have previously taken equivalent college courses and provide transcript with a minimum grade of "C."

Skillsoft Business courses The business courses include: 1) project management, 2) sales and marketing, 3) finance, 4) personnel management and ethics, and 5) business communication. The courses were developed by Skillsoft and require 112 study hours. The courses relate to general business practices and are not specific to the elevator industry.

Study Guides and Quizzes Study guides specific to the elevator industry were developed by the Committee and technical experts for the five business courses. The guides provide industry specific material with examples and require the student to answer questions related to the material. The Committee worked with Challenge Training Corporation (CTC) to develop the guides and quizzes. The estimated study time equals 12 hours and all students are required to complete the study guide quizzes.

Technical Courses The technical courses include: 1) technical basics, 2) technical tasks, 3) technical safety, and 4) codes and regulations. These courses were developed by Elevator World. Fifty-five (55) study hours are estimated for completion. Individuals with a CET/CAT, NEIEP or an international program may exempt the technical courses.

Program Management, Requirements and Fees Management NAEC coordinates the following: 1) application process, 2) confirming technical and previous college business courses for exemption, 3) collection of fees to NAEC 4) confirmation of completion of Business 100 course, 5) coordination of vendors (Elevator World, Skillsoft, and CTC) and compiling certificates of completion, 6) development of/coordinating instruction packet/syllabi for trainees, and 7) forwarding VTMP certificates of completion. NAEC will maintain a VTMP committee to address issues and to work with providers and experts to biannually update the program.

Technical Courses The four elevator technical courses were developed by Elevator World for individuals who seek basic knowledge of the technical aspects of the elevator industry as well as individuals who have not had on-the-job training. The courses provide an introductory level education about elevators. In order to fully meet the objectives of the courses, the course learning should be combined with on-the-job exposure and opportunities for practical application to the specific aspects of the student's position. The total number of hours for all four courses equals 55 hours. Elevator World will provide all books. The four courses are: technical basics, technical safety, technical tasks and codes and regulations. The four courses can be taken without the Skillsoft business courses and the student would also need to complete the Study Guides. The Business 100 course is strongly recommended. The student would receive a Certificate of Completion for the VTMP Technical Courses. The four technical courses are required for the person seeking a Certificate of Completion for the full VTMP. A person may exempt the technical courses provided proof of one of the below is approved:

1. Completion of the CET Certification Exam, CAT Certification Exam or NEIEP Mechanics Exam or

2. Completion of Elevator/Accessibility Training program – CET, CAT or NEIEP Educational training programs.

SkillSoft Business Overview The "assets" or topics of the five business courses were developed by Skillsoft Corp. and focus directly on the business practices that the general business/management/sales/supervisory level person will need in the elevator industry. The courses are general. As there are several specialties in the elevator industry (manufacturers, distributors and contractors), these different specialists will need to apply this general business information to their specific practices. The five courses are: business communications, finance, personnel management and ethics, sales and marketing, and project management. The courses are offered in video with live actors and accompanied with written text. The student is able to print out Skill Briefs which summarize the lessons and Job Aids which the student can use on his/her job. The compilation of the Skill Briefs and Job Aids would provide the student with a printed summary and constant resource for all five courses. The project management course is the most detailed and demanding of the five courses and requires 56 of the 112 hours of study. Information from other courses may be repeated in this course which reinforces learning. The person who completes the project management course is eligible to sit for an exam offered by the Project Management Institute, and upon passing the exam, the person will be certified as a project manager. The Skillsoft courses are managed by Skillsoft staff. It is essential that the student reviews the information about the site and system before attempting the first course as this will greatly assist him/her in navigating

Study Guides Overview The study guides were developed by the Committee and other technical experts in the elevator industry and are organized based on the five business courses. Each of the business courses may have five or more study guides. The purpose of the guides is to provide the student with a sampling of the application of technical and general business information to the business practices of the elevator industry. The guides include lists of resources, expert comments, examples of documents such as profit and loss statements, construction schedule, contracts, bids and insurance forms, assessment of contractor/supplier capabilities, approaches to sales and marketing, personnel roles and responsibilities with a construction project, and other relevant material. The study guides were formatted by CTC who also developed the quiz questions or "final exercises" related to each guide. The time required to complete the study guides is estimated at 12 hours.
