Historical Note

During a National Conference on State Parks and the American Institute of Park Executives in 1954,five men met and discussed the need for a separate meeting for those interested in interpretive programs.These five men, Harold Wallin, Walter Tucker, Frank Bunce, Garrett Eppley, and Reynold Carlson,began to hold annual workshops dubbed Workshop on Interpretive Programs in Bradford Woods, Indiana,and in 1958 the first suggestions were made to establish an organization for interpretation. In 1961, theAssociation of Interpretive Naturalists formed to serve those interested in interpretive programs in parks,zoos, nature centers, historic sites, museums, and aquaria. Due to expansion in attendance, 1961 was alsothe last year workshops were held at Bradford Woods. Under the Association of Interpretive Naturalists,the area including Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Wisconsin, became the Great Lakes Region in1968. In 1978, Region IX, the Michiana region, was formed from Indiana and Michigan and lasted until1987. The National Association for Interpretation was created in 1988 by combining the Association ofInterpretive Naturalists, and its western counterpart the Western Interpreters Association. Region IV, theGreat Lakes Region, includes Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario and contained 500 members in 2003.In 2003, the N.A.I. had 4,500 members in the United States, Canada, and thirty other countries.

Scope and Contents

The National Association for Interpretation, Great Lakes Region records includes board meetingminutes, membership lists, by-laws, annual reports, and other administrative records; organizationalhistories; national, regional, and mobile workshop documents; newsletters, conference proceedings,journals, and other publications; subjects files; audiovisual recordings; photographic prints, slides, andnegatives;artifacts; and born-digital files ranging from 1955 to 2015. The papers of Howard Weaver, pastpresident, officer, and active member, are also included in this collection and contain correspondence,awards, mailings, and other material primarily from the early years of the organization.

Scope and Contents

This series includes born-digital documents, spreadsheets, presentations, promotional materials,

newsletter working files, photographs, and videos documenting workshops and other activities of the

National Association for Interpretation, Great Lakes Region between 1998 and 2011. Also included

are scanned photographs, oral history transcripts, and other materials documenting the history of the

organization.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Electronic files were originally transferred on 3.5" floppy disks and CD-Rs. File formats include JPEG

and TIFF images, Adobe PDF and InDesign documents, Microsoft Word 97-2003 documents, Microsoft
