Background
A well trained staff in Knowledge Management (KM) is a key element of any modern administrative organization and an important kind of provision for the future.
Regulatory challenges:
• Secure the performance and competence of the nuclear authorities
• Taking into account the latest state of the art in science and technology
• Lessons learned from international practice
• Information exchange with external parties (BfS/GRS/ Länder Authorities/ international organizations)
• Improving the accessibility of information
- Knowledge is documented
- Knowledge is maintained
• Maintaining the know-how
Background
Knowledge Management: starting point in the late 90s
Danger of loosing the competence in reactor safety due to:
• Age-related retirement of many experts (generation change)
• Shortage of young people
Needs for:
• Another tool of knowledge transfer:
common working platform like IntranetPortal RS
• Reduction of the redundancy of storage locations:
- Registration
- File servers: common and only personally accessible
- E-mail system
- Special external systems

• Information sharing and distribution, and formation of a 'memory of the organization'
• Providing information on all activities of common interest
• To improve internal communication and cooperation in groups (teams)
• Transition from the e-mail-based communication to communication by groups
• Timeliness of the presented information and data
• Document Management System (DMS) for daily use
• Integration of an automatic process ( „workflow‟)
• Only access point for all information; accessible through the web browser
• To simplify the daily tasks for employees

• Simple and user-friendly interface with integrated e-mail, events calendar, and specialized procedures

• Document Management System (DMS) with versioning / check-in and check-out, available with configurable automatic import of e-mails

• E-Mail notification service for changes (for all content, usually used for the DMS)

• (Full Text) Search in structured / unstructured document folders
• In the current BMU-Intranet, all these features are not available

• Implementation of IRRS Mission recommendations and suggestions (Content expansion of IntranetPortal RS und creating Extranet for Bund-Länder with SharePoint 2007), creating Websites for :
- All current tasks of RS Department, structured according to priorities (strategic objectives 2009)
- All important national and international bodies responsible for the success of the RS Department
- Providing all important documents for the daily work of the RS Department (legal foundations and research projects)
- Knowledge areas of the RS Department including education and training
- Electronic documentation of important events / tasks
• entire BMU Intranet will be based on Microsoft SharePoint (MOSS 2007)
IntranetPortal RS: Conclusions
• Benefits of the current solution
– System is easy to handle and expandable
– Good tool for new staff members
– Flexible DMS to be used by various applications
• The IntranetPortal RS has proved itself as a practical tool
– Content/Layout: Editorial Team (RT, already active), Rights & Roles
– Technology: External Information Exchange (with GRS, pilot phase with Länder authorities, International Organizations), uniform filing scheme
• Intended improvements
– IntranetPortal RS as a best practice for other departments at the BMU
– Continuous and technological development
– Further enhancement of knowledge sharing, active distribution of new knowledge
– Integration of external data sources
– Rich source of knowledge
