FOOD & FITNESS

10 Reasons Why…4-H & Food & Fitness are Great Partners! 1. The Iowa 4-H Youth Devel-

opment Program provides op-portunities for youth to devel-op skills they can use now

and throughout their life.

2. Iowa 4-H builds upon a

century of experience as it fosters positive youth develop-

ment that is based on the needs and strengths of youth, their families, and communities.

3. Iowa 4-H follows the principles of experiential learn-

ing. 4-H’ers “learn by doing.”

4. 4-H’ers pledge their “Health to better living” every

time they meet.

5. 4-H programs are open to all young people from

fourth grade through grade 12.

6. There is an ISU Extension and Outreach office in

every county willing to support FFI youth teams and coaches.

7. Iowa 4-H draws on the knowledge base of Iowa

State University and other institutions of higher education in cooperation with the United States Department of Agri-culture.

8. The Iowa 4-H Program's vision and mission state-

ments clearly view youth as partners working with car-ing adults, and as full participants in planning and work-ing for individual and community change.

9. The Iowa 4-H program ensures that every youth will

have the opportunity to participate in 4-H experiences that strengthen a young person’s sense of belonging,

generosity, independence, and mastery.

10. Elected Extension councils in northeast Iowa have committed funds and staffing to ensure FFI Youth Team success! For more information on joining 4-H, contact your County Extension Office. To learn more about the Northeast Io-wa Food and Fitness Initiative go to www.iowafoodandfitness.org.

4H-Alphabet Soup --What Do All These Letters Mean?

Have you been at a 4-H activity lately with people referring to the CYC or maybe OA, REED or YFS and you wondered

what the heck these acronyms mean. At a recent post fair evaluation meeting it became clear that we need to explain

what each of these positions are and what their role and responsibilities might be when it comes to 4-H. So here goes,

CYC- County Youth Coordinator-Is responsible for management and program delivery of 4-H in your county. This posi-

tion is the person that you should contact with your questions regarding 4-H membership, programs, projects and experi-

ences.

OA-Office Assistant- provides support of the 4-H program by providing timely information to customers in the absence of

the CYC. You may find this position helping at a weigh-in or running a fair program. One of the major components of this

position is to ensure the financial information is maintained and that the county stays within their budget.

REED- Regional Extension Education Director- Is responsible for guiding the Extension Council in each county to devel-

op a county program and budget for programmatic leadership of what happens each year in the county.

YFS-Youth Field Specialist- Is responsible for the 4-H programs in each county in the Region. Working cooperatively

with leaders, staff and as youth program priorities, goals and objectives are developed each year. Volunteer develop-

ment and regional alignment are also responsibilities of this position.

RYC-Regional Youth Coordinator- Works cooperatively with the County Youth Coordinators to support their work. Lead-

ership for programs in Citizenship, Food and Fitness and Iowa’s Dairy Story are some of the responsibilities of this posi-

tion.

Youth Committee- This appointed committee serves a two year term and helps provide program direction and serves

as volunteers to ensure success of the county’s youth development program.

Extension Council- This elected position serves a four year term and is responsible for the comprehensive Extension

program in each county. Staff supervision, volunteer and budget approval are also support activities completed by the

Council.

Each of these staff and committee members work to ensure that you have a quality 4-H youth development program in

your county. So as you have needs when progressing through the 4-H year please feel free to contact any one of these

people to help you with your questions or concerns.

4-H 101

Pizzazz Night (recognition and awards night) will be held Sunday, November 20 at Johnson’s Reception Hall in Elka-

der. A spaghetti dinner will be held prior to the program from 5:30-7:30 pm as a fundraiser. Clubs will have advance

tickets to sell. The award program will begin at 7:30 pm. Record keeping winners, 4-H leader recognition awards and

special volunteer recognition awards will be presented that evening. Clubs will also be receiving completion awards
