Background:Bythelate1670s,manyofthefreewhitemeninVirginiawereformerindenturedservants(A)who,althoughtheyhadcompletedtheirservitude,hadlittlemoneytobuyland.Becausetheydidnotownland,theycouldnotvoteandthereforeenjoyedalmostnorightsincolonialsociety.ThesepoorcolonistslivedmainlyonthewesternoutskirtsofVirginia,wheretheyconstantlyfoughtwithNativeAmericansforland.(B)
GovernorWilliamBerkeleyfearedrebellion:“sixpartsofSevenatleastarePoore,Indebted,DiscontentedandArmed.”PlanterNathanielBaconfocusedinlandcolonists’angeratlocalIndians,whotheyfeltwereholdingbacksettlement,andatadistantgovernmentunwillingtoaidthem.(C)Inthesummerandfallof1676,Baconandhissupportersroseupandplunderedtheelite’sestatesandslaughterednearbyIndians.AfterGovernorBerkeleydeclaredBacon’sarmyillegal,BaconmarchedhismentoJamestowntoconfrontthecolonialleadersaboutanumberofgrievances.ThemarchturnedviolentandrebelssetfiretothetownasBerkeleyandothersfledbyship.(D)However,amonthaftertherebellion,Baconbecameillanddied.BerkeleywasabletoreturntoJamestownandeasilysubduetheleaderlessrebels.(E)
