Begun as a collaborative workshop with students Marielle Vargas and ErwinRiefkohl (Syracuse University), Matteo Bonanni (Università di Pisa), and Mar-nix de Jong (Technische Universiteit Delft) while studying abroad in Florence,Italy, the project called for the rebuilding of a theatre on the site where it hadbeen bombed and left vacant since WWII. Our group chose to not only me-morialize the theare but also the 70 year-old vacancy of the site. Following

the workshop the initial scheme was modified and resolved as an individualproject.

Combing two unique programs in N ew York’s Ken-mare square, the hostel rooms are lifted up whilepublic program floats above and sinks below.

Thus, the roof of the hostel creates an outdoor the-atre in the square that also function as an outdoor lobby for the performing arts center above.

Working with fellow Syracuse Universitystudent Galen Richmond in the ComprehensiveDesign Studio the project was sited adjacent

to Syracuse’s Center of Excellence. Thisgreen incubator business building utilizes anexisting historical wooden structure (u-haulstorage building) to create a sustainablecampus-like working environment. The brick

building skin ties the new and old programs  together while morphing to respond to thebuilding’s different site orientations.

As part of the Advanced Building Systemscourse and a collaboration with architecturestudent Dennis Harvey and engineering stu-dents Yixing Chen and Zhaozhou Meng, we firstbegan by analyzing and documenting buildingsystems in Louis Kahn’s Yale Center for BritishArt. The second phase of the project required

us to propose an alteration intended to optimizebuilding performance through the integration ofsustainable systems.

Assisting Professor Timothy Stenson and his design practice, student Dennis Harvey andI constructed a 1/4” sectional model for Syracuse’s Home Turf Exhibition, which includedProfessor Stenson’s work. Additionally, working in the summer with Prof. Stenson, a digi-

tal model and renderings were produced as a follow up to Syracuse’s From the GroundUp Competition.

While interning at Joeb + Partners I led a barn renovation project which includedclient meetings, site documentation, schematic design, design development, bidset coordination, and assembling specs. The previous under-used barn wasre-clad, had its interior retrofitted to serve as an art studio and lounge, and its rear

facade opened to view the woods. Continued as a design-build project, the barnrenovation will be completed in the Winter of 2011.

A remnant of the age-old public market still remains within thefabric of the contemporary city. Operating in ‘public benefit’produce terminal markets are distinct from the supermarketfood system and are the primary logistical space that provide

to independent retailers such as bodegas and restaurants in  the city. As more food is consumed outside of the home(more than half), these urban logistical spaces have a

revived role in providing fresh food to the urban populousand being integral to inner-city economies. As such whatare the possibilities that this these economically vital sitescan gain cultural importance. At these markets is therean opportunity for the economic efficiencies of logisticalarchitecture to collide with the social productivity of publicarchitecture? As defined by Clare Lyster, such a spacewould be a collisive site:

“  moments where excessive accumulation of exchange prevails, that design possibilities emerge, staging

opportunities for public space and other programmed

landscapes that can further occupy these sites with  activities and events other than those that were originally

 intended.”

It is my contention that by through the collusion ofpublic space into the logistical spaces of terminal producemarkets, that a new typology can develop that reifies urbanfood systems and can illuminate issues of urban food crisis, food (in)justice, and urban health. By intervening onto these

existing landscapes, the necessity and pleasure of food aspublic discourse can be reinstated, and re-imagined.
