Were African-Americans able to improve their situation as citizens in terms of gaining equal civil rights and opportunities in the United States?

We think YES.

Freedom Rides

African-Americans and whites went from state to state on buses to test the ruling in Boynton vs. Virginia which declared segregation in buses unconstitutional.

Along the way many buses were bombed. Many people were beaten during the protest.

African-Americans gained a lot of publicity and by the end of the summer the protest had spread to train stations and airports.

Later the Interstate Commerce Commission created rules that prohibited segregation on transportation facilities.

Lunch Counter Sit-Ins They showed the country the true face of racism that was

going on in the South.

They started protests against the restaurants that maintained segregated lunch counters, in a non-violent way. People would pour food and humiliate the volunteers but they would not retaliate.

By spreading the word through the protests, they showed Americans that blacks and whites deserve equal treatment.

Eight years later from the start of sit-ins BROWN vs. BOARD was passed which prohibited segregation in restaurants.

The students helped desegregate restaurants in 11 states.

Montgomery Bus Boycotts

As you know, Rosa Parks was a member of the NAACP and planned to refuse to give up her seat which led to the bus boycott.

The NAACP organized 42,000 African-Americans to boycott the Montgomery Bus Transportation to protest racially segregated seating.

After 381 Days of refusing to ride the bus, African- Americans eventually won their fight to desegregate seating on public buses.

Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her bus seat signaling the spark of the civil rights movement.

Convinced more than 80,000 African-Americans in Mississippi to register to vote after the voting rights act was passed.

A major part of convincing the government to pass the Civil Rights.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Brought to the world’s attention how unfairly blacks were treated.

Provided hope for many Americans and convinced them the time to act was now. ( To not be satisfied until they get their full rights)

Created non-violent platforms for the new organizations. This led to more white civil rights activists.

Led the peaceful march to the end of segregation. Such as the non-violent march to Washington and the “I have a dream speech”

Conclusion

We believe that African-Americans managed to improve their situation of gaining some Civil Rights.

We do believe that African-Americans had some setbacks and many lives were lost in the cause for equality. African Americans were able to overcome white supremacy and obtain equality.

African-Americans and whites were desegregated and integrated, but the attitudes of some whites did not change.
