Nastas Thomas work/accomplishments, Entrepreneur in Residence, Spartan Innovations, Michigan State University Term: 20 hrs/week, from 2014-2016, initial 12 month contract + 12 month extension + additional 1 month Nastas deep dive into 46 technologies in agriculture, nanotech, robotics, materials, clean tech, biofilms, food packaging, manufacturing and water/particle filtration for oil/gas E&P as examples. Portfolio of innovations Nastas brought forth to the market.
1. Adjuvant technology-Agriculture • Determined the tech’s value proposition––mosquito control, then malaria, created the biz model • Engaged with potential customers to validate/commercialize • Secured commitment from Manatee County Mosquito Control, Florida to test, and spent their $ to
test, no financial burden/cost to Spartan Innovations, Mich. State Univ. Tech Transfer 2. Plasma as feed stock in 3D Printing-Manufacturing
• Determined the tech’s value proposition––conductivity & subtractive (not just additive) • Engaged with potential customers to validate, 3D Systems and Made in Space • Secured commitment of MSUT to fund proof of concept and feasibility • Wrote the commercialization plan • Secured $42k TSGTD grant to advance the tech to prototype stage
3. Compression mat’l technology-Action Sports, Military & Packaging • Evaluated the technology, determined initial value proposition incorrect/misplaced • Identified the applications for the tech, engaged/confirmed with the market & created the biz model
+ value proposition––drive start-up’s sales but also new sales of customers’ products • Engaged with potential customers to validate & partner in development. Partial list includes:
Ø Athletic shoes––Nike, Adidas, Wolverine Ø Helmets––Bell Helmets, Smith Optics, Burton Ø Military––Walter Reed Medical Hospital, US Army Research & Material Command (USARMC) Ø Packaging––Cisco, HP
• Confirmed interest and commitment of USARMC to fund development work (wounded warriors) • Secured commitment of MSUT to fund two stages of development • Wrote two commercialization plans, to support two TSGTD grants • Secured $32k in 1st TSGTD grant to create/demo proof-of-concept & a $60k TSGTD to finance
prototype development • Negotiated option with all terms & conditions for exclusive license agreement with MSUT • Legal entity established in Dec. 2015, RecordWear LLC to receive $ for dev & commercialize
4. Subsurface water retention technology-Agriculture • Id the value proposition––site specific, not just crop specific, farms achieve better uniformity of soil
& even-out water & nutrient application to harmonize yields, harmonize water/chemical use • Defined the data needs & research protocols required for trial use & commercialization testing • Engaged farm owners, extension services & drip irrigation (US/Israeli) to partner
