05Greetings to all!

Welcome to the sixth issue of NassTalk. It is my honour to present our second newsletter for 2013.

We have reached a milestone this year as we have completed 50 years of leadership in the industry. Along with this issue, we are pleased to celebrate the new university on the block! We are proud of Applied Science University and we hope ASU will be the prime and leading university in connecting theory and practice.

Also, in this newsletter is the filming at Diyaar, all about Bahrain Building Chemicals W.L.L, GCCC events, more on environmental awareness, training programmes conducted, launching of the new websites and much more.

This issue gives each of us an opportunity to look back at our achievements and strive to achieve goals that may appear challenging. We must always be thankful of how we got to where we are at the moment.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Mr. G.K. Roy to the NASS Group. We wish you all the very best in the job you set out to do and hope you have an enriching experience with us. Also, I would like to thank all our employees have contributed to our success.

ECITB Honours Nass Contracting Safety Manager

Diyaar Al Muharaq, a client of NASS, recently had a filming of the project ‘Diyaar’ where NASS Contracting was involved. Engineer Fatima from site was interviewed to script the film on the making of Diyaar project.

Nass Contracting Safety Manager received an international award from ECITB in recognition of his contribution to Environmental Awareness training.

Mr Abdulnabi Marhoon was presented with a recognition plaque for his contribution to the ECITB training programme where he introduced a new module of ‘Environmental Awareness’ to the course.

The Environmental Awareness course mainly covers: environmental legislation, environmental management, environmental protection and the environmental audit processes that form an integral part of the ‘Continual Improvement’ techniques that are a necessity of a sustainable environmental management system.

The ECITB has now incorporated the Environmental Awareness course into its suite of core worldwide training programmes. It is included within the ECITB International Health and Safety passport scheme.

The ECITB International Health and Safety Passport scheme ensures that all site personnel have reached a recognised level of Health and Safety knowledge and awareness to assist them in working on site more safely with reduced risk to themselves and others. The ECITB scheme consists of three training courses specifically designed for the engineering - construction industry: Foundation, Advanced and Supervisor.

Mr Collinson said; “The ECITB is extremely pleased with Mr. Marhoon’s ideas and his commitment to the subjects of Environment, Health and Safety training and is delighted to present the plaque in recognition of Mr Marhoon’s hard work, knowledge of the subject matter and enthusiastic support for the training initiative. This was a great initiative not only for Nass Contracting and Bahrain, but also for all those that work within the Engineering Construction Industry worldwide to increase Environmental Awareness.”

Nass Contracting is the only contractor to be recognised as an Approved Centre to deliver the ECITB International Health and Safety Passport courses in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Nass Contracting has trained over 1275 employees in the ECITB International Health and Safety Passport Foundation course and 160 employees in the ECITB International Health and Safety Passport Advance course since obtaining their ECITB accreditation in 2011.

Seef Mall ExhibitionThe Ministry of Municipalities & Urban Affairs Under Secretary

Dr. Nabeel Abu Alfath inaugurated the exhibition. The Manama Municipality General Director Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Alkhalifa, & Muharraq Municipality General Director Mr. Saleh Alfadaleh & a number of officials from the Ministry had also attended the exhibition. The event was targeted towards the visitors of Seef Mall; more than 20 schools visited the exhibition from Manama. It educated the public

and raised public awareness. It also had workshops on how to transfer trash to art.

Environmental Sand Sculpture ContestEnvironmental Sand Sculpture contest was held in Karbabad. The opening ceremony was attended by Manama Municipality General Director Sh. Mohammed bin Ahmed Alkhalifa & Manama Council Vice President Mr. Mohammed Mansoor. The winning 3 art works received trophies.

Exhibition in OmanGCCC was the prime sponsor of the 2nd International Conference For Waste Management-

Muscat that was held on 25th and the 26th of March 2013 at Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Muscat, Oman.

The event was held under the patronage of the Omani Minister of Municipalities & Environment Affairs. GCCC had an exhibition stand where it showcased its achievements and capabilities as the leading Waste Management provider in the Middle East; Hesham Alhaddad discussed how GCCC has managed to succeed in Bahrain “Pioneering Privatisation in Bahrain” presented a paper. The Muscat Municipality awarded GCCC with a trophy for the excellent paper presented.

Municipal WeekGCCC participated in the Municipal Week back in

May with Manama Municipality. The Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Khalid Bin Abdulla Alkhalifa, & Misiter of Municipalities & Urban Planning Dr. Juma Alkabie visited the GCCC stand that was along with Manama Municipality Stand.

Mr. Ali Mansoor received an award from the Ministry of Municipalities & Urban Planning for his outstanding Municipal performance. The award was presented by the Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Khaled bin Abdulla Alkhalifa.

One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s TreasureA workshop was presented to the Muharraq Municipality Staff. The workshop was presented over two weeks twice a day. The first workshop was attended by the Muharraq Municipality General Director Mr. Saleh Alfadhaleh. This has also been part of the initiative to raise public awareness starting with the municipality staff the workshop title was “One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure“.

Environment Protection WeekA huge environmental campaign to clean Manama, Bahrain’s

capital was launched on 21st May 2013. It was launched under the theme “together towards a clean capital”. The drive was held until June 1st at Seef Mall with an aim to protect the environment and promote the culture amongst the Bahrain community. The week featured lectures and workshops on ways to reduce waste, proper disposal and recycling prepared by GCCC in collaboration with Manama Municipality.

The Environment Protection Week campaign was part of the governments’ efforts to implement sustainable urban development strategies and stressed on the importance to protect the environment.

Zari Ateeq‘Zari Ateeq’ is an old culture in the region were a man walks around the street with a wheel barrow and collects old and broken house hold items and exchanges it with some new items which can be used at home. GCCC is starting this campaign in Bahrain again and they will have a similar new look Zari Ateeq walk the streets collecting old goods. This recycling campaign was launched on 2nd July at the Movenpick Hotel. The Minister of Municipalities Dr. Juma Alkabie attended the event. The campaign was aimed at teaching the citizens more about the benefits of recycling.

Fabrication Project- Complete!NASS Marine Services, a marine division of the NASS Group, recently handed over a

competed project that involved the fabrication of a new deck cargo barge to Ocean Diving & Marine Services that is owned and operated by Mr. Samir Engineer in the Kingdom.

The vessel, Ocean 8 was fabricated to include a new deck cargo barge with a depth of 1.83 mts, gross tonnage of 217 RT and net tonnage of 65 RT. “We offer a variety of deck barges making sure that they have been customised to suit our clients’ needs. The barge used by ocean Diving & Marine Services has been specifically designed to carry cargo on deck and performing a number of other functions and services,” said Director Mr.Sami Nass

New University on the BlockApplied Science University (ASU) is all set to move to its new

campus in September 2013. The campus has been established according to international standards.

The total built up area of the campus spreads over 24,000 sqm and is designed to accommodate around 2100 students at the same time, to reach a capacity of 6300 students distributed over mornings, evenings and weekends, which is ideal for staff and students alike. Dr. Waheeb Al Khaja, the President of ASU said: “The buildings conforms to international standards proposed by the Advisory Office in adopting the design requirements of the Gulf, European and American universities.”

Ghazi Nass, CEO of NASS Contracting said: “The work began in March last year and 95% of the academic building have been completed. The project is progressing restlessly in an attempt to meet the scheduled delivery date.”

The project supports the development of Tubli Bay and takes into account raising environmental awareness among students through energy conservation. The design combines modernity and classic character that gives it a unique character that reflects the university’s vision to linking academic study and the applications of modern technology.

The new campus includes four faculties: Firstly, a new Engineering faculty that will open with the opening of the new campus and getting the approval from Higher Education Council. It includes four departments: Architecture Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering departments. Secondly, Faculty of Arts and Sciences that includes three departments: Computer Science, Graphic and interior design, General Studies departments. Thirdly, Faculty of Law, which includes: Public law and Private law departments. Finally, Administrative Science, which includes: Business Administration, MIS, Accounting, and Political Science departments.

The new university campus consists of 3 main buildings: Academic building that consists of six floors and a ground floor featuring the front yard and entrance hall, admissions and registration office, cafes, lounges and a library that includes all the requirements and the issues set forth by the Higher Education Council, in addition to 13 research chambers, computers in electronic library and enough shelves to house 23 thousand books and references.

The second building is the administrative and services building. With a total area of 2200 sqm, this building includes administrative offices and areas for student activities, including the ground floor, which includes a gym, a hall for exhibitions and seminars, in addition to the administrative offices of the university’s president and departments’ managers and meeting rooms. The third building is the continuing education building and it consists of two floors with a total area of 1266 sqm, 633 sqm per floor.

AutoCAD upgrade

Trainings

NASS Contracting CAD technicians upgraded their skills on AutoCAD 2013 with a training session from Oryx Technologies. The training was held on 9th May 2013, by the QA/QC department. All the participants received a certificate upon the completion of the course.

As part of the rigourous training sessions, staff and workers from NASS Commercial and NASS Procurement had recently attended a 15 hour General Health and Safety Training at the Talal Abu Ghazaleh Training Group with an aim of creating a culture of safety in the minds of all, and to familiarise them with the latest health and safety practices.

Mr. Shaheeb who was a part of the Nass family retired to be with his family on 16th May. He worked as a Purchaser in the Nass Procurement and Logistics Division. We thank him for his contribution to our organisation.

What key developments have you seen in NASS Asphalt over the years?I joined nine years ago just at the end of the Hidd infrastructure project, which was the project that started Nass Asphalt. We had already become lowest on the term tender and shortly after my arrival we were awarded the project. The term contract had traditionally been carried out by 2 long established asphalt companies, so we initially had to earn the confidence of our client. The term tender work allowed us the foundation from which we were able to grow. The next milestone project for us was the Bahrain Map in which we acted as pavement sub-contractors to Nass Contracting. This was a milestone project for Nass Contracting as well, as it was not only their first major road project. I believe it was the first project of its type carried out solely by a Bahraini company. Nass Asphalt

has looked at a steady but continual growth. When I started nine years ago, we had 45 staff and now we have 450 but it is not just about the numbers, it is also the capability of the staff as many who joined us in the early days who are still with us and their abilities to grow with the company. At present, we are working at the Bahrain International Airport, one of our many noteworthy and important projects in Bahrain.

Tell us a little about the Bahrain Construction market that NASS Asphalt is involved in.NASS Asphalt had their record year last year. We did this by maintaining high volumes and pricing very competitively. We look to be competitive by controlling our supply chain cost as much as possible. Much of our production is based on double shifting and this results in lower production and haulage costs. Although we feel the market is improving, it is still very tough and we are constantly looking to find new opportunities.

What strategy do you implement to get the best out of the team?Team effort is very important if one needs to achieve their goal. I look to involve the team as much as possible in the decision making as I believe this is the best method of getting people to buy in and take responsibility. We have 3 tiers of team meetings, senior management, department management and site staff. From experience, this is the best way of communicating strategies and getting feedback. We also employ an open door policy.

What project has stood out and why?Well, the projects that have stood out would undoubtedly be the Term Contracts, as these projects have helped us grow in this industry. At the same time, the major road infrastructural projects such as the Bahrain Map and Isa Town Gate have been very important. Our important projects also include working on the taxiways and runways at Sakhir Airbase and Bahrain International Airport. We have also carried out major highway projects as the main contractor Sheikh Salman and Arad highway being the most recent. We have worked for BAPCO, Tatweer, Royal Court, ASRY and the BDF as the main contractor and sub-contractor that has been good for building our portfolio of experience.

What does the future hold for NASS Asphalt?The future looks very promising. We have few ideas that are in the process of coming alive. One such is recycling.

What advice has stuck with you throughout your professional career?I have learnt that it is always the best option is to spend your time and effort in doing a quality job the first time. As the saying goes, “first impression is the best impression”!

Creating a Culture of Safety

New module added to the ECITB course

NIT Safety Course

HSE Manager, NASS Contracting, Mr. Abdulnabi Marhoon had introduced a new module of ‘Environmental Awareness‘ to the ECITB course. Realising that this module was not initially present in the programme, he trained the employees on the importance of environmental awareness. This training was held at Al Safir Hotel on the 15th of April.

NASS International Trading’s Mr. Hasona and Mr. Mirano recently attended safety training for creating an awareness of safety and how to be prepared during any situation.

Mr. G.K.Roy joined NASS Mechanical Contracting CO. W.L.L as General Manager in 2013. With a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Business Administration from the USA, he has brought with him a 34 year long career where he worked his way up the management structure, thus giving him a clear idea about almost every aspect in his field. His expertise includes Strategic Planning & Project Management, Creating and developing long term revenue streams through mergers & acquisitions, Business Development, Technology Transfer, Corporate restructuring and Quality Management. He has a diversified experience in EPC/LSTK for various sectors in Oil & Gas, Refinery, Petrochemical, Chemical, Cement, Power, Water and Desalination, Metal and Mining sector. He has also had hands on experience in Sales and marketing, Design, Estimation, Fabrication, Welding, QA/QC, and Manufacturing of Pressure Vessels, Heat Exchangers, Tank- Shop and Site installation, nuclear plant equipment, etc. We would like to welcome you into the Nass Family.

Mr. Arsalan Saeed, a Ticketing Purchaser at NASS Procurement and Logistics was awarded for his high quality of work, his ability for developing procedures on his own and finding ways to solve problems that occur in the ticketing department and the filing system.

First Aid is Important!A First Aid course was conducted highlighting the importance of safety and first aid. The two-day course was conducted for 30 NASS Contracting employees at the Arabian East Training Centre. Employees from the ASRY project, Alba Refractory Project and Private Villa Project attended the training. The course conducted by the HSE department covered First Aid, CPR and AED Training.
