WHO IS NASOM?

• The National Autism Society of Malaysia(NASOM) is a society formed in 1987 bya group of parents and professionalswith the aim to deliver lifespan servicesto the community of persons sufferingfrom autism

• NASOM was registered on 3rd March1987 as a national charitableorganization and it strives to provide arange of support services to assistpeople living with autism, especiallychildren and their immediate familymembers

• NASOM is a non governmental bodywith 13 Board Members. Day to dayadministration and operations areheaded by the Chief Executive andsupported by more than 150 staffmembers inclusive of teachers, with 20centers nationwide

• Children with autism have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions and leisure or play activities, and is hard for them to communicate with others

• Autism has been estimated tooccur in as many as 1 in 68children (CDC, 2012), whichmeans that approximately 9,000children in Malaysia are at a risk

• Autism affects the normaldevelopment of the brain in theareas of social interaction andcommunication skills.

• Autism is a complex developmental disability, that appears during the first three years due to a neurological disorder that affects the brain and is four times more common in boys than girls

-Unusual responses to peopleor attachments to objectsand resistance to changes inroutines

-Repeated bodymovement, such as handflapping or rocking

-Experience sensitivities in the fivesenses of sight, hearing, touch, tasteand smell.
