WHO IS NASOM? The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) is a society formed in 1987 by a group of parents and professionals with the aim to deliver lifespan services to the community of persons suffering from autism NASOM was registered on 3rd March 1987 as a national charitable organization and it strives to provide a range of support services to assist people living with autism, especially children and their immediate family members NASOM is a non governmental body with 13 Board Members. Day to day administration and operations are headed by the Chief Executive and supported by more than 150 staff members inclusive of teachers, with 20 centers nationwide Children with autism have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions and leisure or play activities, and is hard for them to communicate with others Autism has been estimated to occur in as many as 1 in 68 children (CDC, 2012), which means that approximately 9,000 children in Malaysia are at a risk Autism affects the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Autism is a complex developmental disability, that appears during the first three years due to a neurological disorder that affects the brain and is four times more common in boys than girls -Unusual responses to people or attachments to objects and resistance to changes in routines -Repeated body movement, such as hand flapping or rocking -Experience sensitivities in the five senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell.
