Nashville-Davidson County Resident Survey
2018Q1
Purpose
• Gauge resident perceptions of Nashville-Davidson County and performance of Metro Government
• Demonstrate commitment to accountability/transparency
• Identify community priorities as input to budget process
• Benchmark against peer cities to learn and improve
4/16/2018 2
Overview
• Metro’s first-ever community survey of this type
• Administered by ETC Institute (Olathe, KS) via mail, Internet, and phone (2018Q1: February 1 – March 6)
• Confidential—no information that could be used to identify respondents is provided to Metro
• Cover letter included instructions for translation
• $38,450 annually
4/16/2018 3
Methodology
• Random sample of 1,600 completed surveys annually (+/- 2.5% at 95% confidence level) and 400 completed surveys quarterly (+/- 5% at 95% confidence level)
• Limited budget for trial run means limited sampling—many things we can’t say after one quarter but will improve with more data from subsequent surveys
• 2018Q1 sample skewed a bit older and higher income, but generally representative on race/ethnicity and gender
• Note differences in perceptions when geography changes in wording of question—Nashville vs. “your neighborhood”

Benchmark Communities
4/16/2018 6
Benchmark cities/counties (population ≥ ~400,000) selected from ETC Institute database and found on slides for questions where data exists for at least three benchmark cities/counties. There may be slight variation in wording of questions across communities. Several questions were included in the local survey that are unique to Nashville-Davidson County and thus do not have benchmarks (N/A). The majority of benchmark data is compiled from surveys conducted in 2016 or 2017.
