Introducing NICM 8.5
• NICM 8.5 is the midway point between 2018’s NICM VIII release, and a future NICM 9 release.
• NICM 8.5 yields the SAME estimates as NICM VIII.
• We’re not rocking the boat on your current estimates.
• So, why should you download NICM 8.5?

Why you should download NICM 8.5
• XXX New instruments added to support analogy tools.
• Upgraded Search Engine now supports:
• “Or” Searches
• String Searches, focused or global
• Wildcard Searches
• Parameter Display Toggles
• System Tool Tech Parameter Plot:
• Now displays the names and key parameters of each instrument
• Foreign Instrument Data added to the tech parameter plot only
• Subsystem Tool now supports user overrides for cost
• Instrument Datasheet Hyperlinks added in several new places to load instrument data instantaneously and automatically.

Search Engine Upgrades
jpl.nasa.gov
OR Search• The Legacy NICM Search Engine performed AND searches only
• Below would find: Optical AND 50 kg +/-35% AND 50 W +/- 35%
jpl.nasa.gov
OR Search
• OR Searches are achieved via multiple GUIs. The Engine will return results fitting the first GUI OR the second GUI.
jpl.nasa.gov
OR Search
Simple Example
• GUI 1 is looking for Optical Instruments
• GUI 2 is looking for Active Microwave Instruments
jpl.nasa.gov
OR Search
Simple Example
• Search returns all Instruments that are Optical OR Active Microwave.

Local String Search
The new local string search allows you to search for a string within a particular field.

Global String Search• The new global string search allows you to search the entire
database for any string. It will return every instrument that contains the string in any parameter.
jpl.nasa.gov
Wildcard Searches now Supported
*https://www.deskbright.com/excel/excel-wildcard/
jpl.nasa.gov
Parameter Display Toggles• The Search Engine will always display a Field used to perform
a Search.
• In the Search below, Element Type, Remote Sensing Type and Remote vs. In-Situ will all be displayed in the output
• Now, you can trigger the Search Engine to return Fields NOT used in your search. Clicking on a Field Label will make it bold, indicating it will be displayed in the output.
• The “Design Life” and “Instrument Name Abbreviated” will be displayed with the Search Engine Output in the Search above.

System Tool Upgrades
jpl.nasa.gov
System Tool Tech Parameter Plot - Hovering
• Hovering over a data point will display the instrument’s name and key parameters:
jpl.nasa.gov
System Tool Tech Parameter Plot - Clicking
• Clicking on a data point will display load the instruments datasheet.

Foreign Instrument Data• Foreign built instrument data now appear in the Tech
Parameter Plot in the System Tool.

Subsystem Tool Upgrades
jpl.nasa.gov
Model Cost Estimate Overrides• The Subsystem Tool now supports user cost
• Overridden costs will highlight in yellow, as well as any downstream costs that are dependent on the overridden parameter.

Sneak Peek: NICM 9
• Expect a full refresh of all CERs and SERs based off of freshly collected data.
• Exploring the role of Class in the Subsystem CERs and Wraps.
• Exploring splitting the Detector CERs into further subcategories.
• Exploring data imputation methods to utilize incomplete data.
• Implement improved correlation approach to sum the NICM Subsystem Tool CERs.
• And much more!
jpl.nasa.gov
Sneak Peek: NICM 9
NICM 9 will incorporate the notion of Mission Class into subsystem CERs and wraps, as appropriate.
Interaction effects of Mission Class with destination type (EO/PL) need to be consideredAs we investigate Mission Class, other relationships may surface in the data that were masked before
Max Power may play more of a role in the subsystem model
Significant Effect of Mission Class
Observed to-date?Subsystems
Yes Electronics, Mechanical
Possibly Optics, Software, Thermal, Wraps
No Antennas*, Detectors*
*Not enough data YET for Antenna and CCD Detector subsystems to evaluate the effect of Mission Class.
