The Ten Commandments of Information Governance & E-Disclosure 2013

1. Govern your information before your information governs you

A fully developed information governance strategy will reduce at source the risk, cost and volume of data in future eDiscovery exercises. Get it right and you get a measure of control. Get it wrong and your data controls you. And it becomes expensive.

2. Governance is not Someone Else’s Problem – it’s Yours

Information governance is not Legal’s problem. It’s not IT’s problem. It’s not records management’s problem. And it’s not compliance’s problem. Success is down to all of you, working as a team.

3. To Have and to Hold is Good, but not til Death Us Do Part

Do not just keep data indefinitely because storage is cheap. When you get a dispute, investigation or regulatory review, that cheap storage looks very expensive when it has to be collected by service providers and reviewed by lawyers. Have a defensible disposition strategy and reduce that volume.
