As described by one woman, ‘The Cloud of Depression makes me exhausted. It’s like a crushing fatigue and has me always thinking …Where is my life going? This workshop will include narrative ideas and practices that assist people in journeying from stories of depression to stories of hope and preferred identities. Angel Yuen will share stories of her work alongside young people and adults and during this one-day training together with her we will: o explore some of the taken-for-granted understandings and medicalised discourse of depression o develop skills in the narrative therapy practice of double-listening while viewing video interviews o consider how broader stories of oppression (i.e.: poverty, racism, and homophobia) can contribute to a sense of hopelessness o discover and explore unique outcomes – finding a ‘crack’ in the story of hopelessness o learn how to move from individual to collective narrative practice (where an individual can make a contribution of hope to others) o explore how music sustains during despairing times o build skills in asking re-membering questions to thicken preferred identity stories This training will be suited to practitioners who have an existing knowledge of Narrative Therapy. For those new to narrative ideas, we suggest first reading the introductory chapters available online from the Dulwich Centre website titled What is Narrative Therapy? An Easy to read introduction by Alice Morgan and Externalising – Commonly asked Questions by Maggie Carey and Shona Russell.
