The NArFU: Substantiation

I. The strategic geo-political situation of the Arkhangelsk region:

• the largest territory in the N-WFD• the geographical and historical

centre of the Russian North• «the gateway to Arctic», the initial

point for the Northern Maritime Route. Perspectives: the deep-water port and railway Belkomur (The White Sea–Komi-Ural)

• Consumer market 35 million (1500 km from Arkhangelsk)

II. The economic potential of the Arkhangelsk region:

• Mineral resources (oil, gas, diamonds, bauxite, multi-metallic ores, gold, platinum…)

• Forestry, energy, fishery resources• High-technological production –
