On receipt of zoning approval, a resolution will be

presented to the congregation, authorizing the First

Narayever Congregation to proceed with the project.

Be sure to read a letter in this Newsletter from shul

parents explaining the vital importance of shul

accessibility for their family (page 5).

Our Refugee Sub-committee of the

Social Action Committee under the

leadership of Morley Beiser and Pippa

Feinstein has have been equally busy. In

response to the terrible Syrian refugee

crisis and concern expressed by many

shul members, this committee has

investigated how we could address this

situation as a community. With Board

approval, we are now proceeding to

sponsor a refugee family. The Social Action

Committee is currently fundraising. Donations can be

made by sending a cheque to the shul, calling the

office with credit card information, or donate online

through www.canadahelps.org and search for First

NarayeverPlease be generous as we need your

support to help make the sponsorship happen as

soon as possible. Please see the article from the

Social Action Committee for more details.

With best wishes,

The administrative demands of the shul are huge,

growing as our membership grows. It has become

increasingly difficult to manage with a part-time

Director of Administration. I'm pleased to inform you

that Marsha Frydenberg is now working full-time in

the office, with continuing help from the equally

wonderful Ariella Eben-Ezra, Assistant Director.

Dear Friends,

In many ways our volunteers are the lifeblood of the

Narayever. The listing of the names of the many

volunteers over the High Holy Days took an entire

page in the last Newsletter!

Every program and special project is the result of

volunteer effort with of course the

important support of our office staff and

Rabbi Elkin. If you haven't volunteered

yet, please consider doing so. It's a great

mitzvah and helps people feel part of our

community. Watch the weekly Narayever

Net for requests for specific skills. For

those who don't want to join a

committee, this is a good way to give to

the shul.

I would like to give special thanks to four of our most

recent volunteers: Debra Haworth, Jim Jarvie, Jordan

Wosnick and Sarah Wyld. They have responded to our

call for volunteers to help with various IT supports

that are vital to the functioning of our office. Thank

you to our Vice President, Barry Pervin, for organizing

this successful recruitment effort.

A big thank you also to Roz Train who, along with her

daughter Eliana, has offered to take the post of High

Holy Days Coordinator. Roz is also our Board

Secretary, and so we are especially grateful for all the

time and effort she puts into the shul.

These past few months have been especially busy for

the Building Task Force under the leadership of co-

chairs Harry Schachter and Anna Pace. As reported in

Narayever Net, we are now entering a very important

phase of the Building Accessibility and Expansion

Project. An architect will be preparing drawings for us

to submit to the City for zoning review. At the same

time we will be discussing the project with neighbors

and residents of the area, and laying the groundwork

for a capital fundraising campaign.

Upon hearing of the recent decision by the Orthodox

Rabbinical Council of America's decision to officially

ban its members from ordaining women rabbis or

allowing female clergy to serve in Orthodox

institutions, I had three contradictory reactions.

The first was to yawn. The fact that the

Orthodox movement opposes women

rabbis is after all not exactly a shocker!

The second was surprise. Are they even

debating this question? I'm pretty far

removed from the conversation in the

Orthodox world, but I do know that there

is a great deal of ferment in that

community. There are forces pulling them

to more extreme stands, and also forces

pulling them towards more openness to change on

certain issues. But I wasn't aware that ordination was

being pursued vigorously enough to require a

response. The educational opportunities afforded to

Orthodox women interested in high level Jewish

learning are incomparably stronger now than they

were in previous generations. Among all these smart

Orthodox women who are now learned in Jewish

sources, it seems that some are pushing for ordination.

Might this vote, even though the outcome was

negative, hint at more dynamism within the Orthodox

world regarding the role of women than I was aware

of?

My third reaction was frustration. As someone who is

firmly committed to egalitarianism as a Jewish value,

as the rabbi of a congregation which is firmly

committed to women's equality in Jewish life and

which has benefited so greatly from the participation

and leadership of women, I find it hard to understand

how these men could once again choose to deprive

their community of the potential religious leaders

among half their population. I know some fine female

colleagues in the Orthodox world, and I am upset that

NARAYEVER NEWS

RABBI’S MESSAGE

their status as teachers of Torah and decisors of Jewish

law is not being recognized in their own community.

Those were my initial responses. But after thinking

about it some more, I started to reflect on another.

Perhaps the RCA decision might actually be good for

the Jewish people? Is it good that we have a sector of

the Jewish people who are committed to

retaining traditional practices in key areas

of Jewish life?

I am obviously someone who believes that

it's important that there be a sector of the

Jewish people that is open to changing and

evolving and developing in response to

new insights such as feminism (which is, I

believe, rooted in ancient insights about

the equal humanity of women and men).

We are part of that sector, and we have to make it as

strong as possible. But I don't think we liberals have all

the answers.

As frustrating as they may be sometimes for their

resistance to change, our Orthodox brothers and

sisters do have much to teach us. The depth of

commitment to serious Jewish learning for themselves

and their children. The sacrifices they are willing to

make for Jewish observance. The strength of their

communal bonds, and the readiness to step up and

support each other in time of need. They natural way

in which they welcome each other, as well as strangers,

into their homes. The power of their faith in God.

There is much to critique in the Orthodox world, but

these are all values which we liberals can learn from

that world.

Can we aspire to all those good things while still

remaining egalitarian? Or is there something about

embracing modern values like women's equality

which inevitably lessens commitment to those other

values? Can we have it all? That is one of the key

questions I ask myself, and which I think all serious

liberal Jews, should ask themselves.

Dear Friends,

SHUL MATTERS

Update: The Narayever Building

Accessibility and Expansion Project

The Building Task Force thanks Josh and Ali Engel-Yan

for their heart-felt letter about their family's urgent

need for accessibility (page 5). We know they speak for

many, and we want to assure Josh and Ali, and the

other members of the Narayever community with

mobility difficulties, that we take their concerns and

needs seriously. The desire to make the shul accessible

is widely shared in the congregation.

We also want to assure everyone that we have been

putting considerable effort into finding a way to make

the shul accessible. The Building Task Force has been

working systematically for nearly two years to review

options and to find consensus within the shul

community about the best steps forward.

Here's what has been happening most recently.

It is necessary to understand what the larger

community envisions – and what it is willing to pay for –

when deciding on the best plans for our shul. Last

month members of the congregation were asked to

respond to a survey about options for accessibility and

expansion of our building. (If you somehow missed the

survey and would like to see the detailed report that

accompanied it, please contact the shul office or email

[email protected]).

Here are the results of that survey: 101 members

responded. Of that number, 85% either supported or

strongly supported Option One, renovating and

expanding within the property, the preferred option

presented by the Building Task Force. There were also

many comments, covering a wide range of views.

In addition to the survey questionnaire, meetings were

also held on October 18 and 21, where members of the

congregation could ask questions and discuss the

options.

BUILDING TASK FORCEGiven the overall support from responders to the

survey, combined with the results of our earlier survey

in January, where 87% of respondents said the status

quo was unacceptable, the Building Task Force is

proceeding with the next steps to achieve accessibility

and expansion under Option One.

The Narayever Board endorsed the BTF decision at its

meeting on Sunday, November 22nd.

The Task Force will now retain architects to complete a

design suitable for submission for zoning review, and

will then apply

f o r z o n i n g

a p p r o v a l .

Concurrent ly,

the Task Force

will engage and

c o n s u l t w i t h

neighbors and

residents of the

area, and lay the

groundwork for

a c a p i t a l

f u n d r a i s i n g

campaign.

At a later date,

on receipt of zoning approval, a resolution will be

presented to the next Annual General Meeting or a

Special General Meeting called for the purpose,

authorizing the First Narayever Congregation to

proceed with the project through a combination of

grants, large gifts, donations and borrowed funds, the

borrowed funds to be repaid through an annual levy on

members.

This process envisions a renewed and accessible

Narayever shul in 2018.

NARAYEVER NEWS

SHUL MATTERS

Dear Narayever Community,

I'm writing as a very long time Narayever member, former

Board member (four years), and a parent of the amazing 5 year

old, Gavi Engel-Yan. As many of you are aware, Gavi has a

muscle condition and can't walk. Luckily and amazingly she is

already completely independent in her power wheelchair –

and is absolutely the best 5 year old driver I have ever seen (I'm

not kidding - she can back into tiny spaces like an expert). Not

only does the power wheelchair give Gavi the obvious

independence you would expect, she is a completely different

kid when she is in it – much more outgoing, sassy, and

confident. This summer, we renovated our backyard with a full

ramp so she can bring her power chair into our house and we have seen this

amazing transformation. (As some of you may not be aware, power wheelchairs are extremely heavy – hers

is 250 lbs and cannot be lifted at all. They can only enter places that are accessible).

Anyways, as you all obviously also know, our shul is not accessible. When we come to shul now, we carry Gavi

and she is confined to sitting wherever we put her. She is also notably very quiet – with several unknowing

people even asking us if she can talk (I'm sure you can imagine how that feels). While she is just five, so the

carrying isn't too much of an issue at this time, it will soon be both impossible and unfair to her as an older kid

to continue to carry her around. Gavi needs to be able to come to shul in her power chair so she can be

independent and play like all the other kids. We recognize that we are one of the first very involved

Narayever families to have a child who requires an accessible building to fully participate – while we were

longtime members before we had Gavi, it is likely that many families in similar situations to ours are

simply not joining or coming because the shul simply cannot accommodate

them. So let us be the face for all those people and for ourselves.

What the lack of accessibility means for us practically, is that if the shul is not

accessible in the next few years, we will have to leave the shul. We are not

willing to celebrate our older daughters' bat mitzvahs (they are now 8) and

certainly not Gavi's bat mitzvah, in a place where Gavi is not able to move

around. I am sure you can all understand that.

I have been around for a long time – I was around when this was first discussed

almost ten years ago. I also know that minority rights are unlikely to be fought

for by an unaffected majority. Let's wait. Let's see. Maybe next year. In Canada,

we don't let the will of the majority vote on or make decisions on whether or not

to ensure the rights of minorities. I hope our shul community recognizes that.

We are willing to speak, to write, to be the face for funders. Whatever it takes.

But it needs to happen. In the words of a famous advertising campaign, Just do it. It's time.

To be a Jew is to be engaged in the ongoing work of

tikkun olam – standing up for the oppressed,

partnering with others to improve the world in which

we live, and constantly reminding ourselves that

human rights are not recognized everywhere and can

never be taken for granted. On behalf of our shul, the

Social Action Committee has focused its recent efforts

on helping the helpless, supporting worthy groups at

home and in Israel who are engaged in tikkun olam,

and standing for human rights around the world.

Helping the Helpless: The First Narayever Shul will

sponsor a Syrian refugee family's resettlement in

Canada. This past summer, many members of the

congregation expressed concern over the plight of

Syrian refugees. A Social Action refugee sub-

committee was formed to look into how we could

transform concern into positive action. After

extensive consultation within the First Narayever

community and information gathering about

initiatives that were being taken by other shuls and

organizations, and after considering a number of

options, the sub-committee finally recommended that

the shul undertake to privately sponsor a Syrian

refugee family. The Social Action Committee then

submitted a motion to this effect which the Board of

Governors approved at its November meeting.

Since then, the Social Action Committee has been

fundraising and the sub-committee has been working

with Jewish Immigrant Aid Services (JIAS) to identify a

family in need of sponsorship. Given Canada's aim of

resettling at least 10,000 refugees under private

sponsorship by the end of February, we can probably

anticipate the arrival of Narayever's family very soon.

Since the shul announced its sponsorship, the

response f rom the community has been

overwhelmingly positive. In less than a month since

receiving Board approval, we raised more than half of

our fundraising goal. Private and family donations

have accounted for more than $15,000. In addition,

$10,000 was provided by the shul's Social Action

Committee from its Yom Kippur appeals of 2014/5 and

2015/6. The sub-committee also received a generous

anonymous matching donation of $5,000 bringing our

grant total to about $30,000 already raised. Thus, in a

little less than a month we have already raised three

quarters of our $40,000 fundraising goal! In addition

to these gifts, we have also received many offers of

warm clothing, furniture, and other in-kind gifts. Still

others have offered counseling, medical and dental

services, and expressed an interest in volunteering for

this initiative in other ways.

The campaign revealed the need for information

about a lot of things. Shul members want to know

more about the process – how will our refugee family

be selected, what are our responsibilities and how can

we best respond to their needs after they come to

Toronto? Members also raised the question about

how we might address the issue of groups such as

Druze, Kurdish, Christian and Yazidi people who seem

to have targeted even more viciously than others in

this terrible conflict. The sub-committee has prepared

a Q&A information manual to address some of these

issues and it will soon be on-line and available through

the First Narayever web page. This year's Human

Rights Shabbat featured a post-kiddush panel with

“our responsibilities to the other” as a theme. The

Social Action committee is collaborating with the Adult

Education and Communications Committees to help

provide information our congregation needs as well as

opportunities to discuss further actions we might want

to consider, including advocacy for small minority

groups whose calls for help risk being ignored.

It is a joy to see our community come together over

such an important initiative. Everyone's generosity

and enthusiasm is very heartening and deeply

appreciated. It is wonderful that the Narayever has

joined the congregation of voices in Canada

advocating for justice and safety for refugees.

This is a wonderful opportunity to thank the

committed and hard-working Social Action Committee

and its tireless refugee sub-committee chaired by

Pippa Feinstein for all their efforts. It is also important

to thank all the generous members of our shul

community who have provided an inspiring outflow of

support for this initiative. Our hearts go out to all the

displaced Syrian people, and it is beautiful to think

that, because of our collective efforts, at least one

family will be able to find safety and opportunity in our

marvelous country.

If you would like to make a financial contribution to

our initiative, you can do so by one of three ways. By

sending a cheque to the shul, please write on the

cheque or include an accompanying note saying it is

for sponsoring a Syrian Refugee Family. By donating

online via the Narayever's CanadaHelps webpage

to CanadaHelps, please ensure you choose the

office at 416.927.0546 to make a credit card donation

over the phone. Again, please make sure to specify

over the phone that the donation is intended to

support the refugee sponsorship initiative.

Yom Kippur Fund

Ten applications for funding from our Yom Kippur

initiative have come to us from organizations in Israel

as well as in Toronto. The SAC is reviewing the

applications and plans to present its recommendations

at the February meeting of the Board. This year, the

Yom Kippur appeal attracted pledges totaling about

$60,000. The amount is gratifying but undeniably

lower than in previous years. As a consequence, the

SAC and the Board may be faced with some difficult

decisions.

In addition, we have committed ongoing funding to our

long-time partner, Out of the Cold, an emergency

program that provides homeless persons with a hot

meal and a warm, safe place to sleep in churches and

other public buildings across Toronto. There are

currently 19 Out of the Cold programs operating across

the city during the winter months. The invisibility and

dehumanization of homelessness is a degrading

experience. Volunteers play a key role in reducing the

physical and emotional risk to those who lack shelter

during winter and those who are isolated and under-

housed. Aside from contributing financial support,

First Narayever congregation members are among the

friendly faces providing welcome and human contact

to people society has forgotten about. You will

recognize some of those faces in the picture.

Human Rights Shabbat

2015 marks the eighth year since the founding of

Human Rights Shabbat. As in the past, our shul

participated in this North America wide initiative to

educate Jewish communities about the intersection of

Jewish values and universal human rights. At a post-

kiddush panel (December 12), Audrey Macklin,

Professor and Chair in Human Rights Law, Faculty of

Law, University of Toronto, and Dr. Phillip Berger,

Medical Director, Inner City Health Program, St.

Michael's Hospital engaged in a discussion on Human

Rights and the refugee issue in Canada, particularly in

ADULT EDUCATION

The treatment of the Jewish community in Europe by

Christians has a long and dark history. Accountability for

the role that anti-Jewish teaching played in fostering an

environment in which the Holocaust could take place was

sought by Jewish leaders when Pope John XXIII convened

the Second Vatican Council in 1959. It took over five years

of political intrigue, media attention, lobbying and debate

before the statement was promulgated on October 28,

1965 under the name Nostra Aetate (In Our Time). This

historic document repudiated anti-semitism,

acknowledged the foundational theological contribution

made by Judaism to the Church, rejected supercessionist

teaching that the Church had replaced Israel as God's

covenant community, and affirmed that the Jewish

people are “held most dear” by God as members of a valid

and irrevocable divine covenant.

This represented a fundamental shift in the Roman

Catholic Church's attitude towards Judaism that has

provided the basis for fruitful dialogue and for pastoral

initiatives within the Church over the past fifty years. This

discussion will consider the traditional Church attitudes

towards Judaism that were rejected in Nostra Aetate, the

factors that influenced its drafting, the underlying

controversies and debates, and its significance today.

The Rev. Dr. Harold Shepherd is an ordained minister in

the Anglican Church with degrees in Biblical studies (B.A.,

M.A. and Ph.D.), law (J.D. and LL.M.), Protestant theology

(S.T.M., McGill), Roman Catholic theology (M.T.S., St.

Michael's College), and a diploma from the French Biblical

and Archeological School in Jerusalem. He is currently

enrolled in the doctoral program at Regis College in the

University of Toronto in the area of Jewish-Roman

Catholic relations after having written a Master's thesis in

this area. In addition to experience in Anglican parish

ministry, he has worked as a lawyer in private practice, the

executive director of a refugee resettlement agency, an

officer with Citizenship and Immigration Canada and with

the Canada Border Services Agency, and as an adjudicator

with the Immigration and Refugee Board's Immigration

Hopefully by now all of our members know that the

Narayever has regular Shabbat morning programs for

children: B'yachad, for children under 7 and their

parents/caregivers, and our “One-room shul-house”

for children ages 7 to 11. But did you know that we have

a youth group for teens?

The Chalutzim, as they are called, are led by their own

youth council and the ShinShinim. They are advised by

Beth Komito-Gottlieb, our Family and Youth

Engagement Coordinator. The fall was a busy time for

them as many of our teens are hired by the Narayever

to lead the children's programs at the MNjcc on the

High Holy Days. When all the chagim were over, the

Chalutzim had time to let down their hair at their

annual shabbaton with Ophir and Liad, our ShinShinim.

And, of course, many of them continue to be active as

Shabbat children's program leaders in addition to

volunteering to lend a hand whenever their shul or

community needs them.

Are you a teen in our shul? Do you know a teen who

might want to attend Chalutzim events? Email Beth at

keep you in the loop. And as always, any questions

Those who have visited Bathurst Lawn Memorial Park in

recent weeks will have noticed important improvements

to the Narayever cemetery section. Our section has

been beautifully enhanced by the erecting of a new

gateway, with newly engraved stone footings and a

refurbished sign.

This is a project that has been years in the making. Thanks

to Gary Lichtblau for his design of the project, and for his

management of the construction process. Thanks also to

our major donor, Mitchell Brown and his daughters Jackie

and Danielle, in memory of their late wife and mother

Alice Nusbaum Brown and to the others who contributed

to the project: Harry, Benjamin and Miriam Schachter;

Sheila Roth, Ava Roth and Anton Piatigorsky; Ruth

Leneman; Sharon Weintraub; Sherry and Richard Glazier;

Shalom and Keren Camenietzki.

CEMETERY

Harry Schachter, [email protected]

The new sign is a recreation of the original, weathered

sign that had marked the section for many years. It is

intended to reflect the years of history and sense of

feeling surrounding our section and thus to pay tribute to

all who are buried within it.

The last step in the project will be the planting of a new

row of trees, likely early next spring. At that point we will

schedule a dedication ceremony to mark this significant

step forward for our shul community.

On November 20 about 50 members gathered for our

semi-annual Community Shabbat Dinner. The

conversation was stimulating as old and new members

of all ages, had the opportunity to chat in an informal

setting. The food was plentiful and delicious thanks to

the magic of our caterer, Rachel Zilberg.

Special thanks to Mary Lou Smith for planning the

event and Rabbi Ed for leading the songs. If there are

members who wish to become involved in planning

these types of social events they should contact me at

[email protected] or Francine Dick at

MEMBERSHIP and SHUL COMMUNITY

David BarkinMembership [email protected]

Here are ways you can volunteer to help others in our

community:

1. COOK FOOD

When a new baby arrives, or when someone in a family

is ill, sign up to be on our cook and deliver team. [If you

have previously been on this list, please sign up again.]

2. HOST A MEAL

Sometimes, when a family is in a time of struggle, what

they need most is a warm invitation for a Shabbat meal.

Sign up to host a family in need of communal support.

3. LEAD A SHIVA MINYAN

When a family is in mourning, the shul offers support to

lead minyanim. Our roster of volunteers could use a few

please consider signing up.
