GENERAL RULES

This show will comply in every respect with the standards established by Na-tional Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC) and described in the 2017 Handbook for Flower Shows (HB) 1. This Schedule is the Law of the Show.

2. The NGC Standard System of Awarding is used in all divisions. (HB pg. 25).

Only one first place (blue), one second place (red) and one third place (yellow) may be awarded in each class/subclass. Honora-ble mention (white) may be given to other meritorious exhibits.

First place must score 90 or more, second place 85 or more, third place 80 or more and honorable mention 75 or more.

Judges’ decisions are final. Top Awards will be awarded, if merit-ed.

3. Horticulture Division is open to all gardeners.

4. Design Division is open to members of National Garden Clubs, Inc.

5. Education Division is open to NGC members and invitees.

6. Botanical Arts Division Section A. Botanical Design is open to Botanical Garden staff

Section B. Artistic Crafts is open to members of Naples Garden Club.

Section C. Photography is open to members of Naples Garden Club.

7. Emphasis is on FRESH plant material. No artificial plant material is per-mitted in any exhibit in any division. Invasive plants (see fleppc.org) are not permitted. Plants on threatened or endangered lists (see virtualherbar-ium.org/EPAC) must have been grown by the exhibitor or obtained in a legal manner. All entries must be the work of one exhibitor unless other-wise stated.

8. Naples Garden Club and Naples Botanical Garden will strive to assure the safety of all items after arrival and placement, but are not responsible for any loss or damage to exhibits. Properties should be marked with exhibi-tor’s name.

9. Dates/times for accepting and removing exhibits are stated on page 2. Exhibits may not be removed until 5 p.m. Saturday. All exhibits not re-moved at that time will be removed and disposed of by the committee. Entry cards, photographs and ribbons will be retained in the Club’s office for two weeks.

10. The Flower Show Chair and the Classification Chairs will be available dur-ing the judging for possible consultation. They, along with judges and clerks, are the only persons allowed on the floor during judging.

HORTICULTURE DIVISION RULES 1. Horticulture specimens must be fresh plant materials grown by exhibitor.2. Entries must be in their natural state, well groomed & in suitable clean con-

tainers. Treated (oiled, dressed, wired etc.) specimens are not permitted.3. All specimens must be correctly labeled with binomial name

(Genus/species) or currently trade-marked™ or registered name ® to be eligible for a Top Exhibitor Award(HB pg. 40). If the plant is a hybrid, the cultivar or variety name should beadded. Common names, in parentheses, may also be given, but are notsufficient to win a Top Exhibitor Award.

4. Entry cards are available in the Club’s office and should be completed inpencil in advance.

5. Exhibitor may submit more than one entry per class or sub-class, if eachis a different genus, species, variety, cultivar, type, form, size or color.

6. Exhibits of self-multiplying and other multiple plants are permitted.7. Invasive plants are not permitted.8. All plant material must have been in the possession of the exhibitor for the

number of days listed. (HB pg. 55) Annuals, bulbs, houseplants, perenni-als, fruits, vegetables - 90 days. Combination plantings - 6 weeks. Ar-boreals - 6 months

9. Pots may be of any size. Please preregister exceptionally large or heavyspecimens and Collections & Displays with Lindsey Clark by March 15.

10. Clear glass containers will be furnished for most cut specimens. Exhib-itors must supply clear glass container or alternative staging (e.g. ken-zans) for exceptionally large or heavy cut specimens.

11. Cut specimens should not have foliage below water line.12. Double potting is permitted as long as the inner container is not visible.13. Top dressing with coarse sand, pea gravel etc. is permitted; however, live

plant material (e.g. moss) is not permitted.14. Containers with distracting patterns, shapes or colors are discouraged15. The Classification Chair must approve all entries and has authority to

combine or subdivide sections and classes and to disqualify entries thatdo not conform to schedule requirements or are of inferior quality.

DESIGN DIVISION RULES

Only members of National Garden Clubs, Inc. may enter the Design

1. An exhibitor may enter multiple classes, but only one exhibit per class.2. Some plant material (fresh a/o dried) must be used in every exhibit.3. Designs staged in front of wooden slat walls unless otherwise stated.4. Painting, flocking, glittering or dyeing of fresh plant material is prohibited.5. Designs must be the work of one individual and that name must appear on

the entry card.6. Designer’s choice of design type unless otherwise noted in schedule.7. Designs will be judged from at least 3 feet in center-front, unless otherwise

noted in schedule.8. Artificial flowers, foliage, fruit or vegetables are not permitted, nor are man-

ufactured items simulating plant material( e.g. silk, plastic) .9. Living members of the animal kingdom and taxidermal representations are not

permitted; however, manufactured or crafted decorative items or toys that sim-ulate animals or birds are allowed.

10. Committee supplied staging may not be painted, papered or modified inany permanent way.

11. Religious symbols must be displayed in a respectful manner12. The American flag and other national flags are not permitted in any design;

nor may they be used as an underlay, background, skirting, draping, etc.13. Landscapes, scenes or anything representing an actual item of clothing,

person, animal, etc. are not acceptable in the Design Division.14. Plants on state conservation/native plant list may be used if grown by the

exhibitor or legally obtained. Invasive plants are prohibited. Accessoriesand featured objects may be used.

15. Plant materials used must be neatly and correctly identified on 3”x 5” cards (2copies). Designer’s name and class must be listed on the reverse of the cards.

16. If unable to fulfill the commitment, designer must provide a substitute.17. The Classification Chairs must approve and sign off on exhibits for con-

formance before the exhibitor leaves the exhibition space.18. Exhibitors are responsible for keeping their designs in good condition for

the duration of the show.19. Judges are requested to provide written comments on all designs.20. See Handbook pages 79-81 for further information.

EDUCATION DIVISION RULES1. Educational exhibits are open to NGC, Inc. members and invited exhibitors.2. Educational Exhibits must instruct, educate and inform the public on goals

and objectives of National Garden Club, Inc. (HB pg. 85-86)3. Exhibit should convey educational facts quickly and persuasively in an

interesting manner. Posted printed material should be large enough to beread from 3 feet.

4. Exhibits may be the work of more than one individual5. Exhibit will be staged on one half of a table 8’W x 29”H x 29”D draped

with a black cloth and must occupy a minimum of 18 square feet surfacearea, including backboard.

6. Fresh plant material is encouraged but not required. Artificial plant mate-rial may not be included in the exhibit. All plant material must be keptfresh for the duration of the Show. The committee reserves the right toremove any unsightly material.

Exhibit 2. Collier County Mosquito Control. Mosquitoes aren’t just a nui-sance; they can carry dangerous diseases. See our display for tips on pro-tecting yourself and eliminating breeding grounds.

Exhibit 3. Honey Bees and Native Florida Pollinators help maintain produc-tive, diverse plant communities and many agricultural products in our county. Learn what is needed to be a bee keeper.

Exhibit 4. Rooftop Gardens are popular worldwide and they can be a step-ping stone for Naples and SWFL to become more sustainable by reducing the carbon footprint of our residences and commercial and municipal buildings.

PHOTOGRAPHY RULES

1. Photography Section is intended to stimulate gardening interest, photo-graphic abilities and NGC objectives. All exhibits must relate to horticul-ture, gardening, design or other NGC goals, objectives or initiatives.

2. Registration with the Chair is required by March 1, 2018. Entries must bereceived by no later than March 15, 2018 to be eligible. The photographychair will accept photos and verify that all specifications have been met.

3. Exhibitors may enter only one photograph in the photography section.4. Each photograph must have a 3” x 5” index card attached to its backside

labeled with the exhibitor’s name, phone, email and class of entry, witharrows pointing to the top of the photograph.

5. Each photograph must be the work of the Naples Garden Club memberwhose name appears on the entry card.

6. No people/pets allowed in photographs.7. Exhibitors are encouraged to identify plant material preferably with cur-

rent scientific designation.8. Photographs must be 8”x10” in size and mounted on 3/16 inch foam-core

board, Orientation may be horizontal or vertical. No glass or frame per-mitted. Mounting, matting and printing may be done professionally. Thephotograph may have a matte or gloss finish.

9. Photographs will be judged by panel of three professional photographersusing the scale of points below.
