NTU has taken it upon itself to ensure that its graduates will enter the workforce with these qualities and more. Taking the lead is the Nanyang Business School which is overhauling its curriculum in stages Course content changes All BAcc and BBus students have to read two new subjects: Strategic Management and Political Economy of East Asia Contact hours for the research methods course will be increased to develop process skills used in identifying business issues, designing studies, and analysing and interpreting findings Key changes to BAcc degree Students pursuing the BAcc degree will see an increased focus on: Thinking frameworks and tools (as against rules and conventions) An understanding of the expanded role of accounting in business and society, such as the role of accounting in capital markets and in business contracts Understanding strategy, business processes and risks management Producing and evaluating information for decision-making Key changes to BBus degree A new specialisation, Information Technology, will equip students with the technical and business competencies for exploiting IT and e-commerce in the new knowledge-based economy Two specialisations will undergo substantial curriculum revisions. In Banking & Finance, there will be a shift from a focus on rules and conventions to one based on developments in financial theory and modelling. Due to the quantitative nature of leading-edge financial practice, students will have to read courses on mathematics. In Human Resource Consulting, students will be trained to take on jobs of headhunters, compensation specialists, and consultants on personnel policy, training, and change management issues. They will be certified to use key personality or psychological tools and will learn negotiation skills, consulting and change management skills, comparative employment law, industrial relations, and compensation and benefits schemes The other three specialisations will also see a shift in emphasis. Changes to Actuarial Science will tie in with the requirements of the Institute of Actuaries in UK. More conceptual and quantitative skills will be emphasised in Applied Economics. In Marketing, the focus will be on cross-cultural effects on buyer behaviour, as well as technology effects on marketing, logistics management, and promotions management For all BBus students, the number of core subjects required for each specialisation has been reduced from 10 to 7 to free up more electives for students to offer subjects in other areas. This is in line with the broadening of education and the need for multidisciplinary skills and knowledge Pedagogical changes More technology-oriented, Internet-based, CD-ROM and computer-assisted learning Greater focus on process and experiential learning (e.g. independent search and evaluation of information, more open- ended questions and case studies) Greater focus on systems thinking and learning (e.g. business simulations and games that stimulate creativity) More emphasis on oral and written communication skills Testing and evaluation changes (i.e. more emphasis on continuous learning and project work, more open-book examinations to test analytical thinking and application skills) content changes and changes in teaching and evaluation methods. The changes are already being implemented. In the review process, inputs were obtained from various sources such as the benchmarking and review of accounting and business programmes of the world’s top universities and major professional bodies, advice from renowned accounting and business professors, as well as feedback from major employers and past graduates. Commenting on the curriculum revamp, Mr Michael Lim, Executive Chairman of PriceWaterhouseCoopers Singapore, said: “NTU is moving in the right direction. The stronger focus on strategic management and IT is timely.” NTU students also welcomed the move. Alex Toh, President of the Accountancy and Business Club of NBS, welcomed the introduction of two new core subjects, Strategic Management and Political Economy of East Asia. He said: “Graduates will obtain a better understanding of the social and political environment of the countries in which their companies operate. We think that the greater weight given to project work is timely. I must say we are excited and pretty envious that this freshmen cohort will be experiencing these changes. New Deputy PresidentProf Cheong Hee Kiat, 45, Dean of the School of Civil and

Structural Engineering (CSE), assumed the post of Deputy Presidentwef 12 January 2000. He is in charge of the implementation of digitaltechnology at NTU and oversees the Centre for Continuing Education.

Describing his new role, Prof Cheong said: “My immediate taskis to look into the integration of services provided by CED, CITS andthe Library to achieve more synergistic and efficient operations andmore complementary services for our users. This will give us the right

“As for continuing education, we will work on developing andpresenting our courses in a more structured way for staff, alumni andthe public. This requires better planning and coordination; coursescan be neatly clustered by level, interest and subject matter ratherthan being conducted on an ad-hoc basis, and timed to reach outbetter to the public. In the longer term, we should partner closely withour Alumni Clubs and industry to determine training needs. In thisway, courses will stay useful and relevant. On-site learning shouldalso become commonplace.”

Garden campuses. About 50% of the MBAclasses of the Nanyang Business School(NBS) are currently being held at theCentre. Since 1 October 1999, NEC hasalso been a popular venue for executivetraining courses organised by the Centrefor Continuing Education (CCE) and manyother research centres. The MBA andexecutive training courses have receivedoverwhelming response from workingprofessionals.

“Registration for courses held at theCentre has gone up, and so hasattendance. Instructors also say that thestudents are more punctual, as they don’thave to rush all the way to Jurong and getcaught in the traffic jams,” remarked ProfNeo Boon Siong, Dean of NBS.

At the opening, Dr Cham disclosed theUniversity’s application to the Government

for a two-ha city campus which will take5,000 students when completed. It ishoped that the NEC will continue to operateeven after the new city campus opens.Until the bigger campus becomes a reality,however, NEC will continue to play animportant role in fostering closerinteractions between NTU andprofessionals working in the downtownareas. ■

First Double Masters BusinessProgramme in Asia

From this July, students on the Master of BusinessAdministration in International Business programmewill receive a double degree if they spend their secondyear at the University of St Gallen in Switzerland

TWO universities from two differentcontinents, with different culturalbackgrounds, have pooled their expertisetogether to offer a double degree – aMaster of Business Administration inInternational Business from NTU and aMaster of International Management fromthe University of St Gallen – to studentswho complete the two-year full-timeprogramme. The course is open only toNTU students doing the MBA inInternational Business.

An interdisciplinary course whichteaches the best strategies of the East and

West, the double Masters programme aimsto strengthen the future global manager’sskil ls in the areas of InternationalManagement, Management of Technologyand Capital Transfers, and InternationalBusiness Law. Thisis a part-time appointment and Prof Chen continues to serve asProfessor in the School of Civil & Structural Engineering. ■

NTU hogged the limelight at CrayQuest’99,bagging the top three of four prizes awarded.This annual competition attracted 15 entriesand NTU’s top three takings amounted to$23,000. The School of Mechanical andProduction Engineering (MPE) alone took theGrand Champion and Silver Awards, whilethe School of Applied Science (SAS) took theGold. Both MPE and SAS also secured winsin last year’s competition.

This annual event was organised by theInstitute of High Performance Computing(iHPC) and Silicon Graphics (SGI). Itencourages Singapore’s best industrial andacademic researchers to further enhancetheir research projects by exploiting highperformance computing technologies. Thisyear’s grand finale was held on 14 October1999.

Grand Champion Award ($10,000)Pulsatile Flow Study of Bi-leaflet MechanicalHeart Valve

This award was given to Assoc Prof YeoJoon Hock and his team comprising Asst ProfLim Chu-Sing and research student, Mr WangJunhong from the Cardiovascular DynamicsLaboratory. Their project is related to thedevelopment of a cardiovascular prosthesis, abi-leaflet mechanical heart valve (BMHV). Thisvalve is different as it has a novel design conceptwhich features a partially protruded ellipsoidalhinge that allows ‘positive washing’ of the bloodthat passes through it. It prevents potentialstagnation around the hinge region, whichcauses blood to clot and the valve to malfunctionas a result.

The impetus for this project came about

Clean sweep at supercomputing contestRemarkable. That’s the word to describe NTU’s super-hot performance in Singapore’spremier supercomputing contest, CrayQuest’99, where it bagged the top three offour prizes awarded

owing to the failure of a commercial BMHVin 1994 due to problems with the hingedesign. This project has given Singapore theopportunity to break into the high-tech nichecardiovascular engineering industry with astate-of-the art valve design. A US patentfor this protruded hinge was issued on 1 June1999 (US Patent No. 5,908,451).

Gold Award ($8,000)Meeting Challenges of Container PortOperations in the Next Millennium

Mr Vee Voon Yee (PhD student), Mr YeRong (MASc student), Miss Shah Sneha(Honours student) and Assoc Prof Hsu WenJing, Director of the Centre for AdvancedInformation Systems (CAIS), made up thewinning team. They developed a simulationmodel for the use of automated guided vehicles(AGVs) in a fully automated container port, atopic of significance to Singapore’s economy.

To achieve a performance highly scalableon multiprocessor computers, the team had toovercome the difficulties with the conventionalparallel simulation engines, and develop newlocality-preserving load-balancing mechanisms.They then implemented the simulation engineby using leading-edge technologies, including

THE wording on the invitation sounded serious: “Adoption of MandaiForest by the National Institute of Education (NIE)”. Many must haveread those words with some incredulity. “NIE is adopting an entireforest?” Whatever it was that was being adopted on Saturday, 13November 1999, it almost looked as if it would never happen at all.

Heavy rains that Saturday morning showed no signs of lettingup in time for the scheduled 11am launch of the National Parks-NIEcollaborative project. By some stroke of luck, however, the torrentialdownpour became a drizzle, and just before the Guest-of-Honour,Assoc Prof Koo Tsai Kee, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministryof National Development, arrived, the heavens were kind enough toturn off the tap.

During the programme, people finally got an inkling of what the

NIE adopts Mandai Forestforest “adoption” was all about. NIE, together with the help of eightschools*, will take over the maintenance of two hectares of forestalong Mandai Road, not far from the Upper Seletar Reservoir Park.It will be the duty of NIE and its partners to help restore the forestpatch – degraded over the years by an invasion of a creeper knownas Smilax – to a semblance of its former magnificence.

The project aims to use habitat restoration as a means to facilitatehands-on learning of forest ecology and biodiversity; acquaintstudents, teachers and teacher trainees with field-based learningstrategies; and enable students from different schools to collaborateon a project that is both about learning and lending a helping handtowards our natural heritage. ■

a multi-threaded programming tool developedat MIT called Cilk. Their project is believed tobe the first in the world to have demonstratedthe use of parallel computers in port operations.

Silver Award ($5,000)Computational Methods for Single and Multi-disciplinary Design Optimisation (MDO)Enterprise

The winners of this award were AssocProf Murali Damodaran and his team, DrWang Xiaojian and research student LTC LeeShiang Long from the Centre for AdvancedNumerical Engineering Simulations(CANES). Their project is concerned with theintegration of the advances made in thedevelopment of sophisticated computationalmethods for analysis of complex engineeringsystems based on more exact mathematicalmodels such as Computational FluidDynamics and Finite Element Methods,numerical optimisation methods andadvanced computer architectures fordeveloping single and multi-disciplinarydesign optimisation (MDO). MDO enablesengineers to arrive at optimal designconfigurations of complex engineeringsystems in a cost-effective manner and inshorter turn-around times. ■

“Build a satellite ground station? No problem!”The first NTU-JC Challenge has taken off, promising a soaring experience for itsyoung adventurers, who spent their year-end vacation building satellite groundstations, solving tough problems, and developing innovative satellite applications.

TRIGGERING a keen interest in science andtechnology topics that go beyond the existingschool curriculum: this is what the NTU-JCChallenge, a new annual programmeorganised by the NTU Career GuidanceCommittee, hopes to do. Difficult problemsare posed to challenge JC students to thinkout of the box, and to encourage them torelate classroom-acquired knowledge to realproblems in advanced research topics.

For the inaugural NTU-JCChallenge 2000 supported by theMinistry of Education (MOE), NTU hasinvited about 300 students from 14 juniorcolleges and Jurong Institute to solvesome tough problems related to satellitetechnology. The students have to buildtheir own weather satellite terminals attheir schools and test their proposedsolutions on these terminals, as well asdevelop novel applications and servicesrelated to satellite technology.

Starting with the basics, Mr Chua Tai Wei from theSchool of Electrical and Electronic Engineeringdemonstrates how computer software is used to tracksatellites. Students have to process image datadownloaded from weather satellites

Online lecturing made easyOnline lecturing needs no expensive and complicated set-up to work. Dr FrancisLee of the School of Applied Science did it by simply plugging into two networkswith just a laptop and video camera

ON Wednesday, 22 September 1999, DrFrancis Lee, an Associate Professor from theDivision of Computing Systems at the Schoolof Applied Science, gave his usual weeklylecture to his students at NTU. Only for thisparticular lecture, he was located in theAustralian National University in Canberra.

Using the Singapore Advanced Researchand Educational Network (SingAREN) andthe Asia Pacific Advanced Network (Apan),Dr Lee was able give his lecture using onlya laptop and a video camera. This was thefirst video-conference set up with NTU thatdid not involve the use of expensive andcomplicated systems and special facilities,

and which did not rely on SingTel’svideo-conferencing services. Theadvantage of this system is that itallows greater mobility as the usersimply needs to plug a camerainto the notebook and dial-up theNTU network from any location,whether in the US, Europe,Japan, Korea, Indonesia,Thailand, or Australia.

Dr Lee, who hopes to conductmore of such “video-lectures” inthe future, feels that there is nowno reason to cancel lecturesbecause of overseas trips, and he

encourages other lecturers to follow suit.“The use of this new technology will make

life convenient for lecturers and students, andit is free,” he said. ■

Striking out on their own was the way togo ever since research on a final-year motionpicture restoration system project took off in1996, with Prof Chong as mentor to Dilip andShowbhik. That project won them theworldwide Texas Instruments (TI) DSP BestSolution award of a whopping US$100,00that year. Aware of the potential in theiraward-winning, revolutionary software, thefour-man team decided to take thetechnopreneurial plunge in October 1999,with the launching of Nirvana Digital Pte Ltd- spun off from the Centre for SignalProcessing (CSP), where Dilip, Showbhikand Amey worked as research engineers,and SAS. At the helm as CEO is Assoc ProfChong.

ON 4 October 1999, NTU’s Centre for Signal Processing (CSP)and Singapore Technologies Electronics (ST Elect) signed an R&Dagreement for the development of a compact, fast, accurate, andaffordable fingerprint identification device. The device, based ona patent-pending technology named FingerID, is a CSP-developedomni-directional fingerprint identification technology.

“What’s revolutionary about the FingerID algorithm is that it ismulti-directional and recognises even partial fingerprints withoutcore or delta points of the fingers, or both,” said CSP programmemanager Dr Yau Wei Yun. The FingerID biometrics access controltechnology has more template sizes than what is currentlyavailable and uses only 300 – 500 bytes of memory space to storeeach print, thus ensuring accuracy and speed of identification.

Unlike other companies which port their technologies fromoptical sensors, CSP developed its technology primarily for solid-state sensors which became available about 2 years ago. FingerIDis unique as it can automatically change the sensor setting to suitdifferent skin conditions, and is able to match fingerprintsregardless of finger positioning. Moreover, its solid-state sensorcan differentiate live-and-well fingers from dead ones. Hence, thelatter will not fool the system.

ST Elect plans to integrate the new device into Securnet V3.0,which is its latest Integrated Security Management System. Both

CSP and ST Elect expect the first product prototype to be availablein nine months, while the commercialised version is expected tobe ready by the year 2001. “We are looking at exploring the useof fingerprint recognition in the areas of access control and e-commerce,” said ST Elect product development and managementdivision manager, Mr Eric Chan. “We may even see the use offingerprint recognition as an alternative to encryption for Internetpurchases.” ■

The advantages of the multi-basestation approach include overcoming theshort baseline constraint for present off-

As part of the project, fourGPS base stations will be set up,one of which is in NTU. The GPSbase stations are receivers usedto collect raw data from satellites.

This joint project is expectedto change the way measurementsare made in engineering work andlarge-scale land surveys inSingapore. The end result willplace Singapore at the forefront ofhigh precision GPS research. Positioning System (GPS) inSingapore to prototype real-timehigh precision solutions. GPS is asystem of satell ites, controlstations, and receivers that usesradio signals to transmit data totrack positions.

High precision positioning inboth the post-processed and real-time mode is now increasinglyused for many surveying andnavigation applications on land, atsea, and in the air. Such highprecision positioning techniquesare the result of progressive R&Dinnovations. According to CSE’sAssoc Prof Goh Pong Chai, theprincipal investigator of thisproject, one of the most innovative

WHILE it may be a long time yet before structures and machinescan completely mimic human beings, what is being explored nowat NTU is the Structural Health Monitoring System which usesfibre optic sensors as both sensor and carrier of information tothe central processing unit (the brain). Like nerves in the humanbody, these sensors can quickly “sense” the location and severityof faults inside structures.

The Structural Health Monitoring System works in two stages.The first stage provides a global warning system by giving theoverall health status of the structure (this is akin to checking thetemperature of someone who might appear feverish). The secondstage is the diagnosis of the problem. Specific testing is donewith quantitative values analysed so that the problem can beidentified in terms of location, severity, and size. The informationyielded provides conclusive evidence for remedial action.

Engineering designs have often mimicked nature in form andshape, just like aircraft structures, which take on the shapeof birds in flight. So too it is with smart structures, which cansense and respond to their surroundings like human beings

MEMS research takes off

Imagine microchips which can sense, think, act, andcommunicate besides performing the traditional role ofcomputation. No, such chips are not science fiction but actuallyexist today, made possible by MEMS technology. In fact, NTUis involved in precisely this ‘science reality’

MEMS (MicroElectro Mechanical Systems)is a technology in which actuators, opticaldevices, micropumps, valves and variouschemical and physical sensors can bemonolithically integrated with transistors tocreate smart, integrated microsystems.Precursors of these microsystems includeink-jet printer modules, air-bag-releasemodules for automobiles, and digital micro-mirrors for projection displays.

Intensive research and development iscurrently underway worldwide to developeven more sophisticated and advancedmicrosystems. It is foreseeable that theseintegrated microsystems will penetratemany aspects of our lives. Their impactover the next 30 years will be as profoundas that of Integrated Circuits (ICs) over thelast 30 years.

Recognising the enormous potential inMEMS, the National Science and TechnologyBoard (NSTB) of Singapore recently initiateda National Strategic Research Programmeon MEMS technology. The primary goal: to

The other approved project, PhotonicMEMS for Optical Networking, was putup by the Photonics Research Group andthe Network Technology Research Centre(NTRC). Leveraging on therecently initiated optical networkingresearch programme in NTU, together withNTRC and Telecommunication Authority ofSingapore (TAS), this project will facilitatethe development of photonic integratedcircuits and components with photonicMEMS elements for optical networking.Such technology will enable the creationof low-cost devices to allow for theintroduction of the optical fibre to the home,bringing about very high bandwidthnetwork access to the customer. ■

The first project, MEMSAIT, whichstands for MEMS for AutomaticIdentification and Tracking aims to developa high performance, small, low-cost, long-range, and low power consumption“Single-Chip” electronic tag for automaticidentification and tracking applications.This will be superior to current lowfrequency range implementations (such asthe ERP) as it is designed to operatebeyond the 30GHz range, thus exploitingthe advantages of the microwave/millimetre-wave regime. This project, whichexploits the advantages of III-V MMIC andMEMS technology, is a joint effort by theGlobal Positioning Systems Centre and the

IMAGINE meeting in a medieval monastery in the rolling hillsof Tuscany, having lectures in the stables there, and enjoyingdiscussions in the lush verdant gardens and surrounding fields.Four lucky students from the School of Mechanical andProduction Engineering (MPE) got to experience this and moreat the annual Industrial Design Education Meeting (IDEM) heldfrom 19 – 26 September 1999.

IDEM is a summer gathering which takes place each yearat a different location. The theme for this year’s workshopwas “Nature/Artificial”. Singapore’s first-ever delegation toIDEM consisted of fourth year Engineering Design studentsSee Le Lian, Muhamad Faizal bin Yusmal, VendasalamChandramohan, and Rege Abhijit Suresh, led by Asst ProfChui Yoon Ping. Joining them were participants from designprogrammes in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Holland,Belgium, Italy, Slovenia, Israel, Brazil, and Australia. Theworkshop was conducted in English.

FROM 25 - 27 November 1999, some 160English Language experts from more than12 countries gathered at NTU for a keyinternational conference on languagetesting, evaluation & assessment(Language TEA) - the first of its kind to behosted in the region.

Prof Harcharan Singh, Dean, School ofApplied Science (SAS), opened theconference, which was jointly organised bySAS and the Singapore Tertiary EnglishTeachers Society (STETS), in cooperationwith the International Association ofTeachers of English as a ForeignLanguage (IATEFL)’s Testing, Evaluationand Assessment Special Interest Group(SIG).

MORE than 250 papers from 28 countriesin Asia, Australia, Europe, and NorthAmerica, were presented at theInternational Symposium on Photonics andApplications (ISPA ’99), held on 29November – 3 December 1999, at theShangri-La Hotel. The symposium wasjointly organised by SPIE-The InternationalSociety for Optical Engineering and theSchool of Electrical and ElectronicEngineering (EEE).

The five-day programme for ISPA ’99included a workshop on optical thin-filmcoating technology and four parallelconferences on design, fabrication, andcharacterisation of photonic devices;advanced photonic sensors andapplications; photonic systems and

applications in defence and manufacturing;and photonics technology in the 21stcentury.

The four plenary speakers were DrArpad A Bergh, President, OptoelectronicsIndustry Development Association (OIDA),USA; Prof Dennis G. Deppe, University ofTexas at Austin, USA; Prof Dr Stephan WKoch, Philipps University, Marburg,Germany; and Dr A Sivathanu Pillai, ChiefController, R&D, Defence Research andDevelopment Organisation, India.

ISPA ’99 is the first internationalsymposium on photonics technology andapplications jointly organised by SPIE andNTU. Owing to its success, an MOU wassigned between the two organisations forlong-term collaboration on biennialinternational symposia on photonics andmicroelectronics technologies. The

ON 23 September 1999, Prof Haresh Shah, Obayashi Professorof Engineering from the Department of Civil Engineering, StanfordUniversity, presented the Shah Family Award/Prize for academicyear 1998-99 to Mr Luke Lim and Mr Shashidaran s/o Kaneson.The Shah Family Award/Prize, set up in 1996 through the generousdonation of Prof Shah, aims to cultivate entrepreneurship amongstudents in the School of Civil & Structural Engineering (CSE).The Award ($2,000) is for deserving final year students while thePrize ($1,500) is for deserving second and third year students.Luke has already started his own T-shirt printing company whileShashidaran intends to set up a floorball shop. From 1996 till now,there have been 6 Shah Family Award recipients and 12 ShahFamily Prize recipients. ■

IN conjunction with Techmonth ’99, the Centre for SignalProcessing (CSP) organised an Open House from 22 – 23September 1999 to showcase its R&D achievements to theindustry and public. The event highlighted the vital role that digitalsignal processing (DSP) will play in the advancement of scienceand technology. Of the 12 interesting projects displayed, threereceived special attention; their breakthrough technologies -Acoustic Noise Reduction (ANR), Speech Enhancement, andMPEG4 technologies - were featured in various major media likeFM 93.8, Radio Singapore International, TCS 5 & 8, ChannelNews Asia, The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao, and PC WorldMagazine. Assoc Prof Ser Wee, Director of CSP, notes that theseprojects have very good commercialisation prospects. CSP willcertainly strive to bring their technologies to companies who wantto market them regionally and globally. ■

NTU recently signed two Memoranda of Understanding - one ongeneral academic co-operation and the other on student exchange- with the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The signing ceremonywas held at UPM on 20 July 1999. FAISAL Karmali from the University of Waterloo, Canada, tooktop spot in the 1999 Annual IEEE Engineering in Medicine andBiology Society (EMBS) Student Design Competition. His winningwork was carried out in 1998 at the Biomedical EngineeringResearch Centre (BMERC) under the supervision of Assoc ProfS M Krishnan, Director of BMERC, while he was an exchangestudent at NTU. The award, sponsored by the Whitaker Foundationthrough the EMBS, is for outstanding undergraduate studentachievements in the field of Biomedical Engineering Design.Karmali received his prize at the 21st Annual International EMBSConference held jointly with BMES in Atlanta, USA, last October.His winning design report is titled Data Fusion and Analysis ofMultimodal Cardiovascular and Respiratory System Signals forClinical Diagnosis. ■

The Nanyang Auditorium indeedpromises to be NTU’s mini-renaissance

NTU’s latest pride and joy featuredprominently in NTU’s millenniumcelebration bash on 1 January 2000, whenit was officially opened by Deputy PrimeMinister and Minister for Defence, Dr TonyTan Keng Yam. (See also pages 8-9) ■
